I must be honest, I watched the first two episodes that aired on PBS and I’m a little disappointed. First let me say that I’m a big fan of Fr. Barron. I subscribe to his Word on Fire podcast and think he’s brilliant and entertaining. While I think this series is beautiful to see I think its pacing is slow. What Fr. Barron has to say is wonderful but there is too little engaging dialog to bridge the time.

I can understand that impression, at least with the first episode, mostly because I had such high expectations and am such a fan of Father Barron. I had previously screened the episode on the Church, which I thought was fabulous. I thought the 2nd episode, on Jesus’s teaching was slightly better than the first which I feel jumped around a little more than I would have liked. It wouldn’t surprise me if the episodes improved as the proceed, as Father Barron and they rest of the production crew become more familiar with each other and the project.

Having said that, I still think it’s great, and should be almost a required viewing for all Catholics. So rich, and points that are so often overlooked. Having heard Fr. Barron speak on evangelism and the faith many times, I was also surprised he started out SO strong, on the radicalness of Jesus, while I think it’s the most important message, I think it’s also one that can be built up to and digested better after a deeper understanding of what that means, which is his normal style.

I placed an order for the DVD set on the 16th but so far the site says that the order is “New”. They must be low on stock.
