I know so many catholic’s that don’t recognize that they are Christians. Have you ever experienced this with anyone. I remember My old hair dresser made the comment, or I grew up Catholic, but now I am a Christian.

I helped her understand where she went wrong in her sentence! 👍

It’s funny you should ask this. I just went on a tour of a pre-Revolutionary fort in Western New Hampshire. When we asked the young guide about the colonists’ religious life and preferences, she mulled over the question,

“I think they were Catholic…or where they Christians? No, the French were the Catholic ones…I’d better go ask.” She promptly asked another guide and he answered our questions. I think the distinction about Catholics and Christians being two seperate entities is more common than you think, especially among young people.

I have a hard time believing that. Maybe people who were Catholic in their youth…then fell away then joined some fundamentalist church where they were told that Catholics aren’t Christians, but I don’t think any adult Catholics would say they are not Christian!!!

My husband is a HUGE revolutionary historian. Have you ever attended the Patriots Day Celebration in Lexington … Paul Revere, etc.?

Many protestants does not label Catholics as Christians. They all think that Catholics are Mary worshippers and are out of touch with Christ’s teachings. I was there.

Christians = followers of Christ

Therefore, you need to rephrase the question… are Catholics the followers of Christ?

Hope this helps… 👍

Oooh yes, that’s what New England is all about! 👍 I’ve only seen reenactments in Lexington and Concord a few times in my life, but I hope to attend one again soon. (I’ve usually been quite busy on those weekends, but they’re quite a fun time!) My family has walked the Freedom Trail many times and I’ve even been there on a school trip. I say that we should celebrate our history in this country, especially the Revolution if we live in New England, because our area is alive with it!

By the way, the place I visited was called the Fort at Number 4 up near the Connecticut River in Charlestown.
Therefore, you need to rephrase the question… are Catholics the followers of Christ?
:amen:The answer of course, being yes!

Shamus 👍

We have visited there on a number of occassion - great place … John Stark happens to be my husband’s hero!

👍

This false distinction is a relic of the anti-Catholcisim of the founding fathers of America.

Ironically, I’ve heard that in Catholic countries, the opposite distinction occurs. Catholics are called “Christians” and Protestants are called “Protestant.”

Probably a more accurate discription.

and all my life i have never met a catholic, (that is a church going catholic) that didn’t know they were christians… now for those fallen away and indoctrinated by non-catholics, you may have a point… 👍

Indeed! Many of the Church Fathers refused to honor heretics, of whatever stripe, with the name “Christian.” the word for them meant what “Catholic” does now.

Protestants are taught that the Catholic faith is not Scriptural.

I once saw a priest try to rebut this criticism by holding up the Lectionary and reading from it. A fundamentalist sitting near me quipped “that’s not the Bible.”

I hope, I really do, that Protestants don’t worship the physical bible itself, as opposed to the Word of God. Yet I have a sinking feeling that some of them do partake of this frightening idolatry.

Please, please defend the faith, my friends. Our faith is deeply rooted in Christ.

I was in a hospital waiting room once and there was a grieving family who had a loved one undergoing emergency surgery. A pastor was being introduced to some of the family members and he said “Nice to meet you are you Christians too?” they said “Oh no, we’re Catholics.” The pastor nodded and said “Oh I see.”

Protestants are all heretics. I know The CC frowns on that sort of language in regard to our separated bretheren these days, but it is technically accurate.

I am laughing :whacky: … but this is very sad … and this is exactly why I thought I would introduce this thread to the forum. You should see me ask my CCD kids … two basic questions
  1. Are Catholics Christians?
  2. Are all Christians Catholic?
Makes for a great class and great How Wants To Be Catholic question 👍

I remember at College while attending a party, we got into a religious discussion. Somebody told me that Catholics weren’t Christians, I said “yes they are, Christianity is divided into three groups: Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant.” She would not accept my answer, it was frustrating. However I sometimes place Catholics and Orthodox Christians on the same level because they still have the sacraments and doctrines that we can agree on. I looked up the definition of Christian in the dictonary, it said that a Christian is a disciple of Christ, hence the name.

One time at Holy Thursday Mass I had brought my Baptist friend. BTW, she agrees that the Catholic church celebrates Easter the best. Well, she was sitting between me and this young girl. The young girl was on the isle (sp) side. I’m not sure how the conversation got to this but for some reason we were talking about being christian and the young girl turned and asked if we were all christians. My friend promptly said yes. You should have seen that girls face! She was so worried because she thought she had to get by all these Christians at communion. She must have been more confused when my family (minus my baptist friend) went up for communion. Talk about a kid who didn’t know.

I also found myself correcting some flight attendents when I was in Africa a few years ago. They are talking about Christians and Catholics and I had just happened to be leaving the bathroom and couldn’t get back to my seat and overheard their conversation. The plane had landed and everyone was up and collecting there stuff and I was stuck at the back of the plane. It was one of the first times I felt prompted by the Spirit. I corrected their conversation by telling them that Catholics are christians and I felt like God had made it so I couldn’t get back to my seat right away in order for that to happen.

i didn’t say they werent out there, i said i had never met a church going catholic that was not aware that they/we are christians… also those in that room may have not been in a catholic church in years either… but i will surely agree that you could probably find some…

i define **Church Going ** as the 52 sundays a year plus the 6,7,or 8 holy days of obligation (depending on where you live)…
