I have a hard time believing that. Maybe people who were Catholic in their youth…then fell away then joined some fundamentalist church where they were told that Catholics aren’t Christians, but I don’t think any adult Catholics would say they are not Christian!!!
I’m afraid it’s true. I can’t count the number of especially older Catholics who will say this. Perhaps if pressed, they might acknowledge the relation, but seldom does the conversation go that far. Maybe it’s what they were taught, but it’s wrong. I think a lot of people were raised to think Christian=Protestant; we are not Protestant; ergo, we are not Christians, we’re Catholic. Protestants, notably fundamentalists and evangelicals, have done a great job in co-opting this title.

i don’t understand the point of this poll. the catholic church was the only Christian church for a very long time. catholic simply means one or universal so the true name for the “catholic” church is the one, universal Christian church. now there can be members of the catholic church who aren’t Christian, but it is still a church for Christians.

<<<I grew up Catholic, but now I am a Christian.   >>>
**I hear this a lot, and it really irks me! I am also irked by “Christians” who believe that Catholics, by definition, are not Christians, or that only " some" Catholics MAY be Christians…You get the feeling that they feel it is their duty to"save" you from the Whore of Babylon… **

**When questioned, these people will often talk about finally having a close “relationship” with the Lord…That all the Catholic “rules” and doctrines got in the way of real faith. **

**It is a little hard to deal with this kind of thing, but I try to stay calm, and not fly off the handle. That, of course, never helps…But, it does tick me off to have people saying that Catholics are not Christians! **

Hi – look at the threads … that is exactly the point of this poll 👍

When I was small, I attended a Catholic grade school, and I never knew there were any other types of Christians than Catholics. I was once corrected by my sister where I think I was asked about Christians and Catholics and I said “No, we’re Catholic” and she said “Catholics are christians too”!

Then a couple years ago, first day of Awana for my son at a local non-denominational church the pastor was walking around meeting parents and asked a few where they attended church. I told him my parish name, indicating I was Catholic and his smile vanished and it looked like his tongue hurt. He said “oh.” and walked away.

I personally have never met a Catholic who didn’t understand that they were Christian. Unfortunately, I have met many who do not believe Catholics are Christians.

I know most do not think Catholics are not Christian, but in the last year, my children or I have been slapped in the face with this very issue. My child will ask another one to church or ccd class. The parent declines because “we are Christians”, ie. Catholics are not Christian. I have heard this so much. Sometimes the underlying hatred and misunderstanding is so great, I am left in tears for the rejection. But I remind myself that the servant is never greater than the master.

wonderful quote … I must remember that … I often feel like I have a Scarlett C    on my chest with my inlaws who are fundamentalist indepenant baptists!

Indeed, we are Christians. I was reading an article put on the CA Forums not too long ago, “Do Catholics Hear the Gospel?” by Gary Michuta. (By the way, great article, gotta read it!) Anyways, There were, I believe, four necessary topics needed to be “a Christian” and “to be saved”.
One, you need to see that you are a sinner and in need of God’s forgiveness.
Two, you need to see that only God can save you.
Three, that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for our sins.
Four, accepting Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.
(I would assume this applies to most Fundamentalist sects, and very similar to the Left Behind theology)

Using our Missal, we can meet all these four requirements. You can find these requirements met in the Penitential Rite, the Gloria, the Doxology, the Profession of Faith, the Eucharistic prayers, and right before we receive communion.

So, indeed, we are Christians, and I believe that certain Protestants need to realize that.

This false distinction is a relic of the anti-Catholcisim of the founding fathers of America.

Ironically, I’ve heard that in Catholic countries, the opposite distinction occurs. Catholics are called “Christians” and Protestants are called “Protestant.”
Depends, I hear a lot of hispanic Catholics that becasue of the protestans prolselitising they often say no I am not christian I am catholic.

👍 👍

Glad you like that article … I put it in this CA forum because I thought it was extemely powerful!

thanks 👍

Of course! A Christian is anyone who believes & follows Christ (or says they do) are.:yup:

We need to tell those that don’t think we are Christian that Catholics are the ORIGINAL, PURE Christians!

Being a christian is not a function of being catholic or non-catholic but rather on how well you follow the example of Jesus Christ. There are non-catholics who are good christians and catholics who are lousy christians.

St Francis of Asissi and Mother Theresa are sterling examples of Catholics who followed the teachings of Jesus. Pope Pius XII was a lousy example of a christian.

I’ve run across those who place Sola Fide, even OSAS, and Sola Scriptura ahead of the Trinity and the Incarnation as the foundational Christian doctrines. Of course such people deny that Catholics are Christians. And such people are legion.

If someone asks me if I am a Christian, I always answer, “Of course, I am a Catholic.”

If someone asks what religion are you, I always answer, “I am a Catholic.”

If someone asks me if I have been “saved”, I always answer, “Of course, I was saved when I was baptized into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.”

If someone asks me if I have “accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior”, I always answer, "Absolutely, I also accept him Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in my mouth and down into my tummy when I receive Holy Communion and worship him at Mass.

We are all entitled to express our opinions.

Do you think John Paul II would have behaved in the same aloof manner. Not on your life. JPII is a real Pope in every sense of the word.
JP II … is the best! 👍

I was talking to one of the mothers at my kid’s school one day, she worked for a Catholic School, and was Catholic herself. She explained to me that her parents had been Catholic, but they left the Church and became Christian. I said “Catholics are Christian”. She replied by repeating “They were Catholic, now they are Christian”.

No wonder we have this problem in the Church, even those in the Catholic schools are not immune to this ignorance.
