Well, at least from Italian bishops!

Interesting suggestion!

Non-issue for me. I don’t know how to text, don’t plan to learn.

I heard about that. I don’t text either, despite having the capabilities my phone (I think).
I can’t stand bluetoothers - really rude in public - now THERE’s something to give up !

But didn’t I also hear something about giving up the internet ?
Hey, I’m no You-Tuber or FaceBookie - but give up the net? WOW ! I’m not even doing too well at minimizing my ice cream sandwich intake! The net? Would be like living in a cloister - all I have is TV and the internet !
(Oh, wait. I got no life. It’s almost like a cloister.)
:o

Roman Catholic bishops in Italy are urging the faithful to go on a high-tech fast for Lent, switching off modern appliances from cars to iPods and abstaining from surfing the Web or text messaging until Easter.
I don’t text.

But I do listen to my iPod.

My iPod is loaded with Catholic podcasts, recitations of the rosary and the chaplet of divine mercy as well as the stations of the cross. So that’s one bit of technology I don’t want to give up for lent!

Me too. It’s great at work, where I have beaucoup free time.

(I also have the LOTR soundtracks, which I use as background music while I’m working on my novel)

Can’t get the link to work. Did they happen to say why this sacrifice in particular?

A fair few reasons, but, this was the primary, “It’s a small way to remember the importance of concrete and not virtual relationships,” the Modena diocese said in a statement. “It’s an instrument to remind us that our actions and lifestyles have consequences in distant countries.”

One of the suggestions was giving up texting on Fridays in Lent. It was stated, though, if you need these gadgets for work, this makes no sense.

I just love the swipes Yahoo makes at the Catholic Church in its articles.
And it shows the Church’s increasing focus on technology’s uses — with many of the Lenten appeals posted on various dioceses’ Web sites.

The locals are foregoing texting to emulate Thoreau:

"Nathen Cantu jotted down dozens of telephone numbers he had programmed into his cell phone but never bothered to learn.

The Mundelein High School senior then shut down the phone that for years has been a social lifeline to his friends and a reassurance to his family. He surrendered it to his teacher this week, beginning a month without a text message or single call.

Five days later, Cantu was feeling twinges of withdrawal.

“It kind of feels naked, like you don’t have something there that should be there,” Cantu said Friday."

And, yes, the city was named after the former cardinal of the Chicago archdiocese!
