"Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.”(Matthew 26:52)
And many on both sides did perish. but jesus never said that it was wrong to live and die by the sword. He only stated the well known fact that those who take up a sword risk death.

Jesus wanted at that time to give up his life for the world and his apostles, and did not want his apostle to die in his defense.

He declared that he was ready to meet his fate and wanted no one to take his burden from him.

Furthermore, Christians don’t really “*live * by the sword” anyways. We have, however, taken up the sword when necessary.

You are right. Using an ounce of simple apprehension, one would note that not everyone who has lived by the sword has died by it. If so, then who are all those guys at the local VFW?

Does this mean Our Lord was talking through his hat? Not at all when one realizes that he is speaking proverbial wisdom.

If your point is to show that members of the Catholic Church are imperfect and don’t always follow Her teachings then you did a good job. However you wanted to show the the Catholic Church is not perfect in what She teaches you failed.
The point is that the sack of Constantinople in the fourth Crusade was not justified, and I don;t see the justification for keeping this loot in Catholic Churches?

Perhaps it can be justified this way.

The ‘loot’ was take from churchs in the East, churches that were once Catholic.

When an collection of individuals decide to leave the church, do they get to keep the local artifacts. They often either keep them or destroy them. If someone leaves our parish, do they get to take part of the furnishings? It was their donations that, in part, paid for them.

So the question comes down to, is it proper to reclaim lost treasures, lost due to some people leaving the Church?

Many people want the artifacts returned to Eastern Catholic Churches. In otherwords, an internal transfer of goods from one part of the Church to another part of the Church.

If the “looting” occured in which the Church took goods from the Church, I would not use the word “looting”.

When will the Anglicans in England return our churchs
When will the Moslems in Middle East return our churchs

I don’t expect or even hope for such a day. It happened then and, so long as the artifacts are preserved for us to see, there is no real need to return them to us.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God”

Don’t let avarice be your downfall.

This is all very true. When will the Jews return the land to the Church that the Franciscans have been sittin’ on for the past 1000 years? It is rightly ours.

I’m not sure I see your point? Is it that: Anglcans and Moslems have taken Churches, so that means it is OK for Roman Catholics to loot and destroy Eastern Orthodox Churches and to keep these priceless treasures for centuries in Roman Catholic Churches?

I’m not sure how the murder and persecution of Jews during the cursades is a defensive war. And I don’t know of any catholics who even try to justify that today.

I just cannot understand why man MUST go to war when God clearly prohibits it under the New Covenant.
There is war and then there is war. Mankind has the right to restrain evil. Would God rather have us be slaughtered than resist an evil power?

As was probably mentioned several times in this thread, few Catholics say that everything that happened during the crusades was good, some of it was downright evil, but that alone does not render the crusades unjust anymore than the immoral bombing of Dresden by the Allies makes their involvement in WW2 unjust.

No one says it was

Its one thing to say the Crusades were a defensive and necessary war, but you’re strawman argument assumes that by defending the wars you’re defending the conduct of every participant. Obviously that is illogical and no one I know of has made that claim.

That isn’t even an argument.

I don’t support the firebombing of Dresden, but I thank God not only that we were in the war but we helped win it.

wow, we post the same argument citing the same bombing raid at the same time…mere coincidence. I think not!

just kidding. i’m bored

Thank God for the Crusades, if it wasn’t for them we would all be praying to Mecca right now.

It seems to me the OP was only trying to antagonize people here. He hasn’t replied in quite a while, and his argument that no wars are ever justified is just plain laughable.

I also don’t see where the Roman Catholic Church authorized or sanctioned such persecution.

That’s the bad thing about the deletion, we went over and over (and I think sucessfully debunked some of the nuttiness) practically every point that people are trying to make since this thread was “rediscovered.” I for one am willing to let someone else take a turn.

Jesus was no pacifist. Peter was to lead Jesus’ church that was why he told him to put his sword away. Read Luke 22:35-38. God even told the Jews to go to war. God was no pacifist. A Crusade is not a holy war. No human is capable of such things. It is an act of mercy and charity. That is what Pope Urban II called it. To give up one’s life and to go 2,000 miles away from home to defend one’s bretheren is surely such things as these. The Roman Catholic Church did not sanction the wrongs of the Crusades. Every war has its wrongs. Look at WW1 and WW2. They are even worse. The Moslems were being aggressive and we needed to defend ourselves. So we did. Yes, over time the true meaning of a Crusade was lost for a while. This lead to so called Crusades against non-Christians for no reason of self defence. This had become a holy war. Saint Augustine had clearly forbidden this. It is sad how the meaning was lost. King Louis IX revived the true meaning though. I can tell more about the Crusades. If you want me to tell you more then please ask me. I am tired now so that is why I am ending this post. God speed.

By that logic, you should be thanking the Jews. If we hadn’t rejected Jesus outright, Paul would not have been able to convince his followers to recruit from the Gentiles. Instead they would have followed James who advocated recruiting from within judaism only and Christainity would only be another sect of Judaism, instead of it’s own religion. 🙂

Ok. Thanks!
