A new poll by the Public Religion Research Institute claiming that Catholics support “gay marriage”. The problem is that this “poll” was funded by Arcus Foundation which is a gay advocacy group. Please see the article “Who is funding the coordinated attempt to subvert the Church’s teaching on homosexuality and marriage?” for a thorough exposé of the anti-Catholic activities of Arcus which was founded by Jon Stryker, a gay billionaire from Colorado who has promised to spend the entirety of his vast fortune on redefining marriage in the United States.

You can go to PRRI’s website and read their summary of the report. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you will see this:
“Major funding for this report comes from the Arcus Foundation, with additional support for underlying research coming from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund and the Ford Foundation.”

I think there will continue to be a problem with dissent on this issue until it is taught coherently and in a way which does not leave the Church open to accusations of bigotry!

Sure is denial in here.
Nope. Just a proper understanding of the term marriage, a proper understanding of it’s cultural and religious origins and a proper understanding of Matrimony as a Sacrament within the Catholic Church.

Protest all you like

Support it all you like

Catholic theology does not include matrimony for homosexuals. It’s not merely that it disagrees with it. The entire idea of marriage between homosexuals does not exist in the Catholic Church.

Please be careful not to “take the bait”. The point of my post was that this “poll” was funded by a group that is pro “gay marriage”. Their goal is to cause dissension in the Church.

I agree with you that there is no debate on where the Church stands on the issue of “gay marriage”. Everyone who is even nominally Catholic understands this, which is why I don’t trust a “poll” that comes to a radically different conclusion.

Polls can be manipulated to provide the results that are desired. And if they don’t, well just don’t publish it and design a new poll until you get the results you want. You can tweak a few words in the questions, or take samples from a slightly different group.

PRRI needs to be exposed. They are a totally biased group and Catholics should not allow them to create our self-image. Once again, I recommend the article by Thomas Peters (American Papist) exposing the pro “gay marriage” Arcus Foundation that funded this study.

The Catholic Church defines marriage as a covenant between a man and a woman. Therefore there is no such thing as gay marriage according to the Catholic Church. The CCC has much information about marriage under the sacraments as well as under the commandments. The purpose of marriage, again according to the CCC, is to form a lasting union between a man and a woman, so that they will love and help each other in the journey to the next life, but also to unite in that love and through this union to co-operate with God in bring new life into the world. Thus every human child is begotten of the love of spouses for each other.

Catholics who favor gay marriage don’t understand the full purpose of marriage and/or sometimes they favor a civil union in order to allow people of the same sex, living together to receive the same consideration from the government that married couples receive. I don’t in any way support gay marriage. I’m just reporting what I have heard.

TO hades with that. These days, all you have to do to ‘leave yourself open to accusations of bigotry’ is to breathe.

Teach orthodoxy, ALWAYS.

A Catholic can not be in favor of homosexual ‘marriage,’ period. Fear offending God, not the reactions of man.

This seems like willful disbelief of facts to me. Aren’t individual Catholics capable of causing their own dissension with the Catholic Church? Last time I checked it happens all the time, this wouldn’t be the first difference of opinion between leadership and lay people.

I don’t believe the poll results. You can ask questions in a way that assures the results will be what you wanted the poll to say.

No. What there is is a recognition that more than half of baptized Catholics do not practice their Catholicism, in sacramental participation, Mass attendance, and/or in fidelity to doctrine. There would never be a poll among faithfully practicing Catholics that could produce such an outcome as this story does.

Lots of people identify culturally as Catholic, but invent their own version of Catholicism which is utterly unlike what they have vowed to follow, baptismally. Their opinion has no validity when it comes to Catholic teaching, nor any influence over what the teaching will be in the near or far future.

The title of this thread is a lie! If you are homosexual, Yes you would believe it. Scripture lists is as a deadly sin, wake up to the truth before it is too late!

Peace, Carlan

Can we please not act like, regardless of whether the poll is accurate or not, a significant number of church going Catholics don’t support the idea of legalizing gay marriage? It isn’t like we should suddenly pay attention because 51% support it and there wasn’t anything to be said when the number was at 43% as said in the poll or even a much lower 30%. There really isn’t any point in pretending that a lot of Catholics, especially young ones, don’t support the legalization of homosexual marriage.

This post is truth. Thank you!

OK, well here’s a sample of how the questions in the survey were asked.

**Gay couples should be allowed to marry, form civil unions (3 part question)
  1. Gay couples should be allowed to marry
  2. Gay couples should be allowed to form civil unions, but not marry
  3. There should be no legal recognition of a gay couple’s relationship**
Seems pretty clear and simple to me. All you do is pick the one you agree with.

this is kind of an odd statement. Do any laypeople’s opinions have an validity when it comes to Catholic teaching? I mean you can’t influence it since the Roman Catholic Church has no Lay leadership at the level that it would make a difference.

Also for your info you are right, not as many Catholics who attend church every week support Gay marriage but still of those who you would consider devout 25% still favor either Gay Marriage or Gay civil unions.

Where does that statement come from? You are a Protestant , what do you know about the so called 25% ,mentioned by you, who practice the Truth being dissenters. You don’t know that!

Notes:

  1. *]Starts with a statement not a question. That seems highly irregular.
*]First 2 choices are affirming - “should”. Last statement is negative - “no”.
*]The order in which the choices are presented is suspect – implies from “best” to “worst” answer.

Also, you don’t know how this was presented. Was it on a written form? If so, what exactly did it look like. Was this survey done by telephone? If so, how exactly were the alternatives offered. Did they offer all the alternatives before accepting an answer?

There is a whole science to designing surveys in a way that does not skew the results. If one is familiar with that science, then it can easily be used in a malicious way to favor certain results. It doesn’t mean that the survey is 100% invalid, but it is suspect.

Another point. Surveys are often presented as news, but they are not really news. The purpose in presenting them as news is to shape public opinion. Some people will begin to question their own beliefs based on their perception of what others believe. It is a form of peer pressure. This is nothing less than a propaganda technique. Why else would the Arcus Foundation specifically pay to have this survey done and then widely publicize the results?

One thing seems clear. The results of this survey would never have been released if it did not meet the expectations of the Arcus Foundation which paid to have it done.

Actually Carlan, if you had taken the time to actually read the survey we are talking about you would know that’s from it.
