It was not a misunderstanding…
Its ever so easy for an Evangelical to misunderstand our teachings on purgatory ( and I recognize that purgatory is a difficult tehological topic even for those who are honestly trying to understand)… but it can also be too easy for Catholics here to just throw around short sentences loaded with concepts that they have picked up from some apologetic without doing their own homework of praying and reading Scripture.
Obviously we have some Evangelicals here who do not understand purgatory. The question is: how do we tend to the need of our brother …
The Catholic Church claims to have the fullness of truth. But the truth is nothing without love and compassion. If we are what we claim… the new Jerusalem, then we can not at the same time easily be moved to answer our brothers uncharitably even if he speaks to us with venom…

This article was “news” because although protestants in the USA frequently publicly attack Catholicism, it’s very rare in Australia where religious leaders genreally just smile at each other in public and pretend to agree with each other.
Sure his theology and history are totally “up the creek” as we Aussies say. But I actually admire him for at least having the courage of his convictions. He and his brother will avoid meeting the pope. Unlike the supposedly “Catholic” Premier Iemma of New South Wales and the “Anglican but still Catholic” Prime Minister Rudd who will no doubt smile for the electorate at photo-ops with the pope, pretending they agree with him whilst presiding over tens of thousands of abortions and in Iemma’s case authorising the creation and destruction of human embryos. And not forgetting the “Catholic” Foreign Minister Smith who is trying to make it legal for Australian “aid” money to fund and promote abortion and contraception in other countries.
Jensen also strongly makes the point that the Catholic Church has every right to expect that the government should provide support to World Youth Day. As opposed to the furious campaign against WYD and the Church which has been waged for months in the media especially the Sydney Morning Herald, by many atheists, some protestants, and even some Catholics!
