Which is why protestantism is irrational on the sola scriptura point. Its in clear contradiction to logic and fact. It astounds me as to why any protestant cant see past the fallacy and see the truthful and logical facts professed by the Catholic Church.
We can continue to post personal opinions which is quite meaningless when our goal is to search Sacred Scripture to see what God reveals to mankind. I have found that many many Catholics fear going through the Scriptures with Protestants. Remember the OP, and the Catholic Article encouraging Catholics to discuss the Scriptures with your seperated brothers. 😉 Here is part of the article written by a Catholic to Catholics…

"For non-Catholics to respect us, they have to see us criticizing ourselves and not closing ranks and pretending that we are above all the errors with which everyone else struggles. This truth is obvious, and outsiders see it already, so we have to deal with it frankly. I’m not advocating a neglect of anything else in the Catholic spiritual or liturgical life. I’m maintaining only that too many Catholics neglect or try to minimize or de-emphasize the Bible…

If a Catholic truly does know Scripture, he also needs to demonstrate that in conversation: “Walk the walk,” don’t just “talk the talk.” The more we show that Bible and Catholicism are not contradictory terms, the more we appeal to Protestants with the truth of our overall message. A Catholic who is properly prepared can easily go head-to-head with a Protestant exegete…".

NO.

Jesus is considered the superior revelation, far above any other forms of revelation One of the major flaws of the Sola Scriptura doctrine is replacing the Person of Christ with the Holy Writings. People have literally made idols out of their bibles.
We are quite like minded when you think about it. Protestants can easily miss the point that Sacred Scripture is pointing us to the person of Jesus Christ. Catholics can easily miss the point that the Catholic Church is pointing us to the person of Jesus Christ. 👍

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, -Jesus

I don’t know anything about Calvinism but from what I’ve heard so far I would agree. It is called Calvinism after a John Calvin a 16th century protestant. If it had started with Paul it would be called Paulism.

When I asked 2nd Adam about this he couldn’t answer the question with a simple yes or no. When someone dodges the simplest question, they have no credibility as someone capable of honest discourse or they have no argument.
Charles Sprugeon once said the Calvinism is a nickname for Bibilcal Christianity. Therefore, Calvinism started with God. Thje strenght of Calvinism is Sacred Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation.

This thread is not from an outsider’s view. The article exhorting Catholics to read their Bibles is from a Catholic which is posted on Catholic Forums. I’m glad you are Christian first and Catholic second. We have a different definition and understanding of the word church. I believe in the catholic church as in the remnant chosen by grace from all generations through redemptive history. Therefore, the remnant inside the Catholic Church is only part of the overall remnant in the body of Christ.
I need to correct your statment.I’m not Roman Catholic, I’m a Christian. Some on here call me a Protestant, but I do not protest against the Catholic Faith. As far as “Church” and Council of Bishops are a historical fact look it up in history, I have. I must conceed the fact and so must any Christian the Church came first than the Bible.Bishops had the Authority from the Apostles to put it together, The Bible. This is historical fact! The thread implies all Catholics don’t read the Bible. This is not true. I suggest you go to Salvation History.com. Many Catholics are well studied in Sacred Scripture, some are not, it is the ones that don’t read this is directed too.I’m sorry but 2nd Adam you have twisted the thread to be all inclusive. That is not the case.Last of all I am the outsider not the thread, because I do not belong to any single church, that is my right to choose or not which I do not care to go into. You still have dodge 1 Timothy 3:15 The Church is the Pillar and Bulward of Truth.

What good would it do before the Reformation when the masses ,the common people could not read and the Cathloic Mass has ALWAYS includrd Scriptural readings both Old and New Testaments and priest have always preached the word to the the common people throughout history. Just my opinion
Btw. Bible coast a lot of money before the printing press in 1447

Dont have a dog in this fight, but do you know it you go to a Cathloic Church ever Sunday you will have the priest preach to you all the verses of the bible, I do not think you will find that in a protestant church,I may be wrong, I was wrong in 1976,LOL

Where** do you get this teaching from?
The Bible? History? Or Men?**

Also – what is “Christian first” and “Catholic second”?**
Catholic IS Christian – not some separate sect of Protestantism or denomination instituted by men. Catholics were the very FIRST Christians.

Hi elvisman, 2nd Adam got these ideas from misreading what I posted, because I said I was an outsider looking in on the thread. He assumed I was Roman Catholic, but calling myself a Christian first. I have no affeliation with any church, which I don’t want to get into.I came here to learn,I get involved when I see one person attacking anothers belief. Many Christian Churches are exclusive( you must believe what I say), Catholic Church from what I understand on these threads is all inclusive of all Faiths, I like that, that is why I’m here and not on another site. 👍

Charles Sprugeon once said that Calvinism is just a nickname for Bibilcal Christianity. Therefore, Calvinism started with God.
So What you are saying is:

Premise 1: Charles Sprugeon is 2nd Adam’s Pope
Premise 2: Charles Spurgeon once said that Calvinism is just a nickname for Bibilcal
Christianity.
Conclusion: Therefore, Calvinism started with God.

This seems like an irrational conclusion.

Actually, the Catholic Church stands alone. All of the other Christian sects (denominations) are Protestant, in that they reject some or many of the teachings of the Catholic Church, which is the original and only Church established by Jesus.

My problem with people who say, "Christian first and Catholic second" is that it is an oxymoron of sorts. the Catholic Church IS the univeral Church of Christian believers that Jesus established. There IS no other.
All others are divorced factions from that original Church.

The Catholic Church recognizes many, if not most of these factions to be fellow Christians - although separated brethren.
Hope that helps.

Hi elvisman, I do understand this to be the Catholic Teaching, the OP how ever did not seem to understand were I was coming from. I am a seperated brother, but I don’t consider myself Protestant, because I do not protest the teachings of the Catholic Faith. I have not come to terms with the Fullness of Truth, yet, I get lump in with all other Protestants. I pray to God to show me his way does not mean I object to the Catholic Faith. I have studied hard even though I’m not as well educated as many on these threads.I do have a problem when one person attacks another Faith. I may be a Seperated brother, but I’m still a brother in Jesus Christ.👍

Bill Pick,

What’s Michael Vick got to do with the discussion?😉

Good to see you are still alive and kickin’. For what it’s worth, I thought you were right in 1976. Have a nice weekend.🙂

Peace, Graubo

Why do you keep posting this? Just read the entire link.
here, I’ll show you again.

“The wall is no longer necessary**…** For this reason Luther’s phrase: “faith alone” is true**…**” Pope Benedict XVI

see the dots? interesting…i did read the entire link. It does not say what you’re saying it says.

Why do you keep posting this? Just read the entire link.
And you’re a fraud.

Benedict XVI said that Luther was right – only if he meant faith WORKING through love as Paul mentions in Galations 5:14.
In other words – WORKS – not just an intellectual ascent to belief as many Protestants hold to. True faith is ONLY true faith if it WORKS in charity and love and one surrenders oneself totally. Simply believing is NOT faith.

You bastardize B-XVI’s comments when you abbreviate what he said because you butcher the meaning – but I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.
As an anti-Catholic, you do this to antagonize Catholics.

**THIS ****is what Benedict XVI ****ACTUALLY **said:

The wall is no longer necessary; our common identity within the diversity of cultures is Christ, and it is he who makes us just. Being just simply means being with Christ and in Christ. And this suffices. Further observances are no longer necessary. For this reason Luther’s phrase: “faith alone” is true, if it is not opposed to faith in charity, in love. Faith is looking at Christ, entrusting oneself to Christ, being united to Christ, conformed to Christ, to his life. And the form, the life of Christ, is love; hence to believe is to conform to Christ and to enter into his love. So it is that in the Letter to the Galatians in which he primarily developed his teaching on justification St Paul speaks of faith that works through love (cf. Gal 5: 14).

**Paul knows that in the twofold love of God and neighbour the whole of the Law is present and carried out. ****Thus in communion with Christ, in a faith that creates charity, the entire Law is fulfilled. We become just by entering into communion with Christ who is Love. We shall see the same thing in the Gospel next Sunday, the Solemnity of Christ the King. It is the Gospel of the judge whose sole criterion is love. What he asks is only this: Did you visit me when I was sick? When I was in prison? Did you give me food to eat when I was hungry, did you clothe me when I was naked? And thus justice is decided in charity. ****Thus, at the end of this Gospel we can almost say: love alone, charity alone. **But there is no contradiction between this Gospel and St Paul. It is the same vision, according to which communion with Christ, faith in Christ, creates charity. And charity is the fulfilment of communion with Christ. Thus, we are just by being united with him and in no other way.

Why don’t you define the church before I try to answer you.

I think your trying to convince the wrong crowd. It is a Catholic who wrote the article that Catholics need to read their Bibles. Maybe you should have a pit bull fight with that Catholic who wrote that article that Catholics need to read their Bibles. 😉 I just agree with him.

If you think that the Catholic Church gave us the New Testament, who gave us the Old Testament?
