You’re saying that southerners didn’t know what the Civil War was about? That’s sort of condescending.
There were people still fighting after the surrender at Appomattox.

News did not travel fast in the rural South back then - at all. A huge chunk of the population was also functionally illiterate (including some of my own Southern ancestors - I’ve seen their original wills, signed with an X and witnessed by the lawyer who wrote it, in the state archives). I bet there were many who weren’t quite certain of the particulars. Rural Arkansas wasn’t exactly Charleston.
What on earth are you talking about? They had to fight or die? No one knew what was happening? Sure, whatever.
Do some digging into the actual history.

You’re on a farm in the middle of nowhere in northwestern Arkansas, you’re poor, you have a couple of mules and maybe - MAYBE - one field hand, but you’re as starving as that soul is. (The presence of that one field hand is seriously debatable.) You look up and off in the distance you see seven very well dressed men on horseback - Union soldiers. (Not all of them were barbarians and not all of them were nice people, either - lots of myths about what actually went on back then, on both sides.)

Do you honestly believe you’d just sit down and not fire back if fired upon?

Wars are very tricky things. It’s not cut and dry. Each side has own their “reasons” that they proclaim. However, they’re mostly lies for the populace. War is about money and not morality.

Still isn’t now. 😏
Accurate. :raised_hands:t3::raised_hands:t3:

People weren’t dumb. They knew what was happening.
They weren’t dumb.

Ignorance isn’t dumb.

Have you actually studied what life was like in rural America in the 1860s?

Like I said, there was still fighting AFTER the surrender. Word did not travel the way it’s portrayed on television and life was not GWTW.

Don’t count on it. If tomorrow WWIII erupted, most of the global population would have very little idea about the true motivation behind the catastrophe.

People are usually uninformed and don’t want to dig for the truth.

What position? I’m just saying that wars are murky and you cannot broadly summarize them. It’s complicated!

I’m also not saying people didn’t know there was a war. They didn’t know what was going on, where troops were, where the lines were…Charleston did because it was a military town. Rural Nowheresville, AK? Totally plausible that they were clueless.

Almost all of the US was rural in 1860, even the small cities. People still knew what was happening, they most certainly were not ignorant of the war and it’s causes. The lead up to the Civil War was years in the making.

Anyway, you don’t seem to understand that I am talking about southerners being aware of the cause of the war, not troop movements.

Of course it was.

So how is it difficult for you to not see that tiny farmers in even MORE isolated areas who couldn’t read and write - and had zero access to anyone who could - might not have known about what was really going on?

It wasn’t like GWTW where a dude on horseback rode in with the latest news from Vicksburg.

As I said, it took DAYS for news of the surrender to reach the battlefield. They were still fighting AFTER Appomattox. So it’s not too much of a stretch to understand that remote locations knew even less.

They knew there was a war. They weren’t stupid. But their instant access to information…wasn’t. If you didn’t live in Atlanta or Richmond or Charleston or the like (the major cities of the time), you might not hear for days to weeks what was actually going on.

Yes. It’s far my complex than just one issue. The Northern occupation failed to bring lasting change to the situation. Sharecropping was terrible and nobody cared.

That’s funny, black people are still angry about slavery.

Slavery was wrong, Reconstruction was wrong. It was a horrible time-period.

What’s the solution? The war didn’t stop the mistreatment.
