I claim NC…and believe me, it was just as isolated in some parts as Arkansas.

Parts of VA were even more so.

People weren’t dumb. They knew what was happening.
It’s not a question of being dumb. It’s a question of not being informed of the latest news in a timely manner. Fighting continued for MONTHS after Lee’s surrender at Appamatox because the news took a long time to travel to distant states. There was no 24-hour news cycle, heck the telegraph wasn’t even in use yet.

Thanks Janet, but I wasn’t talking about the latest news from the war. I was talking about the cause of the war. Southerners knew what was happening in the country at the time regarding free states, slave states, abolitionists, elections, and what might happen next.

Some posters on here had said that southerners were just poor old country bumpkins that didn’t know nothin’ bout no slavery, theys just defendin theys land from those theivin yankees.

And they would be correct about SOME of the the people living in southern states at the time of the war. I’m not sure that all citizens on either side know ALL of the causes of the war. Slavery wasn’t the only cause you know. Especially when you consider how many of the citizenry were illiterate.

Feel free to list any issues that had nothing to do with slavery.

Sorry, i paid for that college degree, you can do the same yourself.

So, do you believe that the only reason we invaded Iraq was for those WMD’s? How about the Mexican–American War? That was a shameless land grab no different than the Russian takeover of Crimea.

What is the point of all this? Are you saying that AAs would have been better off if slavery persisted?

Of course he’s not. He’s saying that there were more causes to a war than any one single cause. The civil war for example was fought just as much over tariffs as it was slavery or states rights. There’s never one single cause that leads to a war.

This off topic, so is most everything else in this thread, but, 43 said why. He said, “He [Saddam] tried to kill my daddy [41].”

What’s your opinion on The Battle of Megiddo (15th century BC)? Should we support the Egyptians?

Please tell me you don’t actually believe that’s why we went in Iraq

No.

What I am saying is that
  1. The role of slavery in the ACW is often overstated
  2. The improvements in AA’s lives after the ACW until the mid 1960s is often also overstated.
