Some Catholics in Metro Detroit are organizing a media and Internet blitz against three local members of Congress, saying the representatives’ stand against a Democratic proposal to finance the State Children’s Health Insurance Program – known as MIChild in Michigan – is inconsistent with their vow to oppose abortion rights.

Interesting that “catholics” would describe these man as opposing “abortion rights”

Quoting Trent Wisecup, the chief of staff for one of the congressmen:
“Everyone is for health care for kids,” he said. “They cannot pay for it without a rigged tax increase that requires 22 million more Americans to become smokers.”
I am glad that at least some congressmen are being asked to re-consider their opposition of SCHIP, on the basis of being pro-life. If the only objection to the program is the issue of funding, then a congressman with pro-life values should try to find adequate funding for the program, rather than simply voting it down.

Perhaps these three congressmen have tried to find funding for the program. I do not know. But it is good that the discussion will take place.

“The important thing to communicate to them is that Catholics regard this as an issue of social justice and basic human rights – this is a life issue,” said Michael Hovey, the director of the Office for Catholic Social Teaching for the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Let’s see… equating a discretionary social spending program with an objective evil (abortion) is the Office of Social Teaching for the Archdiocese of Detroit idea of sound moral theology.
This is yet again an example of the Spirit of Vatican II.
Abortion is always evil. Social spending programs can be adjusted. These two items are not morally equivalent.

This is why many disregard Catholic Social teaching. The lack of honesty by the presenters unfortunately blackens their cause.
