I am surrounded of catholics turned to other religions… Most especially, Catholics converted to Born Again Christians… Their common reasons are:
- When they are not yet Christians, they tell bad words, do bad things and etc.
- They said that the statues of Mama Mary, Jesus and saints are a kind of idolatry.
- They are always questioning about the chastity of the priests.
- They say that we, the catholics, focus more on saints and not to God.

Maybe, they just didn’t understand these because they are not really focusing. It seems like they are blaming the Catholic religion that’s why they are not closer to God. And most especially, they did not know more on the innermost of being Catholic that’s why they get get carried away by the other religions and they cannot defend their faith… How about you? What are your thoughts about them?

I used to be Protestant, but became Catholic. I was never Fundamentalist. However I think sometimes the Church can get stuck on tradition just as much as Protestants can become exclusively scriptural. When it does, the spontaneity goes out of the church’s life and it becomes sterile.

And that, I believe, is one of the reasons some Catholics turn to Protestantism, particularly fundamentalist Protestantism. And since you live in a predominantly Catholic country, converts to Protestantism make more of an impact.

My thoughts also about them is they are confused what and where to believe.

  • When they are not yet Christians, they tell bad words, do bad things and etc.
So these ‘Born Again Christians’ do not commit error at all? Even King David, Moses and quite a few others committed error, from murder to refusing to talk to a rock, and it was these people who were also devout to God.
They said that the statues of Mama Mary, Jesus and saints are a kind of idolatry.
When God commanded Moses to cast a bronze serpent out of iron, so that whoever looks at it will live, is that also a form of idolatry? Only if one worships these statues, as if they were gods, then its idolatry.
What about the cross itself? Would that be some form of idolatry? Leading to Iconoclasm?
They are always questioning about the chastity of the priests.
Matthew 19:12 which states ‘For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.’ This does add to favour for Priesthood celibacy.
They say that we, the catholics, focus more on saints and not to God.
That depends on the person, but as much as I know on the matter, God has always came first.

As for thoughts, I think they’ve either found alot more piety in Protestantism, or have been led astray

God Bless.

Chris.

Those I have met have met who are now so-called “Bible Christians” have one thing in common: Poor or non-existent catechesis. They reject things the Catholic Church never taught, and could not therefore stay with her any more. For others, the most common thing I found was remarriage and divorce. They wanted it, and they couldn’t get it in the Church.

But even with a number of years worshipping among the Anglicans, I’ve met many more converts to the Church than those who have left.

Blessings,

Gerry

First, I want to thank you for giving me such a good answers in each statements that i always hear from the born again Christians. Actually, at the first statement:

“When they are not yet christians, they tell bad words do bad things, etc.”

Your statement is what I always say to them and they keep on telling me that Catholics are always committing so much sins than them that offended me a lot. They said they always see Catholics that after attending a mass, they are not absorbing the essence of the it rather they kept on doing bad things.

Your answer on the second statement is what they reject always. I told them that the way of idolatry in the bible is worshiping on different gods through “anitos,” “durgas,” and any other. I shared many stories to them like the story of the Immaculate Concepcion, Our lady of peace and good voyage and others yet they don’t believe me and there they always insert the fourth statement.

Another thing is praying for the dead, they always question this thing. they said: “The praying of the priest and other Catholic to the dead is useless for the dead’s fate is at God’s hand, it’s up to them if they receive Jesus, they’ll go to heaven and if not, they’ll go to hell.” How about the person who received Jesus but kept on doing bad things, are they still going to heaven? And the person who is kind and has a noble attitude but they don’t receive Jesus, will they go to hell? It bothers me a lot. I hope I can see answers to these questions.

They also question the “purgatory.” They said that purgatory is not true because it’s not written in the bible. I try to explain but i do not have enough knowledge about this. That’s all!

God Bless!

yeah you’re right. They only believe in a only bible theory by martin luther.

Sometimes they get wrapped up in the social prospects of a new church. Alot of bible- only-born-again churches are really focused on growing. When a preacher’s salary is in direct proportion to how many people he can get in the seats, they charm gets laid on really thick. Priests tend to be less “charismatic” for the most part. Also, sometimes the Catholic is divorced and not sure what their place in the Catholic Church is - or they wish to get remarried - and some other churches are willing to overlook that in order to add a new member. I feel bad for some Catholics who were just so poorly catechized that they are easily picked off by some smooth talking person who presents false facts to them. If somebody suddenly tells you that everything in the Catholic Church is evil, wrong, etc and they have some “facts” that sound legit, it can be really scary for an ill-informed person and they will get dragged in. I know a few, and they have been point blank lied to about Church history by preachers and elders in their new churches. It is sad, but those who bear false witness will be accountable to God in the end.

.
This is the number one reason. Non-existent catechesis.I am in a conversation with an ex-Catholic turned Baptist who is considering starting his own “church”. I asked him why he left the Catholic Church. First he knew nothing about her teachings. Call no man Father was his first objection. He said that when he went to communion the bread tasted like bread and the wine tasted like wine. He asked me why it didn’t it taste like flesh and blood. He had never heard of the early Church Fathers. Now this is a man that went through the RCIA program while he was a Catholic, went to bible studies and yet he does not even know the basic teachings of the Church.

After giving him Catholic answers he now is having serious doubts about the Baptist faith. He has taken my answers to his pastor. This will be a long road home. Only God’s grace will bring him back

Yeah you’re right too. There are Catholics that are not well-informed and easily picked off by other person.

For he testifieth: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech.
Heb 7:17 Douay-Rheims
Yes, and priests who are in the clerical state, discharging their office, are addressed as “Father.” After the Bull was published, he wasn’t.

  1. I think we are all responsible for our bad actions, whether we have a faith or not. And if someone truly repents great for them. I would not judge, but keep an eye out because it might just be the ferver or confusion of what is bad action. Maybe before those that converted felt using contraceptives are wrong and then after they do not feel the guilt anymore but still take the same action. Where there are those with real changes, there are many more that have a placebo effect of the new found spirituality.
  2. No comment even though I do not agree.
  3. I remember someone linking studies that show comparable number of religious leaders across all Christian groups committing adulteries with some sects commit having quite a higher percentage. I cannot cite sources right now, but if someone feels the church they are at is good because their pastor is not molesting someone. Did the pastor at their Catholic parish molested someone? If they are only willing to look what is right in front of them in one community and look, without proportionate reason, in another, then they are comparing apples to oranges after all. Maybe they have the wrong info or just using excuses borrowed by others.
  4. As for the last claim by those that converted on your list, I bet we can get tons and tons of testimonies of Catholics who refuse to convert to other faiths because of their love for God independent of other factors. Though at the same time, having saints definitely makes it easier to have role models and people to pray to on our behalf.
I would agree with you that most Catholics do not know what Catholics believe, like myself for over two decades.

Protestants have no real presence, I would even call them “protestant non-believers”, they just know better than Jesus what to think about Eucharist. They have no sacrament of reconcilliation to purify their souls. They are separated from the body of Jesus, from the vicar of Christ, outside the Church. They may have a big problem on the jugdement day.
The biggest problem about protestants is that they believe in lies that other protestants told them, and liars will not enter the kingdom of God. Maybe protestants think that telling lies is justified when they lie about the Catholic Church, and God is so happy when they do it. But it’s not like that. Lie is a lie, a sin. Lie is not only something untrue that is spread deliberately but also in a good will by people who for some reasons think they know the truth and are too lazy to check the facts.

We have to pray for their conversion and for the light of the Holy Spirit to enlighten their minds.

We didn’t have catechism when I was growing up. None of my classmates in elementary, high school and collage went to formal catechism, except those who went to catholic schools.
They are blaming the Catholic Church because that is what the fundamentalist church tell them. I know because I was one of them. I recently had contact with some of my schoolmates, and I wasn’t really surprised that some of them are now born again fundamentalists. One of them is now a pastor in Mindanao and the other a woman pastor in Manila.

I’d say two things:
1.) They weren’t well-catechized
2.) A prayer to God for their conversion. I understand people who leave the faith, having done it myself.

kristine105, how are Catholic children who attend public school catechized? Back in the 70’s and 80’s we didn’t have formal catechism.
