Denver, Colo., Feb 20, 2009 / 06:39 am (CNA).- In a startling defense of legal abortion supporter Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Catholics United has attacked Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, accusing him being more interested in trying to score political points against the governor than in crafting effective abortion policy within the reality of politics.

The salvo from Catholics United comes as advisors to President Obama have told the press that he has decided on Sebelius as his next secretary of Health and Human Services nominee.

Kathleen Sebelius, who professes to be Catholic, has a problematic record on abortion.

Although Catholics United mentions the Kansas governor’s “tireless support for children’s health care and education, and her efforts to provide public financing for adoption and pregnancy support centers,” the group fails to mention her 30 years of simultaneously advocating to keep abortion legal.

In the Spring of 2008, Archbishop Naumann met with Gov. Sebelius to ensure that she understood the gravity of her position. After meeting with her, Archbishop Naumann asked her to stop receiving Communion.

As Archbishop Naumann explained to CNA, he requested that Gov. Sebelius stop receiving Communion because of her “30-year history of advocating and acting in support of legalized abortion.”

The Thursday statement by Catholics United, which is mostly dedicated to rebuffing the president of the Catholic League, Bill Donohue, marks the first time that the organization has targeted a specific Catholic bishop by name.

“Like Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann – who often seems more interested in scoring political points against Gov. Sebelius than crafting effective abortion policy within the reality of politics – Mr. Donohue is doing a disservice to those Americans who will benefit from Gov. Sebelius’s leadership as Health and Human Services Secretary.”

Thank God that our religion has Scripture and a Pope and a Magisterium and it is not decided by majority opinion. 👍

“the reality of politics”

what about the reality of the massacre of innocent life

Since the Didachae (sp?) a Church document about 40 years after the Christ’s Passion (earlier if you count the Old Testament) the Church has consistently taught (in my opinion infallibly) that abortion is murder. When will these people get it into their head.

Life is precious and pricless and who are we to take life away. As somone once noted - the people who supported slavery were never slaves; the people who support abortion were never aborted.

I think a new Inquisition needs to be convened to look at so call Catholic groups, politicians, lobbyists, doctors, nurses, and others.

“Catholics United” is merely a CINO front group which during the election campaign worked to assure people that it was OK for Catholics to vote for pro-abortion politicians. Now they’ve shifted to trying to protect pro-abortion Catholic politicians from Catholic backlash.

The fact is that Governor Sebelius was counseled privately about her continued abortion advocacy while continuing to receive communion not only by her current bishop but by his predecessor as well. Only when she failed to respond did he make a letter public.

Bishops should consider calling these CINO groups by name, telling the world that they are rebels against the Church, and then bluntly saying that no member should present himself for Holy Communion. They proudly promote scandal.

What??!!??

The problem with pseudo-Catholics is that they not only believe they can be their own gods, but should. The serpent in the garden is not just in Genesis, but a daily event, as is the choice to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Mercy, dear Lord!

I’ve met Archbishop Naumann. He is less interested in politics than anyone I know. He has no political agenda except the protection of the Eucharist. And as I mentioned earlier, conversations with the governor had already been going on under his predecessor. He had no choice but to continue. He didn’t just wake up one day and decide to confront Gov. Sebelius. She’s been a scandal to Catholics and others for a long time.

The old Inquisition still exists. Just time to turn them loose!

Problem is, we’ve a raft of bishops scared to speak out*, and another raft full who genuinely are unwilling to speak out. Until that changes, don’t expect too much.

*There is good reason for them to be cautious; in the US it is against the law for clergy to be endorsing or excluding candidates. Excommunication could be seen as endorsing their opponents.
