Catholics, what do you do with 1 John 5? It contradicts RCC doctrine concerning the assurance of salvation. See for yourself.

This countdown reminds me of the shutdown scene in 2001: “Are you sure you want to do this Dave?” HAL

Look Dave, I can see you’re really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over.

hi real. i was rite with you till mentioned unerring catholic church. have you seen the news in the last few yrs?
Catholics believe the Church’s teachings to be infallible.
We do not believe ANY member of the church to be impeccable, not even the pope.

How’s this for a coincidence. Caza’s 999th post in CAF is also the 999th post in this thread. Hopefully this is a fitting conclusion.

1 John 5:12-18
[12] He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life.
[13] I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
[14] And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
[15] And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him.
[16] If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that.
[17] All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.
[18] We know that any one born of God does not sin, but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

A couple of points.
In verse 13 we see the word ‘believe’.
I see this as an action.
If we ‘believe’ in Jesus, that means we will DO all that he asks of us.

Have faith (Rom 3:28, John 3:16, 1 John 4:15)
forgive the sins of others (Matt 6:14-15)
care for one’s family (1 Tim 5:8)
feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned (Matt 25:31-46)
keep the Commandments (Matt 19:17 and 1 John 2:3-4)
love my brother (1 John 2:10)
deny ourselves and pick up our cross daily (Luke 9:23)
do the will of the Father (Matt 7:21)
eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man (John 6:51-58)
give a return for the talents the Master has given us (Matt 25:14-30)
be baptized (John 3:3-5, 1 Ptr 3:20-21)
confess our sins (1 John 1:9)

As others have said, belief is not merely knowledge … since Satan has this knowledge that Jesus is the son of God.
Belief is an action word.

I posted several verses to show that context is important.
To take one verse removed from the context is dangerous.
Do you read verse 18 to mean a Christian doesn’t sin?

🤷
There are other active threads with considerably more posts.
The thread closes at approx. 1000 posts. My understanding is that the admin. closes them when they see that they have exceeded 1000, but it is when they find the time to do it. They are very busy persons. 🙂
