Catholics: When did you last read the Bible?

This is to offer some statistical response to an a-C who asserts:The Poll is multiple choice and public. Please feel free to post as to your Bible reading and any other responses you might feel are relevent.

I’ll start. I own several (over 10 I’m sure) Bibles in various editions and translations. My personal reading is done mostly from either the Douay-Rheims Version or the new RSV-CE 2nd Edition but I will refer to others if I feel the need, which is rare. Only a few are non-Catholic versions because I consider them incomplete without all 73 books. For personal study, I would not use a non-Catholic Bible.

I read some of the Bible every single day, and I often look up the Mass readings before I go to Mass and (since I don’t own a Missal [yet]) print them to take with me to daily Mass when I can go. I often carry my Bible with me to Mass or Eucharistic Adoration just because…

In answer to the q. in the title: last night

I generally use the NEB: which is British, Protestant, interdenominational, & available in editions which include the other books (The REB is a revision of it). It is clear without being self-consciously modern, and is particularly helpful for making clear what the more difficult books - e.g. Job, the letters - are driving at.
I also use:

• the AV (aka the KJV);
• the RSV-CE;
• the 1985 Jewish Publication Society Tanakh (I wanted a version of the OT that had not been made by Christians of any description, for the sake of contrast with versions that had).
• the TNT (Translator’s New Testament)
• a sprinkling of others

Do you know if the NEB is a revision of the KJV? Is the NEB available in the USA?

I have a 1975 Cruden’s Compact Concordance, yet another find at the library booksale (actually run by a group called Friends of the Library- anyhow, I’ve gotten a llot of books on the cheap from their sales!). It’s mainly for the KJV, but I find it handy when I’m trying to find a verse and have trouble finding it.

I never heard of the Cruden’s Concordance**, but I have a Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance**, also mainly for the KJV, but it is cool because you can look up a word in the KJV (while you compare with another translation), and Strong’s** will give you the word and meaning from the original Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek.

I own several (more than 10) Bibles in various editions and translations. My personal reading is done mostly from either New American Bible but I will refer to others at times. All others are non-Catholic versions and Greek. I don’t have hangups about the translations that much as long as I understand the limitations of each and use my Catholic as a base - even after converting to a non-Catholic Christian group. For personal study, I prefer my Catholic Bible and prefer to follow the Greek when possible in the new testament.

I read some of the Bible every single day by means of Liturgical Prayer (the liturgy of the hours), and I often look up the Mass readings before I go to Mass. I gave all of my old Catholic literature, missals, prayer books, liturgy of the hours, etc. away to a non-Catholic minister in hopse of helping him convert other Catholics, but realized later how wrong but how good at the same time that was. I’m replenishing my Catholic books and everything else. And my family is converting to Catholicism as we speak. I often carry my Bible with me to Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, Work, etc not just because…but to study as the scriptures say, but with the understanding that the Sacred Tradition and Majesterium are the other 2/3s of the complete truth. Scripture supports Catholic doctrine.

But actually, I do not think there is too much difference between us and American English.

You might be able to obtain a copy from Amazon or post to a net Bible supplier. If you cannot get a copy, send me a private message and I will look on this side of the lake

I read during my adoration time once a week, and since I drive a truck for 7 hours a day, I listen to the Bible on CD, though I have the NAB on CD, and I wish they had the RSV -CE on CD for the old testament, because every time I get to the point where the Philistines take away the Ark of the Covenant, the Nab say’s that they got hemorrhoids, and that they made golden hemorrhoid statues when they returned the Ark back to the Isaralites.
When I listen to this, my mind wanders and wonder what a golden hemorrhoid would look like and who would have modeled for it?
( The other translations say that it was the plague that they got and it would have been ulsers)
I am sorry, I digress.
But I really enjoy being able to sit and listen to a whole book at a time to help me keep the big picture of what the author is saying, while at my adoration I can focus on just a few passages or chapters.

I read my bible everyday. I have several NAB bibles. I have one in my car and read while waiting for my kids getting out from school. I have one in my bedroom and read it before I go to bed. I have a small one that I carry when I travel. And I have Catholic Bible Study that I use for my study group.

I will check Amazon.com and other sites. I prefer British English over American English anyway. In college, I took 16-18th century British literature and 19th century British literature as electives. I had no use for the American literature courses. My term paper was on G.K. Chesterton. The language of the New English Bible would be my preference.

Last year I read the Bible all the way through, took until the middle of August. Haven’t read any other time, though, so I think that isn’t enough. At my reading speed, it’s 60 or 70 hours, (I may have read more than 15 minutes a day occasionally) from my calculations. I’ve considered trying to stay up 3 days straight and break only for food and coffee. Lots of coffee… I might be incoherent by the end, though, and won’t get enough out of it. It’s something that comes to mind from time to time.

Don’t worry about it if you cannot read it all the way through in a year. You could do a two year or even a three year plan. Or even if you just read a little bit at a time, not worrying about how far you get. It would be more beneficial to you to read a little bit but understand it, than to rush through it and not get much out of it. You could even try lectio divino, where you meditate on a short passage and let it speak to you.
