Catholics: When did you last read the Bible?

i am going to a different Cathholic church and they have CD’s instructionals on various topics such as Da Vinci Code Exposed.(2005) Have you heard of these? They are very good and are under the name Saint Joseph Communications www.lighthousecatholicmedia.com free catolog call 626 331 3549

I’m glad someone posted this question because every Catholic I’m friends with reads Scripture, if not daily, very regularly and owns at least 2 different versions. As for me I own:

NAB (bought it when I first came back to the Church, hardly touch it now)

RSV-CE, 2nd edit. (my favorite )

Douay-Rheims New Testament (have 2 of these, one small one for when I travel)

Navarre Gospel of St. Luke and Gospel of St. John

It’s funny how critical people are in accusing Catholics of not reading Scripture when our Mass is more scriptural than any Protestant service I’ve attended in my distant past.

I read the Bible every morning.I love it, its the very best book there is!!!I have six Bibles-

The Paraphased Edition
The Catholic Revised Edition
The New International Version
and 3 childrens Bibles(Im only 13)

Only the Catholic revised one contains all 73 books,so that one is definitely my favourite.I think it was silly of Prodestants to leave out the other 7, especially Tobit and Judith.

I NEVER go to bed without reading the Bible. I read the Catholic Study Bible (because that’s the one my pastor recommended for the Bible study goup he leads and I attend). During the week I prepare the scripture readings for next Sunday using Scott Hahn’s Bible Sunday Reading Reflections (available on salvationhistory.com); I also read a couple of guidebooks I have at home on the various Gospels, and I access the website of my son’s parish in Scottsdale and read the reflections posted there. I have also watched the Gospel of John and the Gospel of Matthew Bible study programs with Dr Timothy Gray on EWTN – fabulous!

The Bibles I own in hard-copy are…

1. • Revised Standard Version - 2nd Catholic Edition (preferred)
   • New American Bible (two, a large white family bible and a smaller red-cover one)
   But I also have a digital Bible-searching tool that uses:
   • RSV (non-Catholic edition)
   • NAB (not the RNAB or the ARNAB)
   • KJV (King James Version)
   • DR (Douay-Rheims)
   • LV (Latin Vulgate)
   • BNV (Biblia Nova Vulgata)
   Why should it be expected (or required) to bring a Bible to church? For your own personal prayer and meditation, feel free. If you wish to read along with the readings for that day (although we can’t do that too easily in the US because the NAB we own and the version of the NAB being read from the ambo aren’t the same), feel free. But I don’t see a need for them. We’re not doing our own thing at Mass, apart from personal prayer, we’re there for the liturgy of the Mass.

i had an interesting experience once.

To back up: I try to go to Mass daily, where, as you Catholics know, Scripture is ritualistically (there’s that “bad” word ) read, from various books in the Bible…

One day i was at home reading the Bible. I came to something i didn’t understand or readily accept (on some level). I wish i could remember what it was but it had to do with something about God allowing killing of some kind… In the OLd T. he told some nation to kill off another (??)… Anyway, that didn’t sound like the God i know and love, so i found myself struggling to hold onto my faith (a very strange thing for me…). Anyway, from that time on, i decided that i would prefer to listen to the word of God as it is READ to me @ Mass… always in the Presence of Jesus Christ…

I never have doubts about anything i hear in Scirpture when it is read in Church…

So my position is that its not that big a deal to not read the Bible every day, particularly if you hear it read to you every day at Mass…

The Joy of Finding Treasure

Jesus said to his disciples: “The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

Introductory Prayer: Lord, you have made me for yourself, and my heart is restless until I rest in you. I want to encounter you more deeply today so that you can be my treasure. Thank you for the gift of this new day. I know you love me. Help me to discover your love more deeply and give it to others.

Petition: Lord, help me to treasure the gift of your friendship.

1. A Hunt for Treasure. The restlessness in our hearts can be compared to a hunt for treasure. In different ways we all experience the desire for unconditional love, true goodness, the answer to our deepest questions. In Christ God has come to give himself to us. He is the one we truly long for; he is our greatest treasure. During this time of prayer let us deepen our awareness of the greatness of his gift of friendship, and let us strengthen this friendship by our openness to his love.

1. A Treasure Worth More Than Anything Else. In Christ we have experienced the overwhelming faithfulness of God’s love for us. In his mercy we discover that our life has infinite value in the Father’s eyes. In his teachings we discover the wisdom to build our life on solid ground. In his grace we receive the strength to grow in love and holiness. This is where we can build a true future. This is where we can live up to our calling to greatness. But we must be willing to leave aside all other concerns to really possess this treasure. We must leave aside anything that tries to give us a false sense of security outside of God. Am I making my friendship with Christ the one value that guides my heart and my decisions?

1. A Treasure That Is Free Yet Costly. Unpacking this treasure is the work of our spiritual life. We need to cooperate with Christ’s grace in order to truly possess this treasure. The cultivation of faith, hope, and charity help us discover and live this treasure more each day. Our sacrifices and renunciations done to put on the new man help us dig this treasure out of the earthy make-up of our lives. Living generous charity helps us make this treasure truly last and enrich our lives. Am I truly allowing Christ’s treasure to transform me?

Conversation with Christ: Lord, thank you for the gift of your love. You are the treasure I truly long for. Help me to enter more deeply into your heart this day by doing things your way no matter what the cost. Help me to value the gift of your friendship above everything else.

Resolution: I will make a small sacrifice of my time to do something extra for someone who needs God’s love.

Throughout the day as I’m engaged in conversations on this and other forums, I will use either Bible Gateway or the USCCB’s website for the NAB to look up passages. I’ve grown to really love the D-R and hope to own a paper copy of that version one of these days.

I own 3 NABs - The Catholic Answers Bible and 2 St Joseph’s Editions (one I got 2nd hand and it is falling apart so I bought a new one.)
We have several KJVs from our past lives as Baptists, and then a few other Bibles that have crept into the house over the years. I have a KJV-AMP-NASB-NIV parallel Bible that I loved until I realized it had 7 books missing.

I read weekly on my own and I hear Scripture through the Mass at least on Sunday.

I have 4 Bibles

1. One large family bible which we use during Advent and/or Lent
2. NAB Catholic Answer Bible - My first personal Catholic Bible. But I found all of the commentary distracting.
3. Precious Moments RSV Bible - My girls have the same one. We use them together so we are all on the same page so to speak! We use these more than the family bible now because the girls then read on their own and mark their favorite passages.
4. Igantious RSV 2nd edition - My favorite because the translation is so readable, I’m not distracted by tons of commentary.

I like the RSV “2” so much that I just bought three more through Catechetics Online (only$15.00 each!) www.catecheticsonline.com

I read the Bible “regularly” but admittedly not everyday so I selected “more than four times a week”.

I own multiple Bibles. NAB, RSV-CE, and the Navarre New Testament (also RSV-CE).
