Catholics: When did you last read the Bible?

Bible reading? Comes with the turf to me.

I have several: DRB, RSV-CE 2nd Ed, NAB, Confraternity Version, Jerusalem Bible, New English Bible, Amplified Bible, and various New Testaments and concordances etc.

Read it daily. It’s part of my life and walk with Our Lord!

My personal favorite is the RSV-CE 2nd edition. Nice!

Have all kinds of Bible versions bookmarked for forum references.
BTW, how many of you know about the indulgences that the church offers for reading the Bible?

Why would the church offer this is they didn’t want us to read it? :eek:

Oh yeah — I forgot that I also have a Spanish translation and a Confraternity Version, which I love dearly.
 
I dont necessarily grab my bible and read through it every day but I do read the daily readings on the EWTN website during morning and evening vespers. At times I also do a noon office and read some more.

I own a very old Douay Rheims
a very old Sagrada Biblia Edicion Familiar Catolica that belonged to my mother
Jerusalem Bible Scholars edition which I like because it has tons of cross-references.
Ignatius Bible
Serendipity Study Bible
La Biblia de Desudio
and about two or three paper back NIV

I was giving more thought to the Bibles I have and read.

Already mention the NAB and KJV. However, I forgot to mention the 2 chilren bibles that I have and read to my 4 year old and 5 year old daily. 🙂

So I got 4 bibles…

I also have the Ignatius Bible booklets, which have commentary from the Saints, cross references to the CCC and language studies. They’re pretty sweet.

While not asked, I also have two copies of the Catechism and one copy of the Compendium. They’re good Scripture references. 👍

Here goes
I read the Bible at least 4 times a week

I own a RSV and Navarre (for other versions I just search on net, especially when looking for NAV). And if need interlinear I just borrow my brother’s

I do not carry my Bible to Church the Parish have plenty they are more than happy to lend me I if needs be. But having said that I find no need for a Bible in Mass (excpet the one being read by the Lectors ;)).

My Grandmother boasts how the bible that sits on her coffee table is a “family bible”—so— She and my Grandfather have never read it. As a matter of fact growing up we where never allowed to touch it. The only time it was touch, was when my Grandmother dusted it. It’s the same way today in their home.

My copy of the bible is worn, tattered, I have taped the pages to the binding because I would loose them if I didn’t… it has notes in the margins and passages highlighted and underline.

My Grandmother looked at my bible sitting on the table…and asked, "Do you think it’s time for a new one??” I asked her what she meant… she said, “Well look at it, it’s a mess…”

My Non-Catholic Christian Friend has told me the same thing too… She told me that if it was her Bible, she would just “throw it away and by a new one”.

Irony is that both my friend and my Grandparents go to their respective churches weekly. However, none of them read the bible they own. My Grandparents, keep theirs on their coffee table and my friends bible sits on her bookshelf.

The bottom line is that there are Christians all over that are that way… It doesn’t matter what church they belong too. It’s sad that it’s that way. I just ask them, why don’t they read the Bible more… I don’t care who they are.

My Lutheran family members do read their Bibles. However, I have a Methodist friend who did not even own a Bible until I gave him one as a Christmas present in 2004. Since then, he has read it and attends Sunday school at his church. I have been studying the Bible at my church (Catholic) for the past 5 years at an adult Sunday school class. I also read the Bible daily on my own.

I’ve read the Bible two Sundays in a row. Last Sunday I read Esther and Wisdom, this Sunday I read Tobit and Judith. I’m probably going to read Sirach next week before I move on to 1 and 2 Maccabees then Revelation. From my senior year of High School to the present I have read the Bible on my own and I have never been discouraged from doing so from the pulpit on Sunday.
 
The Douay-Rhiems is my favorite for daily reading and because I believe it to be the most accurate.

I have a Douay-Confronternity Version I like to use when sometimes the Douay NT gets a little confusing. The Conronterniy NT is in more modern english yet still translated directly from St. Jeromes’s Latin Vulgate.

I have the St. Joseph New American Bible, which I got when I first converted because it is the version read at Mass and because I thought at the time that it was the best english translation. I still use it at times when in discussion at bible study becuase so many others are using it and it is easier if we are using a common source.

I have the Revised Standard Version but don’t use it that much. It just seems to be a fake Douay, and I have the real thing so why use it?

I also refer to my King James for the pronunciation guide it contains (the best feature of the KJV)! Also I use it sometimes when in conversation with protestants because then I am “speaking thier language”: I prefer to use my DR, but sometimes the other person gets confused so I switch to the KJV.

I also have a NIV and a Today’s English Version which I use in the same way as the KJV.

Also, since I live in New Cuba (South Florida), I also have a Bible that contains both English and Spanish side by side, which is great when speaking with the many wonderful people who love Jesus and the Scriptures but don’t speak english so well. I have had whole spiritual conversations using this bible when otherwise I and the other person would not have understoood two words of each other! It contains the Todays English on one side and Spanish on the other. If any one lives in an area where there is a dominant second language I would suggest getting a paralell bible with that particular language. You’ll have fun and make new friends!

There are a couple of others, but I never use them. The Schofield Study Bible, for instance.

I’m sure you do… I have other family members that belong to the LCMS and they do too. 😛

The point was to the one poster: It doesn’t matter if you are talking to Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists, etc, you will find some that DO NOT read the Bible.😦 However, you will also find OTHERS that DO read the bible. 😃 👍

I have several translations of the Bible. Protestant versions include the NIV (my primary source for engaging in discussions with non-Catholics), NASB, KJV, NKJV, NRSV with Apocrypha (purchased when I was a member of the Episcopal Church), NLT, Contemporary English Version and The Message (a truly horrendous paraphrase).

In addition, I own three different Catholic translations: the NAB, RSV-CE, and RSV-2ndCE. I have my eyes on a nice copy of the DRB, as well.

I read at least a small amount of scripture every day, even if it is no more than the readings from that day’s Mass. For that purpose, I use Magnificat. For personal study, my primary translation is the RSV-2ndCE, with NAB running a distant second.
 
I read a passage of Scripture (usually the Gospel reading for the day) every morning and do a personal reflection.
I have my own bible that I purchased for my ladies bible study—NAB version.
 
I get into the scriptures daily, either by bible, through the morning and evening office, to read for the Bible Timeline Course, or while looking up arguements for debates in the forums.

I answered multiple questions and when looking at the answers individually, they may seem like they conflict with each other but they really don’t.

I do “regular” bible reading a couple of times a week where I’ll read scripture – usually before and after confession and before and after Mass.

However, I reference the bible almost daily. And, I feel that I should spend more time reading scripture.
 
I read the Bible every day and study it. I use a New Jerusalem Study Bible and then study using a concordance, a dictionary of the bible and the CCC. I usually start at the CCC. Looking up scriptural references draws one into the Nexus Mysteriorum and is very valuable in helping to understand the faith (fides quae as opposed to fides qua) better!

I currently read my bible alot more than when I was a protestant. However, I should read it alot more than I am. My husband and I always intend to read it daily together but it just never seems to happen.

We own several bibles. NIV and KJV, the Jerusalem Bible and the New Jerusalem Bible, NAB and a Douay NT. And we intend to get more. 🙂
 
I attend Liturgy at least four times per week (daily if my schedule allows).

I read the Bible daily. 🙂
