I’m over 50 and have read the bible in bits for a long time.
I’ve waited over seven years for a parish bible study to come along around here, and it hasn’t happened. So, I waited much too long to just read the Bible, as Fr. Corapi says (“I don’t care how you do it, just do it.”)
In my RSV 2nd Catholic edition, the OT is 845 pages, and I just finished reading it (took about three months of casual but persistent reading). It was just that, a reading. I need to do so much more, and re-reading too.
I am just overwhelmed about how God comes across as the loving father. The merciful father. The patient father. His mercy is just dripping all over the place. It doesn’t take St. Faustina to teach me that!
At the same time, I just can’t imagine the apostacy of the Jews as depicted there in the OT. I can’t imagine what the attraction was. I can’t imagine how even the Temple was overrun with idol worship. That’s one of the big questions. Maybe it’s not important.
In Scott Hahn’s bible study course book (which I have only been browsing so far) he makes a point: You have to understand the Old Testament to understand the New Testament. Well, I’m glad to have read the OT and am plunging into the NT. I hope the understanding comes along someplace.
