i have heard many priests speak of things that are un-orthodox…

For one - It seems many have this idea that we are put on this planet to enjoy life. I left Mass once yrs ago… and passing the priest, he said, in this spacey kind of way: “Ennnjoyyyy”.

I’m thinking “Huh? enjoy what?” Needless to say, i didn’t like the sound of it… (I never like incomplete sentences much anyway…).

Then another time i heard something to the effect that we are put here to enjoy life… I wish i could remember the exact words… but that was the message…

I hear a lot of Masonic-sounding stuff also… In fact, i think what i have just mentioned is masonic…

Anyway, I don’t recall Jesus instructing us to enjoy life… I always thoght we were put here to work out our salvation with fear and trembling… stuff like that…

Comments???

If you were to look for scriptural quotes for everything priests ever said, you might as well look for scriptural quotes for everything pastors of every other denominations said.

Enjoy life isn’t something that needs to be scripturally attested to, though I’m sure there are references everywhere, but the mere fact that humans seek happiness is something that’s built into us and is more an understanding of our nature.

Some examples of people enjoying life in the Bible are when Jesus goes to wedding in can’aan, I’m pretty sure he didn’t go there to act as if it was a funeral. What kind of occassion is a wedding? You don’t even need to look for specific quotes, I think you are under the impression of wanting some kind of commandment:

“Thou shalt go out and be merry”

By looking at certain scenarios, one can deduce Jesus was happy too, and many other people in the Bible.

The only verses that came to mind was from the Old Testament:
Ecc 3:4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance.
Ecc 8:15 Therefore I commended mirth, because there was no good for a man under the sun, but to eat, and drink, and be merry, and that he should take nothing else with him of his labour in the days of his life, which God hath given him under the sun.
God Bless,
Prodigal Son1

Also from Ecclesiastes

2:24 There is nothing better for man than to eat and drink and provide himself with good things by his labors. Even this, I realized, is from the hand of God.

The NAB footnote states: Unrestrained indulgence is not advocated here, but legitimate pleasure and the cheerfulness it begets.

I’m not a scripture quoter or something but …

God created it all and said “it was good”.

'nuff said.

Any one person who is happy and enjoys life can tell you that there is also pain with happiness. We all go through cycles in our life. Sometimes it is good and we must enjoy it and thank God for it. Live your enjoyment to the fullest. Sometimes there are rough spots. We should still be thanking God. God wants us to be happy. Through some of the roughest times in my life ( and there have been plenty) I still can say that I had joyfull moments. If we are living our lives according to our faith, what more enjoyment could there be. 🙂

Where is this in the Bible, that St.Peter was in Rome, or was he ever in Rome? How can I explain a Protestant Friend ho claim that
Peter was never in Rome.

Hello Stanko.
I saw your question yesterday, I I held off in hopes that someone more knowledgeable than me would answer. Since that hasn’t happened yet, I thought I’d take a crack at this.

I think that the question posed by your friend begs the question: Why does he demand a biblical citation when there are numerous historical records of this being fact?

Does your friend dispute that George Washington was the first president because it isn’t in the Bible?

Of course not. That is because there is a tradition and historical record that it is a fact.

The same is true with Peter. There is a Tradition and a historical record that he was was martyred in Rome.

According to Wikipedia, a non-Catholic source, 80 AD Clement of Rome, in his Letter to the Corinthians (Chapter 5), speaks of Peter’s martyrdom in Rome: “Let us take the noble examples of our own generation. Through jealousy and envy the greatest and most just pillars of the Church were persecuted, and came even unto death… Peter, through unjust envy, endured not one or two but many labours, and at last, having delivered his testimony, departed unto the place of glory due to him.”

Though it is not divinely inspired, the Acts of Peter, written about 100 years after Peter’s martyrdom records the oral Tradition as to how Peter was martyred.

If your friend questions the value of Tradition, ask him why he believes in the Trinity.

It is my understanding that mainstream Protestant groups do not dispute the fact that Peter was in Rome. It is only certain anti-Catholic websites that make this claim.

I suggest you also ask your friend who suggested to him that Peter wasn’t in Rome. It will be interesting to see from where that belief (or question) came.

For more on St. Peter, I suggest that you take a look at the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Peace.

I’m not sure that any comment, other than, “that’s a bummer, man” would make any sense here.

God does want us to enjoy life. It gives me joy to be in God’s grace. When I am not in his grace I become joyless.

I am positive that Jesus truly enjoyed the friendships he had with his followers. I always picture Jesus walking down a road on beautiful sunny days with his friends. I truly believe Jesus had joy in his heart and he also wants us to have a joyful life.

God never promised us perfect lives. We all have our ups and downs and on beautiful peaceful days we should enjoy our lives.

If a Priest says to you to "enjoy…"it is because he is having a joyfull day and also wants to share it with others.

Priests work very hard for us and it is really nice to see a happy priest who is enjoying his day.

well said… and said in a non-argumentative way… hmm… you sure are an oddball… 😃

I especially like that last line… 🙂

it happens all the time… you say something on these forums and everyone jumps on all that is NOT said… & is off & running… along with the ubiquitous practice of putting words in the Poster’s mouth…

Ho hum…

this should go without saying but… i will say it anywawy because apparently, it doesn’t go without saying…’

Yes people seek happiness… yes, they are made by God to seek happiness…

and i enjoy life as much as the next person… more than most, probably… (I am a devout Catholic… need i say more?)…

i never said it was a sin to enjoy life. If that were the case, i would be on my way to Hell…

Truth be told, i probably enjoy certain things too much (food, etc…)… so maybe i am on my way to at least a long stint in Purgatory because if anything, I enjoy life TOO much…

which kind of brings me back to the original point…

DO WE NEED TO BE REMINDED OF SUCH AN OBVIOUS (pseudo) “COMMANDMENT” AS “ENJOY LIFE”??

Hi distracted…where have you been? Maybe just on different threads, huh?

Take it in the spirit in which it was given. Maybe he wanted people to enjoy the rest of their day…go smell the roses, laugh with their children, have a nice breakfast :o…whatever. Maybe he gets tired of saying…bye-bye, bye-bye, bye-bye like an airline steward. 😛

Don’t look so closely for a problem. 😉

Distracted…forgot to tell ya…YOU’RE DOING IT AGAIN! You asked in the OP Post line:** Where is it in bible or Catholic teaching. **Then when a poster answers, you act like it was totally irrelevant to the question. Some people are more literal than others. Geez, give people a teeny little break, okay?
