Catholics- Would you kill Joseph Smith?

If Joseph Smith were alive today, preaching the restored gospel, establishing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, would you kill him? Please assume that you will not be punished by the law, as those who did kill him were not punished.

I have read much on this forum, by Catholics, implying approval of the killing of Joseph Smith. For example. “he died in a gun fight” (one against 200), he was a con man, h was a polygmamist, etc.

Catholics think Joseph Smith was a fraud.

Frauds don’t deserve death.

I would take him to mass with me, just as I do all my non-Catholic friends:D .

I am a Catholic, and as such I do not believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of God or that the institution he helped found was divinely inspired or willed by God. I do recognize that many people feel close to God in their worship in Mormon temples and that the Book of Mormon, as well as their vision of Joseph Smith, inspires many men and women to lead good lives and seek to please the Lord. This is good and underscores the truth that God’s grace is boundless and is present to all those who sincerely seek to live in God’s light. As a Catholic I could never approve of or support the murder of any man or woman, no matter who they might be, without jeopardizing my own faith and falling short of God,s will for his followers. Joseph Smith may have been guilty of many things that people of his time and of this time find abhorrent and unworthy of a follower of Christ, but in the end he was unjustly murdered and it should not have happened. No, I would not have killed Joseph Smith, but I do pray for him and those who have followed his teachings.

Mormons claim JS was a martyr. A martyr is none of these things that you listed.

This does not imply that Catholics would kill him. Why would you think it does?

To mention that he died in a gunfight is not to approve of gunfighting and killing, but to take away the aura of martyrdom. He was an avowed polygamist. It’s a simple, documented fact. As to the records that indicate he was a con man, well, I have never heard of execution for con men. All it means to me is a few of the solid reasons I couldn’t follow him.
 
No he should have been locked away and forbidden contact with other so that his lies and heresy may have been contained and not spread.

first of all, there is no such thing as “the restored gospel”. the gospel was never lost. now if we were to reword this as JS establising the LDS church and preaching his own message as he did originally…then NO i would not kill him.

Well Catholics are supposed to be very tolerant and reason oriented people; I don’t think they would kill a soul.

I love Jesus and Mary as I do love Buddha and Krishna

First of all, it would be sinful to murder the man.

Second, he was obviously a charismatic character, but Brigham Young was a far better organizer and more competent disciplinarian. If Joseph Smith had survived, and Brigham Young never taken the full reins, the likelihood is that Mormonism would be less “statelike”; the attribute which, I think, people find least attractive about it.
 
If a person of any religion was to use a theological difference of opinion as justification for “killing” someone of a different thelogy, then they would merely be committing murder.

As a Catholic… I would not even consider killing another person of another faith, creed, denomination, or religion based on “beliefs”.

As far as I am aware, there weren’t any Catholics in on the real killing; why ask them if they would participate now?

The mob that murdered Joseph consisted of, mostly, Baptists, southern slavery supporters (Joseph was running for President on an abolitionist ticket), people who were afraid of the Mormons for political reasons, and just plain thugs.
