"1 February 2012
The Right Reverend Bishop Anthony of Toledo and the Midwest,
Master bless! As you may have learned, on January 20, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception. The rule is set to take effect August 1, 2012. Non-profit religious employers that do not now provide such coverage, and are not exempt under the rule’s extremely narrow definition of religious employer, will be given one year - until August 1, 2013 - to comply. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a letter which was read in every American Catholic parish last Sunday urging the faithful to contact their representatives to ask them to repeal this provision. While this law would most strongly affect institutions related to the Catholic Church, it represents an unconstitutional intrusion into religious life that could potentially affect the Orthodox Church as well. I believe that this is an issue on which we should stand with our Catholic brothers and sisters and send a clear message to the Obama administration that this legislation is not acceptable. I would humbly ask you to consider making a public statement in opposition to this law, and contacting your brother bishops and priests under your care to do the same. I am a member of [my parish], and look forward to meeting you when you are able to visit and discussing this issue with you further.
Kissing your right hand,"
