It is well known that a cat can hunt. If there are field mice about the cats will not starve.
In the Bronx? They’d better be able to fly, because their best bet is pigeons.

TNR isn’t going to work if you add food to the system to support the cats you neutered, because it works on the theory that the territory can only support so many cats. If there is enough food in your backyard to support fifteen cats, you’ll eventually get fifteen cats in your back yard.

It would have been more humane to neuter all the cats and then reduce their feed gradually, so the cats would gradually have figured out that they needed to go elsewhere. The Sisters may as well not bother trapping the cats they have, BTW, because more will wander in. They’ll be at it forever.

It is amazing that this is a Franciscan monastery. Is it possible that Mother Superior is upset at the toll these little felines are taking on the song bird population?

If not, they spend a lot of time at prayer. Their patron may get to their Mother Superior yet. (Ah, yes, that line of communication does work both ways!)

wrong, life expectancy of feral cats who are not fed by humans and protected from predators is 9 to 18 months.

the cats are doing harm, carrying disease, or being hosts for diseases spread from small animals they do hunt and kill, and vector for spread of disease.
And NOTHING smells worse than cat scat and urine. The urine can kill a lawn in short order. Spay or neuter your pets, people! And keep them up! It’s astonishing to me that I’m required by law most places to keep my dogs in my yard or on a leash, yet felines are traipsing all over the place, walking my back wall and sending my dogs into a frenzy, urinating and defecating on my lawn, etc. Keep 'em home and train them to use a litter pan.

I ought to gather up a bunch of possums and dump them in the backyard of all these whackjob cat lovers, at least they are a native species.

What Happened to the “Cat” in Catholic?

(June 7, 2005) Newly elected Pope Benedict XVI’s well-known love of stray cats apparently is not shared by the Dominican Nuns of the Corpus Christi Monastery in the Bronx, New York. The Mother Superior has ordered the removal of seven feral cats who are almost all neutered, rabies vaccinated and have lived on the monastery’s five acres for the past 8 years. In a decision backed by the Archdiocese of NY, the plan is to first try to force
the cats to leave by withholding all food and starving them. Then if they don’t go on their own, the resident Sisters will trap them and hand them over to the city. Shelter workers would be forced to euthanize the cats because they are feral and unadoptable and have nowhere else to be placed.

The Vicar of the Religious Office for the Archdiocese, Sister Helen C., stated, “my compassion does not extend to these animals” and “they will be removed eventually, one way or another.”
I’m with the Sister. Maybe she can start a ministry for hungry Dobermans.

I guess that makes me a whackjob (nice “Christian” namecalling there, by the way  ).

The possums have already beaten you to the punch, though – I have those in my yard, too. They trot right past the feral cats on the deck. They don’t bother the cats, and the cats don’t bother them. And the birds completely ignore all of them. All of these species do give the skunks a wide berth.

I wish humans could get along half as well as the animals in my yard. We could learn something from “my” four-leggers.
