Does the LDS church have any separate charitable organizations in which they would consider hiring a non-LDS to head the effort? Is there any situation where the LDS church would hire a non-LDS in a position of authority over LDS church members or funds? I think that is the point the posters were trying make and I don’t think the LDS church would ever turn over leadership of any sort of organization under their auspices to anyone who was not a member.
Proselytizing people who are in need of social services is the same as looking through obits and targeting the families who lost loved ones for proselytizing. It is not fulfilling the great commission, it is nothing more than the emotional manipulation of people as their most vulnerable.
Your post, here, is about as dismissive, disrespectful and insulting as it is possible to be, and still remain withing moderation guidelines…that is, IF it remains in moderation guidelines. (shrug)
Perhaps you should think, before you worry about whether Mormons hire non-Mormons to administer charitable organizations within the church, about the difference between the way we approach things like this. For instance, you may be right about the dearth of non-Mormon heads of charitable organizations, but not for the reason you imply; most, if not ALL, such positions are volunteer, UNPAID, callings. Not a lot of non-Mormons applying for such unpaid positions. Those positions which are full time are generally filled, also, by Mormons who have been ‘called…’ as missionaries specifically for that purpose. They pay most, if not all, their own way. Some of us save up for decades so that we can serve such missions…the way others save up for the retirement cabin in the woods.
So there is that…and then you might want to think about the implications of the sheer numbers involved here. There are a BILLION Catholics on this planet. A billion. That means that for every Mormon on earth, there are nearly 72 Catholics.
Given these facts, if I were to respond to your post in the same spirit it was made, I could point out that, after all, this group skipped over all those Catholics and hired a Mormon. I could figure that the reason this was done was because they couldn’t FIND a Catholic. If THEY could not find a Catholic to head this organization, but did find a Mormon, why in the world would a Mormon organization, knowing that the Catholics couldn’t find one of their own but DID find one of ours, go looking? I could theorize that if the right Catholic to do this could have been found, then the Catholics would have done so. Why should we reinvent the wheel…re-search the already searched? In other words, if the CAtholics couldn’t find a Catholic to head one of their charitable organizations, why should WE be forced to hire one of your rejects?
Now, I do understand quite well that it’s not that simple; this hiring choice wasn’t about “Mormon” vs. “Catholic.” It was about getting the right person, and that person just happened to be Mormon, not Catholic. I don’t for a single second think that there aren’t many Catholics who could, and would, do a marvelous job heading that organization–or volunteering for ours (in fact, many do just that.) It’s just that, evidently, none of those Catholics were in SLC, or wanted to go there and do that.
What I am saying, Z, is that when you start throwing around the bitter accusations and snide comments, you leave yourself open to responses that probably won’t make you feel better.
