I don’t see this as a question about marriage only. It’s about sin and you should’t receive while in a state of sin. Adultry will always be a sin. There are a few times when Jesus stopped with parables and was straight with people. Adultry/divorce was one of those times so there’s not much to debate about in my opinion.
The difference is that adultery (and fornication, for that matter) can be confessed. “Living in sin” makes confession and forgiveness pointless.

I am wondering. Is there any similar analogy to any other sin? If no, perhaps that is something that this committee would explore, breaking down and understanding the differences between sexual sin and other sin, and the similarities.

Yes, the Church has been given tremendous authority in this area by the Lord. The Church can not change the reality of sin, what is and what isn’t, but she does have the authority of the bind and loose.

Force of habit maybe? I think the CCC addresses some of these as mitigating circumstances?

One comment I would have on remarriage and dying in the state of sin if remarriage is the only sin. Death dissolves all marriages so that in itself will not condemn you IMO but I’m not a moral theologist.

Funny, I’ve never had a priest in confession tell me that my confession was pointless. I’ve been told several times that I have made a good confession, another older priest asked at the end if I ever felt like I was already married, I’ve had good discussions about cohabitation, and some just seem to ignore it all together. I’ve gone to the Franciscans, parish priests, and the Oblates of the Virgin Mary and never once did anyone tell me that I shouldn’t bother with confession. How is meeting Christ and admitting your sins pointless?

I never said one can’t talk to a priest. One might even get some “dispensation” if only for reasons others have cited, that you abstain from sex while you still insist on cohabitating. But otherwise…

If I asked enough priests I could find one or more that say I could receive but I choose not to, I’ll wait until I’m married before receiving again. I wasn’t saying that you should be able to receive no matter what your situation, that’s a matter of conscience in my opinion (with the Church and a confessor as a guide of course).

I just felt that your post could possibly keep someone away from confession if they feel that confession was pointless for them. I’ve often felt that myself but I usually end up going anyway. I say go to confession regardless of your sin. I’ve never felt more welcome in the Church than I do in the confessional.

Nothing wrong with that, IMO. Every Catholic needs spiritual guidance to some extent. Perhaps “living in sin” wasn’t the best phrase to use on my part.
