If it’s not enough that it’s Holy Week, this is also the week that I’m being received into the church, and my daughter baptised the day after.

Now, we had only initially planned to hold a celebration after Sunday Mass for everyone to mark the end of Lent, daughters baptism, my confirmation etc etc. But, it was brought up this morning with my priest and we were thinking of opening it on the SAturday night too.

My question is this - for those that HAVE celebrated with fellow church folks after the Saturday night Vigil, what has it consisted of before? Tea/coffee? Wine/prosecco? Cakes/nibbles?

We usually do tea+cakes on random Sundays but I thought it’d be nice to push the boat out a lil bit. Suggestions more than welcome!

The typical post-Vigil reception in my parish is a combination of cake, cookies, and fruit along with coffee, tea, and punch or lemonade. Most people seem to pop in very briefly to congratulate and welcome the newly baptized and head on home since it’s late and they’re tired.

Here as well, with adding in the gifts from the parish and group pictures.
Typically we have a couple of marriages convalidated as well. Long night.
Congratulation, by the way. God bless you.

Some parishes have these celebrations, some do not. Ours does not for the reason that it is late and people want to get home after such a long Mass, and if they bring children, they usually are cranky. However, Sunday is Easter Sunday, and most people are already celebrating the holy day with their families and may not want to attend a reception–they usually need to get home to attend to things. So it’s almost 6 of one and a half dozen of the other.

In any case, it’s probably best to limit the food to perhaps cake and coffee or cookies and coffee and punch, something light, so people don’t go to bed with a full stomach or spoil their Easter dinner.

same here

And congrats to Kirst on your upcoming Confirmation and the baptism of your daughter.

God Bless!

We give the children bubbles. They perk right up. 😃

Thanks for replying! This is what I thought too, but with baking for the Sunday service too…wasn’t sure whether to mix it up a bit?

We have a small church (3 in our cluster) so the vast majority are older folks within walking distance really!

Group pictures?! Hah, it’s past April 1st 😉 I TAKE the photos, i’m never in them lol.

Thank you so much, exciting time!

It also depends on how many are being baptized & confirmed. I’ve been to Easter Vigils were 50-60 people were being baptized & confirmed, so mass lasted until almost midnight.

If you are attending an Easter Vigil with only few people being baptized & confirmed, it’s going to be much earlier.

Our lil church hasn’t had a Vigil for a few years, and there’s been some buzz with the thought of it starting again, which is nice!
Can totally see it from both sides, which is why i’ll be letting my daughter nap mid afternoon so she’ll survive into the night and not be too tired in the morning!
Thank you so much for your suggestions!

Indeed. Every year beginning around Wednesday of Holy Week, people call the church office inquiring how many people are receiving Sacraments. The church up the road typically has 60 people. We seldom have ore than 15. We get a lot of visitors for that reason LOL

Me, myself and I at my lil church! Eek! So I don’t think it would go past the 2 hour mark. We’re kicking off at 8.30pm!

Ooooooh GREAT idea!! I’m gonna source some in town tomorrow!
You can get those long bubble wands at Wal-Mart. The kids LOVE them barbecue the bubbles are self contained. Harder to spill. I think they have them at Toys R Us too.

I’m sure I can get lil packs of them at pound / dollar stores here, i’m gonna have a look in town after Mass in the morning and see what I can find!

We’re starting ay 830 as well out at the bonfire.
Then the 7 readings and psalms, the rest of the Liturgy of the Word, homily and then as Father says “LET THE DROWNINGS BEGIN!” hahahaha
Then after Baptisms, Confirmations, then the rest of the Mass, including First Communions, all of this bi-lingually, Mass concludes, 2 convalidations int he Chapel, and then the receptions, gifts, food, and fainting from exhaustion LOL

HA fantastic!

Wow, that’s gonna be a long shift for you guys on Saturday night!

Ohhhh the large ones. I never thought of them! I’m gonna see what I can find. The services are usually busy over the weekend throughout town so i’ll see if I can find anything to help the kids tolerate it a bit longer!
