Cell Phone Emergency type Alerts at Mass

It’s an app one has to download. It doesn’t disable all phones in the church, it sends a reminder to folks they are in the vicinity of their church and to silence their cell phones.

My problem with technology that would automatically disable cell phone (if such was allowed by law) when near the church is for the times I may be in the building for other reasons than the Mass. We have a perpetual Adoration chapel within our church building. I have a scheduled hour and often use a phone app for prayers, the rosary, or even to check the time. And yes, the ringer is always off.

I work for my church, while the buildings are not attached, they are close together. I use my cell phone often at work. Having our cell phones disabled would cause disruption for many.

As I almost always attend Mass at the same time I can certainly set a reminder in various apps to silence my cell phone or, as I most often do, put it in airplane mode during Mass.

Ahhh.

At least at my parish, I almost never hear cell phones go off at Mass anymore. When I do it’s usually when something out of the ordinary happens (funeral, visiting, new baby, injury requiring crutches, major Holy Day, etc.) where people are operating outside of their routine both at Mass and outside of Mass.

I don’t know how well the app would help them.
