Cemetery Praying

The last place I saw a lot of rocks left was on Alan Freed’s tombstone. Alan Freed is the famous DJ and promoter known for inventing the term “rock n’ roll” and his tombstone is a life-sized jukebox carved in granite. People leave rocks on it and I thought it was in tribute to him inventing the word ROCK n’ roll. I did leave a rock on it for that reason. But I remember now his father was Russian Jewish. (He’s not in a Catholic cemetery and the one he is in doesn’t care if you leave rocks.)

I also visited the grave of Jim Croce the singer who converted to Judaism and is buried in a Jewish cemetery and people had left some rocks and pennies on that one too.

No, I don’t see the sense in it. I pray for their souls wherever I am. My loved ones simply are not there, only their skeletal remains.

When we go on trips, I try to pray the Eternal Rest prayer when we pass cemeteries. We don’t stop; that would take too much time, but I figure it will still help a little bit.

Just to clarify, Alan Freed popularized the term “rock and roll”, but he did not invent it.

It is a great thing to do. I wish my parents would take me to the cemetery where a few of my siblings are.

I’ve seen the custom of leaving stones at St. Andrew’s Benedictine Abbey Cemetery in Valyermo. It’s in the hot, dry high desert, and any flowers would quickly wilt and turn to dust.

I also visit our local cemeteries every few weeks and offer prayers for the deceased 👍.

I think the flat tombstones are used for ease of mowing over. Which seems not very nice.

Churches in most parts of USA are locked most of the day except Sunday.
The exceptions are usually adoration chapels or shrines that draw tourists.

The flat flush tombstones are actually required by some cemeteries in order to make mowing easier. They are also the cheapest gravestone option.
