Challenges with Marian doctrine

First of all, you are not the first or last ex-Protestant who has this problem. It may be common actually. Maybe it is because in your mind, you are afraid that you are taking away from the Lord by focusing on Mary. You have to refocus your thinking, in that Mary leads us to her son not away. She is first among saints, yes, and when we pray the Rosary we are not taking anything away from God it just pleases the Lord that we honor Mary.

Steven, If you are a golfer you are but a putt from coming home. Please come, we need all the good Baptist we can get as you bring so much love of the scripture with you. You do not have to understand everything just give the church the benefit of the doubt and accept all doctrines!

Well, I thought I needed answers, but I see I really just needed encouragement!! And @Theo2, what’s funny is that, to hear that last line in your reply…if I had heard it when I was a Protestant, it would’ve been a dog whistle. But to know that it’s the doctrine of the true Church I’m accepting and not just one of the other 30,000 denominations…
It’s very comforting, to say the least.
Thanks, y’all! Topic closed, I suppose?

I just want to mention that in the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, only two of those mysteries are about the Blessed Virgin Mary. (Assumption and Coronation in the Glorious Mysteries.) All the others are about events in the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The repetition of the Hail Mary prayer is like holding our Mother’s hand (given to us at the foot of the Cross) while meditating on the mysteries. No one knew Jesus better than Mary!

Ahhh, that’s a really good way to think of it! The cognitive dissonance is dissolving still! 😊

You’re not required to pray a rosary ever in your life.

Accept the doctrine, thats all that’s required of us.
True enough. Many are hung up on the private devotions and cannot see the forest for the trees.

Yet, and yet, as your spirituality deepens, and an understanding of contemplative prayer is gained, the Rosary calls ever stronger.

What can be displeasing to God about contemplating the life of Christ? Was this not done in heaven before it occurred here on earth?

I view the ‘Hail, Mary’ prayers as lending a cadence, giving structure, and providing background music to your contemplation. And, those words came straight from scripture. No prayer, offered in sincerity, is without eternal benefit.

Read the Gospels and focus on the relationship between Jesus and his mother.

My grandmother and before her conversion to the Catholic Church she had an issue with this until she had a special intervention from the Blessed Virgin.
In your case I would recommend that we understand this in relation that Mary is in her relation to Christ. Jesus is God then Mary is the Mother of God.

Just wanna say that @StephenBales is probably giving this more thought as a Baptist than many Catholics ever will.

You might check out the Sarum Rosary. It’s addressed to Mary but is very Christocentric and beautifully summarizes the life, work, and Passion of Christ. It’s also very late medieval English in tone and language (which I like a great deal).

The Glories of Mary is a classic and there is actually a lot of scripture in it. Saint Alphonsus really knows his Bible. I think you can find a pdf online somewhere.

I wish I could say something helpful, but all I know is my dad converted from a Baptist/ Methodist family and he said the rosary in his easy chair about every night. Never expressed a negative thought or doubt about Mary ever. He died in 1990 so I can’t ask him how he got to that point so easily. I know he did love his own mom and was a bit of a mama’s boy, her youngest baby child etc so maybe it was easy for him to relate to Jesus loving His own mom.

Good evening, Prayers for you on your journey! Please keep me in yours! The 10 commandments state to honor thy Mother, and if Jesus honored His Mother, so we too must imitate our Master and do the same. We honor Mary because God did so first, for He Who is Mighty, has done to her, Mighty Things, and all generations shall call her blessed! Mary is the ark of the new covenant, (Luke 1:43, 2 Samuel 6:9), and as special honor was given the ark of old, as God chose to dwell there in a unique way, all the more Mary, as even the blameless before God Elizabeth felt unworthy as Mary approached! Any reverence given to Mary, is to honor He Who placed her on His Davidic throne as Queen Mother and intercessor before Him of the people. God bless you!
