Change light bulbs for Lent, Catholic coalition urges

Yeah - they are actually. You honestly think that changing a light bulb is going to make you more holy and get you to heaven? :confused:

Yes are called!!. And I will spend this Lent doing my part to prevent mercury contamination in our nation’s landfills. The main thrust of my excercise in stewardship shall be avoiding CF lightbulbs in my home 👍
 
Can’t change my light bulbs for Lent because my house already has incandescent light bulbs.😃
 
As a previous poster noted, these light bulbs contain mercury!!! They cannot be thrown away in the trash, they must go to the special hazardous waste collection in your area (ours is about every 2-3 months). If you just throw them out, I’d hardly call that a good steward of our earth. They also dim with age, what starts out at the equivelent of 100 watts gradually wears down to about 35-40 watts. I like better lighting; guess we’ll be going back to oil lamps 🤷 Also, the headaches come from the rapid, not noticable flickering–they’re flourescent.

That’s a good point. Our county did not even take light bulbs as hazzardous waste until recently. Now it does, but you have to pay to drop them off. With the extra cost for the bulbs and fixtures at the time of purchase/conversion added to the time and gas to take them to recycling (over a half hour drive each way) and the fee paid to the center, it is not being good stewards of the earth or of our finances.

If I had these bulbs (which I don’t), I might consider giving them up for lent and using incandescents. I could then donate the savings to the poor. 🙂
 
I think this is one of those cases of good message, bad execution.

people are WAY too selfish now adays. I just had a conversation with a lady in my office. She’s buying and SUV this weekend. 90% of the time she’s going to be communting to work…the rest of the time it’s trip to the mall. Her kids are grown, and her husband has his own car. But she wants the bigness. Now I’m not saying that she should get one of those death-traps also known as smart cars, but I think she’s someone who’s stuck in the belief that she should have exactly what she wants at all times, no matter the cost to the environment.

When you run into the people who believe that the world is there for their sole pleasure, it’s really hard.

I read an excellent article in the Readers Digest magazine many years ago whereby a number of scientist said that the amount of energy employed and exhausted in developing material and technology for (“Green”) use creates almost as much pollution into our ecosystem as if if had not been developed originally.

Hard to believe but really give it some hard serious thought.
Who is it that is really benefiting from all this?
Multi-Billion Dollar Industry?

If you do some research you would find out that using ethanol actually uses energy. Not only is it not as effective as gas, but if you calculate the gas it costs to produce, you would be shocked. (Unless you have already researched it.)

I would love to find a “green” option that is really green, and not just feel good, let’s all hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

I am one of those suffers. On three separate occaisions I have swapped my regular bulbs for CFLs. Each time I got terrible headaches. I am now forced to stock-up on regular light bulbs because the Federal government is banning them next year.

I find it amazing that I either have to stock-up for years worth of light bulbs, or just suffer terrible headaches.

But is it right to contaminate the environment with mercury, which is contained in the alternative light bulbs. So do you commit sin and go to hell in either case, with incandescent or with flourescent type light bulbs?

And, chandelier bulbs.

PS There’s more mercury in them than a fluorescent tube bulb. I know a woman who is allergic to mercury. She’s terrified of those light bulbs, of all things. But then again, one could cost her her life.

The 10 mpg that she gets sittling in traffic…it’s disgusting. She’s using an enormous amout of fuel for no reason but that she “feels” like it. It’s a sence of entitlement. If you need an SUV to get your four kids around then GREAT! that’s using it well. To get one person who drives mostly highway to and from work…a desk job…where she’ll never use 99% of the “space” she requires is nuts.

It’s not being a good steward.

Honestly.

If you don’t like the woman is one thing (that came through in your posts).

Look at the plank in your own eye-before the splinter in hers.

She may be in Heaven before you.

Why don’t you bounce this one off your Parish Priest? Or up in Ask An Apologist?

I think you are waaaaay off track.

Let us know what you find out. When it doubt-turn to the Church for your Answer.
