Are you certain that you are not committing the Deadly sin of Envy?
Honestly.

If you don’t like the woman is one thing (that came through in your posts).

Look at the plank in your own eye-before the splinter in hers.

She may be in Heaven before you.

Why don’t you bounce this one off your Parish Priest? Or up in Ask An Apologist?

I think you are waaaaay off track.

Let us know what you find out. When it doubt-turn to the Church for your Answer.
This is how Catholicism works.

God Bless you.
+Jesus, I Trust In You!

Way off track? Hello?

I actually do like her, very much. I do not like her decision.

I’m the opposite of envious of her, I’m sorry for her. I am single and drive a sedan that has GREAT features, lots of room and handles well in all road conditions which I use it for. It is my vehicle for long trips, (and I do take my dog and stuff).

I am sorry that she thinks that becuase she walks upon the earth she’s entitled to a giant vehicle that she, admitidly, only uses for a short (less than 15mi) mostly highway work commute.

I think that people SHOULD be aware of the enviroment and be kind. I also think that very small cars like smart cars, can not only be silly, but often are hazards and deathtraps. One dosn’t have to go overboard. My own sedan is a good example. It has four doors. When my friends want to carpool or when I give rides to religious brothers, I have PLENTY of room.

I don’t need an 8 passanger SUV to do so. And I think that people should really weigh what they need and not take more than what they need.

It is up to each person to determine what they need. I have a bit more space than I need, but I also baught a used car and needed it in running condition.

Our social awareness should be in not taking MORE than we need to live comfortably. I’m not saying we should suffer or all eat algie. Far from it. Everyone should live with some degree of comfort. I’m saying that the sence of entitlement to having the biggest, the best, the whatever is wrong.

I do think it’s wrong for someone who admiditly needs a vehicle only for a short highway commute, will never travel far, will never have more than one passanger, to have a sports utility vehicle ment to carry a family or to endure rugged territory.

The Whole point though is how should light bulbs and garbage bags become a Lent issue period.

As somebody else already mentioned in this thread it is degrading.

And why would the USCCB support this Environmental Issue no matter what the liturgical season of the year is.

Since when does the environment become an important Church concern

This is secular not of having anything to do with the Church
Oh, I think that’s very far from the case. Whether or not the Giants win the Super Bowl or Notre Dame wins the NCAA Tournament, that’s secular. But caring for the environment? What happens there has a great effect on the Church, and there is a legitimate theological argument that since the Earth is God’s creation, the proper care of it needs to have a religious basis.

With friends like you she doesn’t need enemies. Based on what you have said, you don’t need a four door sedan. You are single. A two door should work for you.

Do you need plenty of room? How often do you give rides to religious brothers? It is really often enough to justify a large car for a single person? 🤷

She also has a bit more space than she needs. Maybe she was once in a car accident where her small car was totaled. Maybe the only way for her to be out on the road is in a large car/SUV?

But that is simply your opinion. That doesn’t make what she is doing wrong.🤷

I travel quite frequently, and often use the space, and even to my chigrin, for work…(which I’m undercompesnanted for but that’s a different story). This car bolied down to price…it’s 10years old and used. If I was buying new, I’d of gotten a 2 door…but it’s better to keep a well-running older car than buy a new one. The gas miliage is on par with 2-door vehicles, anyway.
How often do you give rides to religious brothers?
I never plan to, but frequently end up giving rides. They hitchike and live in my area.

Umm no. She just likes the “feel” why can’t I know my friend better than you? Why do you need to have a million justifications for why someone might act that way besides sheer selfishness. Believe me I KNOW this woman and have heard her reasons. They are selfish. Her car is a status symbol. She does because she CAN. There’s not deep psycological reason…besides the fact she thinks she should have a bigger car becuause she out-earns her husband.

She can because she has a well paying job…but again, what kind of foresight is it to buy such a guzzler? I’m not saying she needs to be driving a 40mpg vehicle…but I still can’t be convinced that it is a good idea. Sorry. Some people do have entitlement issues. It’s not my problem if you can’t see that.

I am sure some people do have entitlement issues. In fact, I see that you are not her friend, but someone that may be jealous of her and what she makes.

If she can afford the car and the gas to go into it, why does it matter to you?

I think the problem here is that I don’t buy into man made global warming. I look at history and I can see that man made global warming is a farce perpetuated by companies that make “green products.”

You seem to have switched causes here. At first you were mad that her car was creating a cost to the environment. Now, you are mad that she selfishly decided to buy a nicer car then you think she needed.

If she drives 15 miles to work every day, mostly highway driving, any cost to the environment is really negligible. That’s supposed to be the topic in this thread, isn’t it?

Where do you get the idea that you have enough information to accuse the poster of not being a true friend, but in fact envious? You have not personally met either person, but because one poster has views on an issue with which you disagree, you feel that you have the grounds to attack her on a personal level. That’s wrong.

The 10 mpg that she gets sittling in traffic…it’s disgusting. She’s using an enormous amout of fuel for no reason but that she “feels” like it. It’s a sence of entitlement. If you need an SUV to get your four kids around then GREAT! that’s using it well. To get one person who drives mostly highway to and from work…a desk job…where she’ll never use 99% of the “space” she requires is nuts.

It’s not being a good steward.
It is NOT up to you to decide. If we go there, then how many things in your own life will you open for absolute and full exploration for other people to decide if YOU are living responsibly? Are you living a perfect life?

So, what is good and enough for you MUST apply to everyone else? One size and one way fits all? Would you have that done to you by someone else?

This is the thing I cannot stand about the left:

They come-up with what they think are grand ideas, things that THEY think will improve something. Then, they do not simply suggest using products they like, they actively work to force their views down the throats of the rest of us. They have ZERO respect for personal freedom…none…nada…zip (unless of course it is THEIR freedom being theatened).

Take for example this insane CFL push. The new technology is already proved to be quite dangerous, to a point that there are formal procedures in place as to how to handle the CFL bulbs when they break because of their mercury content. They do in fact cause headaces, and they do NOT shed as pleasant a light as incandesant bulbs (granted this point is more petty). So, while the left THINKS it is helping the environment with CFLs being forced down our throats, they are actually posing health risks to people, they are damaging the environment with mercury, and they are taking a small slice of personal freedom from other people. But, in the mindsof the left all those negatives are fine because THEY feel better for pushing CFLs.

Sad really, that the political progressive green movement is now marrying with all things Catholic. Better watch out…first light bulbs for Lent, then something else to transform our attitudes away from the sacrosanct to the secular.

I had a great conversation with some awesome hard core Catholics this weekend about this discussion. The response from one of the people there was so awesome I have to share it.

So - for Lent we sacrifice something we enjoy to help us grow in holiness, to deprive us of earthly things, to understand what it means to do without. Then on Easter we celebrate the risen Lord by partaking in that which we abstained from (within reason of course), and to celebrate ourselves as changed and more holy souls.

What do people who give up light bulbs do on Easter? Turn on every light in the house? Buy every incandescent light bulb they can find and have them triple bagged in plastic grocery bags?

It’s silly, it makes no sense. It totally looses the meaning of the intent of sacrifice. If you give up using incandescent lights, the intent is that you will do that forever. So then it’s no longer a sacrifice, it is a purchase decision.

Get holy or die trying. Planting a garden is not going to do that for you. Instead, why no use that time to sit before the Blessed Sacrament and pray for holiness.

I must say I was surprised by this. I didn’t know that having Incandescent Might be Considered Sinful or that Environmental Concerns were a Big Issue this Lent

The Catholic Coalition for Climate Change was mentioned in a documentary on Real Catholic TV. According to the documentary, the CCCC has what some people would call questionable political connections for a Catholic organization. The current Lenten suggestions were also mentioned in the documentary.

But what about those that give up cigarettes? 🤷 Are they supposed to start smoking again on Easter?

Sometimes I give up something that isn’t good for me. Years ago, I gave up biting my nails. I used to bite down so far that I would end up with bleeding fingers. 😊 On Easter, rather the Monday after, I treated myself to lovely manicure, I didn’t start biting again. So sometimes, we give up something that we hope to give up forever. It is a sacrifice and difficult to do, but we don’t want to go back to it.

Now, I think that giving up light bulbs for Lent is silly. And like you consider it a purchase decision, same with using paper vs. plastic. But just because someone wants to change a bad habit like nail biting, smoking or watching too much TV, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a sacrifice. Or that we have to partake of it on Easter.

You are completely missing my point and trying to twist this into some semantic debate which it is not. The point is…
…giving up light bulbs for Lent is silly.

I think this is one of those cases of good message, bad execution.

people are WAY too selfish now adays. I just had a conversation with a lady in my office. She’s buying and SUV this weekend. 90% of the time she’s going to be communting to work…the rest of the time it’s trip to the mall. Her kids are grown, and her husband has his own car. But she wants the bigness. Now I’m not saying that she should get one of those death-traps also known as smart cars, but I think she’s someone who’s stuck in the belief that she should have exactly what she wants at all times, no matter the cost to the environment.

When you run into the people who believe that the world is there for their sole pleasure, it’s really hard.
So I have to ask…how does HER buying an SUV she likes and wants affect you in any way, shape, or form?🤷

If SHE is paying for it, paying for the insurance, and paying for the fuel it will require, how does this affect you?

“cost to the environment”…a nice catch phrase, but what does that mean? Global warming…or climate change…not man made.

I guess as long as she is not leaving her used tires in the ditch or pouring out her extra gasoline in the lakes, she can pretty much do as she wants.

Isn’t it NICE that we don’t have to buy only the things our neighbors want us to buy? We each get to make our own decisions and own choices!

Free will…God gives it to us, so why should we take it away from our neighbors?!?🤷

You can do that as a Lenten penance but then is it an Easter penance after Easter Sunday?

Lenten spirituality is about prayer, fasting and almsgiving. All fasts must eventually be broken. We aren’t supposed to fast during Easter. A fast should be to give up something that is good or at least neutral. Giving up something bad as part of an effort to change your lifestyle is a good thing but it isn’t a fast.

I already have an inkling as to what the theme might be that the CCCC will choose for next year’s Lenten season.

I just read that top loading washing machines will soon be, by law, out the door. They will stop making them they because they are not energy efficient!

Government intrusion is now affecting everything we do. Now how silly (and scary) is that?
