Judging from the way people here are responding maybe the Coalition has a point. If still Catholic I’d be checking myself to see if my refusal to go along is a pride issue, after all many on here do not mind Praying, Paying and Obeying when the suggestions and instructions are inline with a conservative agenda.

Now a suggestion comes out more inline with the Liberals and the attacks on the Bishops skyrocket. I thought unless the orders and suggestions are things that are mortal sins they were to be obeyed (for orders) or taken under advisement (for suggestions). Guess the Cafeteria still has a right wing…

I’ve not seen anyone yet post any opposition to the fact that we are called to be good stewards, only that the climate change people are confusing authentic aesthetic Lenten practices with environmentalism. This is an area of **prudential **judgment as the bishops themselves have said:
“We … call for a civil dialogue and **prudent **and constructive action to protect God’s precious gift of the earth’s atmosphere with a sense of genuine solidarity and justice for all God’s children.”
They also have made statements that favor belief in global warming, but since these are not matters of either faith or morals, we are not bound in conscience and niether do we have to change our light bulbs for Lent. Do we have an obligation to be good stewards? Absolutely…how we do it is our decision.

FYI, the U.S. bishops speaking as a bureaucratic or coordinating body, do not in and of themselves have a teaching mission, only each bishop within his own diocese, and further only comprise the teaching magisterium of the Church when in agreement with the world court of bishops and the pope. (per the Ratzinger Report, upheld by JP II.)

Umm no. She just likes the “feel” why can’t I know my friend better than you?
Probably because they see so much of themselves in this woman.
SUV’ do have a harsher impact on the enviroment than sedans. And the only status symbol these people think they get from owning one is only in their head.

What are we to do when a legal ban causes more harm to the envornment, then was being done previously? What, also, are we to do when people have health issues…like severe headaches as a result of a legal ban and people in general are put at health risk due to that ban?

We have a duty to protect the environment, but where do we draw the line? If we really want to be good stewards we would live off the grid and off of whatever plants and animals were in the area so we could really reduce that carbon footprint! What next? Are we going to be told that we won’t be good stewards until we all cart our groceries back and forth on bicycles or horse drawn carriages (all with carbon credits purchased to offset the creation of the bike and the feeding of the horse)…I absolutely believe we have a duty to care for our earth, but when people start saying that it is actually wrong to use certain bulbs and governments want to ban incandescent bulbs we are going overboard.

I have compact fluorescent bulbs, but I am not a big fan of them. I don’t think the old lightbulbs are necessarily going to ruin the world. The light is different in compact fluorescent bulbs and they don’t last as long as they all claim they do. I have had bulbs go out even though they swear they should last around 9 years. Plus, how great for the environment is it when it requires all kinds of special handling to clean up or dispose of? You KNOW that not everyone disposes of them properly, and with that knowledge it is safe to assume that a percentage of them are ending up in landfills or other places to possibly affect groundwater. Part of being good stewards is putting forth products into society that pose minimal harm whenever possible. The compact fluorescent bulbs are much more dangerous than an incandescent bulb. The incandescent bulbs are the minimal harm option when it comes to our landfills.

Unfortunately, the government does not always act in the best interest of the people or what the people want.

The mercury in CFLs (from what I can tell) does more harm to the environment and to people, then do the higher energy using incandescent.

So which is it? I am confused?
Is it a sin to use incandexcent bulbs because they use too much energy OR
is it a sin to use CFL bulbs because they have mercury OR
is it a sin to use either one and you have to use only candles?

Why would you think this issue is either sinful or not sinful? How did you make that inference?
Your confused. I made no such inference. The most ridiculous inference about this whole thread is the fact of how Light Bulbs in whatever description wattage use, color or size etc ever became a Lent Issue in the first place. Absolute Lunacy IMHO.

YOUR POINT IS ???
What are you confused about?
I’m NOT agreeing to the idea that damned light bulbs should be a Lent Issue.
What part of my thread inclusions is it that your misunderstanding?:confused::confused:
YOUR POINT IS?

The newer bulbs supposedly have less mercury but still it is a problem and I was told by a person who works in our state environment agency that over 80 percent end up in the dump which is not where they are suppose to go. People just don’t have the patience to hold onto these bulbs and dispose of them properly so I can’t see how this helps the environment.

That said I do have these bulbs in my home but when they break, it is real problem and I am not sure if the hazard they have posed won’t affect health.
