I agree there were no abuses.

But it’s been a while since we’ve had a really good liturgical abuse accusation thread. 🤔 Someone should start such a thread just for old times sake.

No… But I did watch The Natural. It had Robert Redford but no Barbra Streisand and no hit song.

Of course if the OP heard The Way We Were at Mass then there would a case for Liturgical Abuse.

What, you mean back in the 70s and 80s when we played Bridge over Troubled Water, You Light up my Life, You Needed Me, and Your Song, among others, at Mass, those were abuses, and not just for the way we sang them?

Those were ‘regular Masses’. Wedding masses, for communion, we had Manilow’s Could it Be Magic, Mandy, Weekend in New England, Christopher Cross’ Sailing, Carly Simon’s Jesse, Time in a Bottle (Jim Croce), Bread’s “If”. . . on the organ. . .
 
Oh that for sure but all the above I actually DID play for Masses as noted, organ and all. We did have some kids with guitars in 8th grade who DID do ‘Let it Be’ though.
 
I was worried about the Gloria being invalid since the text was set to the Christmas song (during Advent) and not the proper text and I might have made a thread on that if I knew about CAF.

On a side note I wonder if young people actually like guitars and if it’s some sort of stereotype.

Truly shocking! You are talking about leaving Christ’s Church and haven’t even had the decency to discuss it with your pastor.

It’s good that the children are at Mass and that your priest is encouraging them .

I’m 29, and I think I still count as a young person, and I don’t like guitars in music in Mass, nor do I like drums. Or that big hollow stick with the little beads it it…or the tambourine…

It’s not something I’ve suddenly decided, I just never have liked the kind of music that guitars and drums make at Mass.

Even as a young kid going to Catholic school, I was never comfortable singing that kind of stuff in Mass.
 
The guitars, tambourines, etc are all part of the 1960s-1970s, really. I know, I was there. In that sense, the music that many (not all, and not even the many all the time) hear in the churches today is as ‘dated’ and/or traditional to the majority of Catholic worshippers as the 4 hymn sandwich, especially the English/vernacular translations of the 1950s.

For some reason though, 40 year old hymns are fine in AD 2019, but were anathema in 1970!
 
No, no!! Not leaving! I were just thinking about maybe attending SSPX once every while or so. Anyway I recall SSPX are in full Communion with the rest of the Catholic Church either way isn´t it? I have for least heard that we may recieve the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Confession there as well.

@Scott84 I don´t think it would change anything… 😦

I´m a 16 year old girl and probably more interested in Faith than the average person my age. In my opinion, guitars doesn´t belong in any Mass besides at youth camp. I´m so traditional that I´d want Ad Orientem back as well. But as you might see - I consider myself quite traditional and conservative 🙂

SSPX’s status right now is irregular. They are not in full communion with the Holy See at present. Their dispute is with some of the doctrine of the Second Vatican Council. I would not recommend going to an SSPX run church simply because of their irregular status.

I am blessed to live very close to an oratory run by Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICKSP) in my city. They are the only Catholic Church in my diocese authorized to render the Extraordinary Form exclusively.

There are alternatives at present to SSPX, such as Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP), and Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICKSP) churches. Are there any FSSP or ICKSP run churches in your diocese?

Then perhaps you can explain to me why SSPX is not in full communion with the Holy See? Why did the Vatican ask SSPX to sign a doctrinal preamble which they balked at? Why are negotiations between them and the Vatican to come back into communion with the Holy See still ongoing?

Last I heard SSPX priests are not allowed to conduct any episcopal or priestly ministry in the Catholic Church.

There is a clear doctrinal dispute between the Holy See and SSPX right now. This dispute stems from some of the Vatican II documents which they state contradict previously established Church doctrine. (I do agree with their reasoning by the way)

For the record the ministry staff at the ordinary form parish I sometimes attend are on the record of saying SSPX is not Catholic, that their status is in dispute with the Holy See and if you attend one of their churches you are putting your soul in serious jeopardy.
