Chanting Monks of California

Its nice to see the monks getting a bit of publicity, but the music producer’s comments were silly. “This band rehearses 3-4 hours a day, sometimes 7 or 8! They have 3 gigs a day also, morning noon and night. It can’t get much better than that!”

The monks are part of St. Michael’s Abbey, which is Norbertine. It is located in Silverado, California. In addition to the albums, the monks also run a preparatory school.

I love chant and will sometimes put it on while I go around the house, cleaning. It lifts the soul to God!
 
I agree with you Dale M that calling the hours in which the monks chant gigs was quite silly indeed. I hope that the monks are able to get the funds they need soon for the rebuilding of the monastery which according to the geologists in the report is sliding off the mountain. :eek:

I might send a donation to them to help them in their building efforts.

hoo boy… I’m no expert when it comes to liturgy and all the variants in the Roman church. However, this is what their website says:

Before the sweeping changes in the liturgy made at Vatican II, the Norbertine Order had its own manner of celebrating the Office and Mass. Liturgists debate whether this was a Rite or merely a usage, but the fact remains that many elements of the Premonstratensian liturgy (especially surrounding the ceremonial of Holy Week) were radically different from the Roman Rite.

St. Michael’s Abbey has preserved many of these elements in its present liturgy, and regards these Norbertine elements as part of our rich heritage, meant to be fostered and passed from one generation to the next.

To some extent. I went today to the Holy Mass at St. michaels Abbey and it was heavenly. I’m eastern so I’m not 100% what the Latin/TLM mass is but if this was it, I loved it.
