“(The dog) licks all of our dinner plates and sleeps in my mom’s bed, and we’re the ones who put our faces into his face. So, it makes sense that he got (coronavirus),” said McLean’s son, Ben.

It is well known by now that dogs and cats and ferrets can catch this virus.

I knew that cats and ferrets could.

Dogs I thought couldn’t.

There were two cases of positive dogs very early on. I wonder if horses and meat animals can catch it as easily, imagine the devastation to the racing industry or the scramble in the meat industry if testing started showing such a pattern

In my area before Christmas, there was a warning to avoid puppies from pet shops because a puppy mill had an outbreak of a disease that affected dogs, but could spread to humans.

I forgot what it was called.

There is a corona virus dogs can get that they have been vaccinated against for some time now, not COVID 19 though. I would imagine an animal vaccine, going forward, will include this virus once testing is ramped up in the pet population.
Although the pattern seems to be pets catching it from people rather then the reverse.

The veterinary vaccine companies have never come up with an adequately acceptable vaccine for equine, feline and canine coronavirus. Now I suppose it’s possible with enough money thrown at the problem that the issues could be overcome. But for now: while I’m aware of at least one vaccine undergoing human trials, I remain skeptical that a working vaccine can be made available anytime soon.

One of the issues is that coronaviruses shift enough to make the vaccines ineffective so it may be that the human vaccine will have to be a yearly thing like the current flu shot. One in which we’ll be relying on epidemiologists to make their best guesses while we know they don’t always get it right.

How I really feel: oh no, man’s best friend too?
