They said I’d get it in two or three days. Going to Latin Mass in Pittsburgh next Sunday (a real treat!) and hope to have it by then!

The tradition of women wearing veils (mantillas) has always been a private and non-obligatory practice. It has never been a rubric of the Mass. The tradition came from the fact that men hid their secular “glory” from God by removing their hats at a time when men showed their societal status by the hat they wore. Women hid their “glory”, which was their hair, by wearing a veil. All of this was done out of humility in front of God who is present on the altar.

Today, the culture of men’s status with their hats, and women’s glory with her hair… really doesn’t apply. But the private practice of women wearing a veil is still considered a private devotion if that women so feels the spiritual need or desire to show an extra act of devotion or respect in front of God in the Mass. It is personal, not a rubric, and never has been a rubric. It is up to the woman herself. It can be a very beautiful act for God.

When it becomes something very outward just to exhibit to others, not to God… then it is worthless and like an empty clanging bell.:o
