Yeppers - I wear a Mantilla, black lace and it folds up nicely and fits in my purse when coming or going. I use it at Adoration as well. It comes out of my bag in the vestibule and pop! onto the head before entering Church. When I first started wearing one, I felt wonderful and putting it on, I’d pause to think about how I was about to enter God’s house, etc…that was nice too. Perhaps I should slow down a bit and think about recollecting myself a little more before entering the Church…couldn’t hurt.

Thanks for the weblinks to places to get them. The Catholic stores in my area, there are two, don’t carry them anymore. And yes, I’ve caught the “stink eye” more than once and even had a sister (the plain clothes variety) make a comment on my wearing one here. 😦

In the parish I attend I’ve only seen a handful of women wearing them, though the young girls all have their heads covered for First Communion. I wish more women did, but I’m not wearting it to please them or be in fashion etc…but to please God.

Peace,

Gail

Amen to that! I started wearing one some months ago and most people haven’t said anything except to compliment me on some of my nicer ones (I do like to coordinate-can’t help it 😉 ). Only 3-4 women have reacted badly but I just smile and wave.
Anything that reminds me to behave myself (and try to be a little bit more like Mary) is always a good thing because I need all the help I can get!

I think the chapel veil makes a particular statement. What would you think of someone wearing a nice hat, instead? Like, a pretty, fashionable hat with a modest flower or bit of feather on it? It wouldn’t be a “Traddie Badge” but just a pretty hat and would still cover the hair.

I started wearing only hats when I was first convicted about covering my head in church. Personally, I think nothing is wrong with hats and sometimes I still wear one (although my youngest daughter tries to take it off my head to wear herself 🙂 ).

I think that hats are very nice but not as transportable as veils.
Recently, it seems that hats have come back into fashion but
if you get a hat, then you need to get a dress to go with, then shoes and a handbag and before you know it you’re talking a lot of money!
I’ll have to wait til my ship come in.

I hate hats with a passion and will only wear one if the Holy Father says I must

That article is more opinion than anything else…If we were required to cover our heads my priest would be the first to tell us we had to

WOW!!

Is there a website that references or contains the canon law regarding this?
I’ve written about this subject extensively. Canon Law no more requires women to cover their hair in the presence of the Eucharist, however, that does not mean the custom itself has been abrogated. Rather, it just means the Church cannot “force” a woman to cover her hair anymore, nor can the Church give her a hard time if she chooses not to.

That being said, it is even more wrong to tell a women that she cannot (or should not) cover her hair if she wants to. The absence of the matter from canon law should, if anything, tell people to leave women alone about the matter, and let them be free to decide.

The custom is 100% Biblical (1st Corinthians 11) and 100% Catholic. It’s a time honored Catholic tradition that comes to us from apostolic times, and Catholic women should not be afraid to keep this custom if they so choose. Polls taken on the subject find that on average 75% of Catholics here in North America are in favor of the practice, with only about 16% opposing it. So women who veil their hair can take comfort in the knowledge that the overwhelming majority of Catholics support them on it, and that those who may oppose it are a small (albeit sometimes loud) minority.

You can read more about this topic here: catholicknight.blogspot.com/2008/05/overwhelming-support-for-chapel-veil.html

I only ask because it is the third website today that I have read that details that information. And it IS ‘mostly’ opinion, but the details about the omission are the only constant (and also the misquote).

So, being by inclination curious and having a need to see the basic documents, I would like to read the canon law for myself.

If I have learned anything in my very short involvement with the RCC, I have learned not all Fathers are perfect. Being men, perhaps they thought better of interfering in ‘women’s’ issues such as submission, since it is such a hot-button topic. Wouldn’t be the first time that that happened.

Thanks for the information, guys.

Catholicknight.com’ was one of the websites I read this morning.

I’m off to buy a veil. Or make one, dunno which yet. I remember how wonderful my prayers went when I was a little girl and would veil to pray. I think I’d like to bring that back into my life.

I have seen members of an ‘Evangelistic Healing Ministry Church’ wear Chapel Caps, and the older women wear veils…? have anyone else seen protestants doing this?

Ooo! Fun! Which one did you get?

Black, no scallops (Medium - (BR105M)

They said I’d get it in two or three days. Going to Latin Mass in Pittsburgh next Sunday (a real treat!) and hope to have it by then!
