slain in the spirit not sleeping there is a difference
the bible speaks of speaking in tongues and that’s what has happened i or the people around me weren’t babbling at-least to my knowledge

acts 2:4
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
hysterics to be gifts of the Holy Spirit
your putting words in my mouth

so i guess by this simple definition im not a charismatic

lol…

So let me get this straight: you ignore when I quote Scripture… but now suddenly you’re busting out Bible verses?

I give up. You win.

Just remember that with the entree you’ve chosen, you get to pick from a choice of two sides and the salad bar.

i must have missed it, cause i didn’t see where you quoted scripture i could be wrong and if i missed it im sorry

i just don’t see how you think im this crazy charismatic when the only evidence you have for this is me receiving gifts of the holy spirit and defending them.

slain in the spirit

gift of laughter

and tounges none of which are condemed by Catholics or any official church teaching.

im doing my best to life a faithful life and doing my best to strive for the narrow gate.

I think labeling could tear down our faith, i may have some charismatic views in me but at the base of my faith the base of my believe is Catholicism.

Don’t let Joe “cool” upset or devert you. Although I would not be considered part of the Chrismatic movement now I do some about it. 30 years ago I was part of the movement, it brought me very close to Christ and gave direction to my life in many ways.
I struggle to undestand speaking in tongues and I have come to believe that there are serveral explaintions, first being the work of the Spirit, but as I indicated before as a gift to spead the gospel. One gift I have seen is that of healing, not just spiritually but physically and not from histeria. “Cool” seems to be critical of what he doesn’t understand and certainly seems doesn’t want to get to know.
Your are right when you said we must be united to a strong Church. It is the very diversity of the Church that can give us strength if each part doesn’t kick the legs out from under the other. Chrismatics, Traditionalist, moderist, progressives, those in the middle of the road and others all are welcome at the table of Lord. There is plenty of room and no need to elbo some else out of the way.
Christ told us that the Kingdom of God would be like the branches of the tree of the mustard seed. Those branches are the homes to a wide variaty of diffeent and diverse birds. So it it with his Church, plenty of room for all to bring the Kingdom of God here and now.

Peace,
FAB

Please do not be upset, and I am sorry you have been subject to such lack of charity as a new member at CAF. While I am not that active in the Charismatic Renewal any more, I do attend some events, and every person I know who is involved, and this includes a number of priests I am acquainted with, are exceptional Catholics, faithful to the Church, loyal to the Magesterium, and work very hard in their parishes and for God. They are definitely not crazy, unless you call being devoted to Christ and willing to spread the the Gospel crazy.

Are there some who fake it, or go overboard? Yes, I will admit to that, but that is generally fairly easy to discern. But the Holy Spirit moves where He will and in this great Catholic Church of ours He has provided many different forms of prayer and types of spirituality for us to feast on. He knows the need of all of us, and only He is privy to know our inmost thoughts and emotions–no one else can truly judge us.

And if you are subject to name-calling, just remember that the person who is really diminished by name-calling is the person doing it.

thanks

and btw stuff like this won’t chase me away i need a good solid catholic message board and this seems like one [sign]praise god[/sign]

I am going to attend a retreat next weekend if God so wills.

It will be the first time for me, i have attended some evangelical meetings but never a catholic one, and i am a catholic :D, well since easter but i have been involved in the church for 5 years.

There will be a priest from India, his name is F. Rufus Pereirra, does anyone here know anything about him?

There’s a world of difference between 1.16 billion and 1.2 billion. In this case, 400 million people that don’t exist.

And this 10% number is completely arbitrary. I didn’t get a survey - did you? Was there a study? Then I’ll accept it. Who came up with this number?

It seems like that number came from this book - notice, however, the complete lack of attribution.

The same made-up number can be found on this page:
adherents.com/adh_branches.html

120 000 000 Shiite muslims in the world. WOW. What are the odds?

Let’s compare the deviations in these random guesses, shall we?
I will not get into a meaningless discussion with you.

I said i put 3 zeros to much so accept my mistake and dont act like a fool.

As you are behaving you are doing exactly the same as some atheists do towards the believers in a religious forum in my country.

Having said that, end of subject.
Over and out.

Actually, I changed my mind. There are eleventeen hundred charismatics, and a hundred million gadjillion bazillion fazillion banana-fanna-fo-fannillion Catholics.

The whole point was, Anjoh - there is no REAL number to justify that 1 in 10. It’s not even about your 3 too many zeroes as of my last post, but rather the 400 million people that differ your pulled-out-of-the-air number versus the Church’s number of Catholics worldwide and the fact that any attempt to enumerate worldwide charismatics is a fallacy because it’s not like the baptismal records have a check box, or like a serious survey was ever performed. In my diocese there’s ONE place where charismatics meet - they don’t even have their own parish, and they’re allowed mass once per month in a host parish.

Head south one diocese, and there’s a healthy handful - of course, this is in an area right in the middle of the Bible belt… of course, they’re still limited to prayer groups and so far as I can tell there’s no charismatic mass in that entire diocese.

These are huge diocese, and make for a fairly healthy sample. To say that it ever comes CLOSE to 1 in 10 in either, or both diocese… is a fantasy. So what we have is 2/195 diocese represented.

Between these two diocese, you have 42 counties represented.

First diocese - 110 parishes - one prayer group. Assuming all parish populations are equal, and that the prayer group is equal in size to a parish population… then what you have is 1/110, or 0.0909%

Next diocese - twice the size according to their website. I can change my estimation method here, because they STATE the number of people in each charismatic group.
46 groups. 671 people who attend. Now that’s a big number, right?. Let’s say your average parish has 150 families, average family size 2.5. That means the number of charismatics in THIS diocese is equal to two parishes… 2/220 = 1/110… or 0.0909%

I reiterate my point: you represent an EXTREME minority within the church.

…TEXT…
The purpose of the charismatic movement is not to form separate parishes, but to work inside already exisiting parishes.

There is no such thing as we and them, at least it shouldnt, if there is somewhere.
We are all catholics, regardless charismatic or not.

And again, we drift away from the point, which is this:

That 1 in 10 number is completely fabricated.

Actually I thought the whole point of this thread was for you to belittle Charismatic Catholics because of your ignorance about the renewal movement and to somehow make Charismatics feel they are inferior to you.

I got no reason to argue about numbers, that seems rather pathetic, so no need to indulge in such nonsense.

My ignorance? I’m still waiting on an answer to this post.

Please enlighten me as to how sleeping, or hysterics serve the needs of the community.

…

You people should have to put a disclaimer on your posts.

Warning: I am a charismatic. Whether you agree or disagree with me, please understand that my practices represent an extreme minority within the Church and in so doing, do not allow your perception of me to color your perception of normal Catholics.
“you people”, like we are some kind of infectious element.

I could not ethically do this, since I believe that the Church founded by Christ IS charismatic. I think this is “normal Catholicism”. The moving away from the Pentecostal character of the Church that is clearly evident in the NT is what has weakened the Church. Though I agree with you that living the Spirit Filled life as a Catholic is a minority experience, I do beleive it is “normal”. What is abnormal is the fear of the HS moving powerfully and spontaneously (as the wind blows) within the Church.

Yes!
As Charles Whitehead said:

When God moves in the power of the spirit, you usually get one of four responses from people.
  1. They mock it.
  2. They make fun of it.
  3. They rationalise it.
  4. They completely ignore it.
