Charismatic Movement and Speaking in Tongues

Another reason I would listen to a good priest is because of the next point…

Yes, the Catholic Church has approved the Catholic Charismatic renewal but with caution. Cautioned at Vatican II and cautioned by Pope Benedict XVI as pointed out in this article from EWTN:

https://www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/charismatic_renewal.htm
If the speaker in that video had been as even-handed in his remarks on Charismatics as then Cardinal Ratzinger had been, the video would have been much less problematic.

I prefer to trust what a good Catholic priest thinks God can or can’t do.
Yes I trust what a good Catholic monk , a priest of the Abbey of Ampleforth , said to me about the Catholic Charismatic Renewal .

I trust his prayer and the prayer of an elderly Benedictine monk plus the prayer of some of his friends , as they prayed over me before the altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for a fresh release of the Holy Spirit in my life .

the video would have been much less problematic.
I understand that the video was problematic for you. For me, with some past experience in the charismatic movement, I found it very helpful. Helpful to remember to be very, very discerning today.

Others who may possibly drift away from the Church too far, as warned by Pope Benedict XVI, may find it helpful also.

God bless.

Okay. I’ll grant that. But, in that Wikipedia article, it says:

“ It is influenced by some of the teachings of Protestantism and Pentecostalism

This is extremely problematic.
Certainly, we can exercise caution, but we shouldn’t have a knee-jerk rejection of anything that has “Protestant trappings” anymore than Protestants should reject out of hand things that have Catholic trappings. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from people who had various “Catholic” things (like making the sign of the cross, or hanging a crucifix) rejected by Protestant relatives for no other reason than they are “Catholic”.

The last several popes have all voiced support for the movement. That’s enough for me. It’s not my preferred form of spirituality, but I know there is more to Catholic spirituality than things I am personally comfortable with. I’ll defer to the pope’s judgment.

There is no doctrine through the centuries which says the Holy Spirit cannot give its gifts to people. It is always amusing to see people say “God cannot do this”.

When videos avoid telling the truth, they are not good videos. I am not going to read through the posts herein again, but I thought it was noted that it did not appear to be Fr Rippinger. Whoever it was clearly showed a very great lack of knowledge of what the Charismatic movement is about. Rather than speaking about something one does not know about, the better choice is to investigate the matter to see what the truth is.

That video showed a marked lack of knowledge. I am not accusing the priest of ill intent in any way. He may be a fantastic priest in some areas; he obviously is lacking in knowledge about the Movement. “Good Priest” is not what this thread is about.

And those who are seeking the truth about the Charismatic Movement would be extremely well advised to avoid this, as it is about a very minor part of the gifts of the Spirit, and does not acknowledge what the Church has had to say about the Movement. The priest may be fantastic as a priest, and I make no claim otherwise; but his knowledge of the Movement shows a lack of any real knowledge base.

So do you use Wikipedia to learn about doctrine?

I thought not.

The Charismatic Movement was influenced to look into the writings of St. Paul, because of the evidence of the action of the Holy Spirit on some Protestants. Who, like you, were baptized into Christ.

And your point is… what? the Protestants are heretics whom God has abandoned? I have seen this comment from Wikipedia or ones very similar concerning a number of things Protestants have said and in particular in regards to the Movement, with the implication that if a Protestant says it, it must be wrong “because they are wrong about everything”,

That is not thinking with the mind of the Church.

Well, when we’re looking at things objectively, Protestants are outside the Church. I wouldn’t accept a spirituality that comes from outside/is influenced by false doctrines. The Church has many rich spiritualities already.

We have a rich moral tradition. Which we borrowed from the Greeks.

And we have a rich legal tradition. Which we borrowed from the Romans.

We get all kinds of good things from outside of the Church. St Paul says “test everything, hold on to what is good.” St Augustine says we must “despoil the Egyptians” and claim good things that might even be from outside the Church.

Not taking a position either way with regards to the charismatic movement. Just something to think about.

but his knowledge of the Movement shows a lack of any real knowledge base.
In all charity, I am not really sure how we can know this since we do not know who the priest is and it was only a 20 minute video, most likely a homily because that is what most of the videos on Sensus Fidelium are, and he more than likely only had a limited amount of time to say what he had to say.

God bless.
