Jesus most certainly did give authority to forgive sins:

John 20
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Thank you. 👍 I spaced and forgot the scripture in my reply to this badly mislead soul. Since his church has no tradition, he likely doesn’t know that public confession of sins was in the jewish tradition:

Nehemiah 9:2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers.

And in the newly formed Chrstian church…

Acts 19:18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds.

How the evil one has mislead some of the faithful:

Matthew 24:24 “For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible”.

Mark 13:22 “For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible”.

Christ’s peace.

is there a chart or reference somewhere out there that breaks down the anti-Catholic attitudes of other religions–especially Protestant sects? I am loooking for something that identifies those who are antagonistic toward Catholicism…you know the ‘whore of babylon’ ‘pope is the antichrist’ thing?
I don’t think that there are many religions in the world that say “We hate Catholics”… But in every religion there are fanatics, including Christianity.

If by anticatholic, you mean not catholic…well, not everyone is going to have your same beliefs. That would make you anti-jew.

So what do you mean by anticatholic?

It would perhaps be helpful to know what one means when they call someone anti-catholic.

For example, I believe the papacy to be evil. I believe the office of the papacy to be anti-Christ, as in against Christ, as in set up as something between Christ, to take His place in the hearts and consciences of Christians.

However, at the same time, I believe the Roman Catholic church, inasmuch as it maintains the Sacraments, confesses the creed and teaches that the only way a man may get a gracious God is through the saving work of Jesus Christ obtained by way of faith, is really a Christian Church.

Am I an Anti-Catholic?

Wow, JPII and Pope Benedict against Christ? I think that would be a pretty hard sell, even for a lot of protestants!

JPII I didn’t much care for, but I like B16 well enough.

I’ve just printed and am reading the new encyclical…

Peter has the keys to heaven, yes of course he does. What does that actually mean to you. I never denied he did, I do deny that he has anything to do with any denomination as far as being the founder of it. What he and the other apostles did do was teach us by the inspiration of God, how to live.

Judus was replaced with Matthias by the remaining 11, not Barnabas.
You sound almost like a Jehovah’s Witness . Lord have mercy! How small and impotent is your god, if that’s true.
First, Its in the Bible so if its not true then none of us have any hope, But all in the Bible is inspired of God so if you dont accept the Word of God then you may want to rethink some things.
The Way to Heaven in narrow, the Way to Hell is Wide…

My God is all powerful and is also the same God that gave us the will to choose either Him or Hell. I believe that we must follow the Word as close as possible, those that live by what man has developed that was not taught in the Bible are in disobedience. So you believe that because someone calls themselve a catholic and have been baptized in the anti-biblical baptism of the trinitarians is heaven bound? The Bible clearly teaches the opposite. Their will be many in the midst of the true church that will claim Christ and outwardly live like the Bride but inside they are living like Hell.
It is the way that Christ Himself established. You know of a better way?
God did not establish a man that has raised himself above all others that is almost worshiped himself that has the ability to excommunicate others that disagree with his teachings. Never did an apostle forgive anyones sins in the Bible. Never did people get dead people to pray for them in the Bible. Never did Mary have such an important role in the life of a christian as it does to the catholic church. If you disagree give me some examples.
Do I know a better way? Yes Obedience to the Word not to the pope.
OK, so which “church” must we join, and vow allegiance to before we “see the light”? Christ taught the public in open spaces, and taught the devout Jews in the Temples and Synagogues. No one had to perform a secret handshake or vow allegiance before they could see the light. Christ is light to all.
LOL, funny well first I never said anything about secrecy or handshakes but you know that. You dont need to join any church or Vow allegiance to any church at least not a church that was created by man. The only Church one need join is the Church one is part of automatically when we are Saved and Baptized in the Holy Spirit. This requires obedience to the teaching of the Bible and not changes made by man. The True church of God is not some organization, it is where who we have chosen to serve, to obey, to live for, the Bride of Christ is not any just 1 denomination and all else are left out. The Bride is made up of Obedient servants of Christ that submit to God and His truth, not to a man that pretends to absove sins of others sins. Yes Christ is a light to all…That choose to accept, their is not light for those who do not. We have the opportunity for salvation, we can either choose it or ignore it. We are not save because we can say that we are a catholic or any other denomination. We are saved by our submission and obedience to God.

I must quit for now, But God Bless and thank you for not taking my beliefs as intentional insults that is not my goal, I really do want to understand why you believe what you do.

more later.

Hope this isnt to confusing, I had to many character so I had to split the post,
Where in hell did these ideas come from? The evil one? Since you already “know” so much about the church, are you really here to learn? Since ALL of your “facts” so far are untrue, someone has apparently lied to you about “catholicism” popping up in the 400s, about the Popes condemning anyone, about basically everything. And, what convenient lies! Catholicism “invented” right after the canon of scripture was settled at Nicea. How convenient! Even Luther gave credit to the Catholic church for scripture, and you should as well
Popes condemning - Is that not what excommunication is ?

Catholocism popping up in the 400’s - I never said that, I said, that is when the Actual first pope was given that position. Before that their were different provincial bishops but not a pope. Even Luther? Come on, Luther brought out so many discrepancies himself. Do you believe that indulgences are for the Glory of God or for the popes newest project? Most of What I am saying is from either History or from the Bible, some I have already stated that I could be wrong on and am hoping for some proof either way. I have no problem admitting when I am wrong, so please give me some biblical evidence for some of what I have said that you disagree with and let me know what you want evidence for to back up my claims and I will start gathering my info as well.
You believe that satan exists, right? Which church does he hate, and come against continually? The false churches? NO! They are actually helping him by leading the faithful away from the truth. He comes against the truth. He is even now trying to destroy the One Church from within by corrupting some of the faithful, and he is trying to destroy it from without, by lying to believers such as yourself
Yes I believe in satan and everything else the Bible teaches. Satan attacks anyone or anything that stands for truth. Was God backing the spanish inquisition, the selling of indulgences, baptizing contrary to the Word of God: no But Satan may have been. Yes he Does come against truth and He is very affective as you can see from the trinitarian baptism doctrine. Most that claim christianity do not truly serve God, they serve themselves. They dont truly want truth as the pharasees didnt want truth because it was painful to the flesh.

God Bless

Am I an Anti-Catholic?
YES. You don’t have to deny that Catholics are Christians to be an anti-Catholic. Only to hate Catholics. You do seem contradictory though. How can “a Christian Church” have an essential leadership which is “evil?”, "anti-Christ’ and “against Christ”?

JPII I didn’t much care for, but I like B16 well enough.

I’ve just printed and am reading the new encyclical…
Now I’ve heard everything. You think B16 is less convinced of the truth of the belief in the goodness of the “evil” papacy?

jnt, you have obviously swallowed (or are simply cutting and pasting from a hate-site) so many absurd and vicious lies about what Catholics believe and about the history of Christianity, that I suggest you simply go and study, for example by searches on this site, or if you aren’t willing to take a Catholic’s word for it, look up a secular encyclopedia, and find out what we really believe and what the history of Christianity is. Then come back if you have any genuine questions about either of these topics. God bless and good luck with your study.

For example, I believe the papacy to be evil. I believe the office of the papacy to be anti-Christ, as in against Christ, as in set up as something between Christ, to take His place in the hearts and consciences of Christians.
What you just said goes directly against Jesus Christ in Matthew 16. You’re SDA, right?

Wow, JPII and Pope Benedict against Christ? I think that would be a pretty hard sell, even for a lot of protestants!
The target always moves! Revelation speaks of one anti-Christ. There have been 265 Popes. Which one was/is the anti-Christ? Was it perhaps JPII, who helped defeat godless communism and re-established the church in the former Soviet bloc? Since satan cannot be divided against himself, it must have been one of the others. But, which one? (Jeopardy theme here…) Anger comes from God. Hate belongs to Satan.

Peter has the keys to heaven, yes of course he does. What does that actually mean to you. I never denied he did, I do deny that he has anything to do with any denomination as far as being the founder of it.
Peter didn’t found any “denomination” or “church” or any “bible and tract society”. Christ founded His church on Peter.
Judus was replaced with Matthias by the remaining 11, not Barnabas.
Well, EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE ME! (And the bible I worship, and which will save me, was right beside me, too!)
So you believe that because someone calls themselve a catholic and have been baptized in the anti-biblical baptism of the trinitarians is heaven bound? The Bible clearly teaches the opposite.
Oh. You mean like here? (Matthew 28:18-20) Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Dude, I’ll go with Christ here. Sorry about whatever bible you have.
God did not establish a man that has raised himself (?) above all others that is almost worshiped himself (?) that has the ability to excommunicate others that disagree with his teachings. Never did an apostle forgive anyones sins (?) in the Bible. Never did people get dead people to pray for them in the Bible (?). Never did Mary have such an important role in the life of a christian as it does to the catholic church. (?) If you disagree give me some examples.
I’ll die of old age before I can refute all of the Catholic misperceptions that you have been “taught” by someone.
thank you for not taking my beliefs as intentional insults
You sure fooled me there! Try this when having a dialog: “I believe you should be baptized in Christ alone. I do not believe that Christ’s church needs a leader. What do you believe, and why?” That way, we are not already condemned to hell, and can speak as peers.

You just might just have everything completely backwards. God does not change, so our faith has not changed since Genesis 1:1. It is the continuous story of God’s covenants with man since creation, including our adoption into God’s favored people through the blood Christ shed on the cross. Where did your beliefs come from, how long ago was your church begun, and by what authority did your founder teach? If you say the bible, it’s almost meaningless, because private interpretation of scripture has caused 30,000+ denominations - none of which agrees completely with the others. Is that unity in Christ?

You ask-we’ll answer, but it’s a lot better if we clear up one misperception at a time.

Christ’s peace be always with you.

Good idea, the first subject I ask about then is the trinitarian baptism.
Acts 2:37-38

Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do?
And Peter said to them, Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins: and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

This is the founder of your church stating that the trinitarian baptism is wrong.

Acts 8:14-17

Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had recieved the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,
who came down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
For He had not yet fallen upon any of them: they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

Acts 10:47-48

Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?
And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

This was an Order be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Act 19:3-5

And he said, Into what then were you baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism.
And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is in Jesus.
And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Here we see that their is only ONE correct way to baptize in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Romans 6:1-3

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase?
May it never be How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death.
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Mathew 28:19

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always even to the end of the age.

Here we have where most trinitarians I have talked to accept the baptism the trinity denominations teach. Ok first examine what He really is saying: “in the NAME (singular) of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” Jesus was speaking of ONE name of the One that fills the three offices of the Father,Son, and Holy Spirit.

If we are to believe the Bible is inspired and cannot contradict itself then there is only one answer: We have 5 inspired scriptures that tell us to be baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and one that tells us to baptize in the NAME of the ONE who fills the three offices of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

If the Word is really contradictory then what do we believe and not, it would render the whole Bible unreliable, which we know is impossible. God never makes mistakes, we are to be baptized in the Name of the Father (Jesus) the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit (Jesus). In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are not taught to be baptized into the titles or offices of the Lord Jesus Christ, but into His Name.

God Bless you,

Jason

Trinitarian Baptism

For a sacrament to be valid, three things have to be present: the correct form, the correct matter, and the correct intention. With baptism, the correct intention is to do what the Church does, the correct matter is water, and the correct form is the baptizing “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19).

Unfortunately, not all religious organizations use this form. In fact, Jehovah’s Witnesses sometimes use no formula at all in their baptisms, and an even larger group, the “Jesus Only” Pentecostals, baptize “in the name of Jesus.” As a result, the baptisms of these groups are invalid; thus, they are not Christian, but pseudo-Christian.

Both groups also reject the Trinity. Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that Jesus is not God, a heresy known as Arianism (after its fourth-century founder), and the “Jesus Only” Pentecostals claim that there is only a single person, Jesus, in the Godhead, a heresy known as Sabellianism (after its inventor in the third century; see the Catholic Answers tract, God in Three Persons).

(continued)

(continued)

“Jesus Only” Pentecostals note that Jesus told the apostles to baptize in “the name” (singular) of the Father, the Son, and the Spirit, but they make the mistake of assuming that name is Jesus. There may not be a single name that Jesus has in mind at all, just as when we say, “Stop! In the name of the law,” we do not have a personal name in mind. If he did have such a name in mind, it may have been something such as God or Yahweh or Lord.

“Jesus Only” Pentecostals also argue that the New Testament talks about people being baptized “in the name of Jesus,” but there are only four such passages (Acts 2:38, 8:16, 10:48, and 19:5). Further, these passages do not use the same designation in each place (some say “Lord Jesus,” other say “Jesus Christ”), indicating that they were not technical formulas used in the baptism but simply descriptions by Luke. These four descriptions are not to be considered as a substitute for or contradiction of the divine command of the Lord Jesus Christ to: “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19).

Rather, the phrase “baptized in the name of Jesus” is simply Luke’s way to distinguish Christian baptism from other baptisms of the period, such as John’s baptism (which Luke mentions in Acts 1:5, 22, 10:37, 11:16, 13:24, 18:25, 19:4), Jewish proselyte baptism, and the baptisms of pagan cults (such as Mithraism). It also indicates the person into whose Mystical Body baptism incorporates us (Rom. 6:3).

The early Church Fathers, of course, agreed. As the following quotes illustrate, Christians have from the beginning recognized that the correct form of baptism requires one to baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

The Didache

“After the foregoing instructions, baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, in living [running] water. If you have no living water, then baptize in other water, and if you are not able in cold, then in warm. If you have neither, pour water three times on the head, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Before baptism, let the one baptizing and the one to be baptized fast, as also any others who are able. Command the one who is to be baptized to fast beforehand for one or two days” (Didache 7:1 [A.D. 70]). Written while the apostle John was still alive!

A difficult question, no I do not believe so. One must separate Catholics as people and Catholism as a religion. Some of the major difference is that most Protestants read their bible daily and are well informed of is context unlike many of Catholics. What you might want to do is to look into what the Protestant religions believe and why and then you will be able to see more clearly why there are major differences between the two relgions.🙂

I think Catholics know what’s in the Bible, they just might not know chapter and verse as well as Protestants. I know for a fact that more Scripture is read and quoted in a Catholic Mass than you will hear in your typical Protestant service.

I also don’t think there are really “major” differences between the Catholic faith and Protestant faiths. The “major” beliefs of Catholics and Protestants are, for the most part, the same. Sometimes they use different terminology but it’s the same Jesus being worshiped. They are the same Christian religion, not different religions.

I was going to prepare a lengthy response. But, I must know where your beliefs come from. Nothing can be established here until we know:
  1. Is God Divine, or not?
  2. Is Christ Divine, or not?
  3. Is the Holy Spirit Divine, or not?
  4. Do you possibly worship three separate gods?
