All of this is true. I agree wholeheartedly.Such beautiful responses from the posters on this thread! I agree with them
I have had some experiences so far that make me agree that indeed, practicing chastity can lead to sadness. But in the end, such can only lead to lasting joy because what you are doing is in accord with God’s will and who you are: a child of God created in His image and likeness
Perhaps what also helped me not to focus too much on the desires and my scrupulosity (which exacerbated by tensions in dealing with those desires) was my innate tendency to keep busy and so decenter my focus from those desires. In time, I learned to deal with the desires in a wholesome manner and I became a much more productive person. Still dealing with the effects of the anguish and tension though. Quite a bit of a story though; feel free to PM if you need someone to talk to (Um, end of semester approaching though. Might not respond promptly)
Also, frequent the sacraments and Eucharistic adoration. They work wonders; I assure you![]()
Ok, where to start on the healing. This will take some effort on your part but it will work.I can accept that life in Christ is miserable, unrelenting sadness and pain “awaiting final glory” at the end of time… yeahyeahyeah… What bugs me is when people insist that I got to be “joyful” through it. I can’t have this Orwellian double-think going on where I convince myself of something that I know just isn’t true. I can’t lie to God anymore. The fact of the matter is, I’m not a happy person. I am indeed miserable and despaired, and that’s just the way it is.
I’m 29, I suffer from anxiety and sexual addiction and have no friends. I’m miserable and the church doesn’t encourage me to do otherwise, because “hey, it’s a cross, it’ll NEVER get better!!!”
Let’s just be honest for a minute and admit that there is nothing consoling or comforting or pleasuring in this life, long or short term. I’m sick and tired of people trying to make chastity out to be some joyous thing. It’s not. It’s a neverending ordeal were shackled with in this life, these desires are a DISEASE, just like all desire is. I go to confession three times a week… my life is empty and void and friendless, so I turn back to masturbation. I go BACK to confession, confess my sins, and then return back to my empty and friendless life full of unfulfilled desires and self-loathing… so I turn to masturbation once again. Then I go BACK to confession, confess my wrong-doings, and then return to my life full of unfulfilled desires all over again… etc etc. … every couple DAYS.
It seems all I do is sit in my room repressing my desires, and it’s just making me MISERABLE, and then when I fall, I feel hopeless on top of that.
I GO to confession, okay? I go every couple DAYS… it’s not working. My life shouldn’t be about going to confession… shouldn’t it be about more? Isn’t there a better use of my time? Couldn’t I be doing something with my life, or is this all God wants for me?
Don’t tell me I have to settle for this… I could do so much more with myself.
You shouldn’t, because that’s a bunch of bunko.I can accept that life in Christ is miserable, unrelenting sadness and pain “awaiting final glory” at the end of time… yeahyeahyeah…
This^^.I went back and looked at your post and some older post thinking I missed something. It seems to be in your spiritual life. You seem to be going at it as an intellectual exercise. It is not. You pray a lot of formulated prayers which in itself is good. You seem to expect to feel something , but don’t. Pause and try to pray from the heart and then from the formulas. Prayer needs to be an upwelling from the soul before it becomes intellectual. You must have felt that early on as you were drawn to the Church. If you could only recover a small measure of that first love that drew you in, things will change for you. I can’t tell you how other than to pray from within. All the intellectualizing of the church , prayer books, rosaries, and confessions or whatever you complete as prayer-needs, really needs that foundation of love for the Lord to leap from a spark to a flame. Ignite the fire and you will change and become the man the Lord wants you to be. You have my many prayers.
I’m going to address you man-to-man. I don’t mean to be insulting, and I don’t mean to anger you. You’re clearly annoyed, and I don’t mean to make that worse.Let’s just be honest for a minute and admit that there is nothing consoling or comforting or pleasuring in this life, long or short term. I’m sick and tired of people trying to make chastity out to be some joyous thing. It’s not. Ha I know all about this. I work late hours usually get home around 9:30 - 10:00 at night. Then I’ve got all that beautiful time between then and 3 or 4 in the morning to keep myself ‘busy’. Well at first it was pretty bad. But then I got onto some online friends. Some of them are up all hours like me. We chat. We play online games together. We vent to each other and solve each others problems.Thank you all for your targeted and blunt advice. I can deal with blunt advice. What I can’t stand is the “love Jesus more!” kind of advice… ultimately, agreeable, but practically useless. Sometimes it’s like asking “how do you bake a cake?” and getting “By baking it!” as an answer. “How do you live chastely with joy?” “By living chastely with joy of course!” … “How do you love Jesus more?” “By loving him more of course!” … etc. “How do you seek the face of Jesus and gaze upon the beauty of his face?” … “By seeking the ‘face’ of Jesus and gazing at that beautiful face of his… look at those perfectly chiseled cheekbones!” … etc.
I’m being sarcastic of course, but that’s often what it’s like from my end. I don’t get metaphors and poetry and whatnot… not when it comes to trying to find practical solutions to life… and in fact, all that stuff just frustrates me even more… so I appreciate the practical ideas given here.
I just went to confession on Wednesday. I went to Thanksgiving mass and took communion. Today I’ve already fallen back into mortal sin (once again)… which means I’m going to have to go back to confession tomorrow in order to receive Communion on Sunday… that’s how my life has been for a few years now… constantly calculating how I’m actually going to be able to receive communion week after week and often having to go without it because I just can’t make the scheduling work out. I swear, God is trying to clue me into the fact that I’m just not ready to live a Catholic life at this point, because I literally can’t actually live it, even at the most basic level… and I don’t want to just go through the motions like I’m sure so many just end up doing. I want to actually “do this”… you know? I don’t want to be a slacker.
I just don’t have enough love for myself to desire the good things God wants to give me… then if I do desire them at any point, I don’t feel like I’m capable of receiving them… and then if I do feel capable of being loved, I’m not sure I want what God wants for me anymore… and it just goes in cycles like that. People put down “feelings” a lot in the Church, and I can understand why… but at a certain point, you DO have to “desire” good for yourself… because if you can’t desire good for yourself, then it doesn’t matter what God’s offering… even eternity with Him… you won’t want it. That’s my sloth acting up. That’s a learned behavior I learned after years of suffering under a father who used to throw me down stairs and into walls and step on my feet and tell me I was “no good, rotten” and “stupid” and “worthless sack of —” every day of my young life.
so if anyone is actually dealing with a similar issue, you probably know how testy and frustrated that can make a person after a while… having to live that way. So I apologize if I come off kind of standoffish.
The fact of the matter is, in my line of work, I spend at least 8 hours a day working with the mentally challenged, many of which are blind, lower functioning, elderly, and suffer with a wide variety of health and psychological problems. This line of work has erratic hours… so I often CAN’T get to various outings like SA meetings (which are always offered in the evenings, from what I’ve seen)… nor can I even go to Confession at my parish… (my troubles with getting to confession are chronicled in other threads of mine)… at least, confession with a “regular” priest is hindered because of this.
So that basically leaves me coming home around midnight ever day with nothing to do with myself but literally “sit in my room” … (because what is there to DO at midnight?)… and that’s why I’m addicted to impurity with myself. Because I have the four walls of my room and nowhere to go for hours and hours every night… then after I inevitably fall, I end up having to spend my free time in confession at the “shrine” in my hometown… only because they offer confession in the mornings! (imagine that!) … But because pilgrims and visitors area always coming from all over, the lines for the one or two priests are always backed up… so I end up having to sit there for hours sometimes waiting for Confession every couple days… etc. etc.
I’m not whining about any of this though because ultimately, you gotta do what you gotta do.
It’s just very hard, and I don’t know what to do to change things up, unless I put myself out of employment…![]()
Again thats part of the problem with generational curses, you end up doing the same sins as your parents. if one of your parents was a SA or an alcholic exe… then you might end up doing the same things as they did. Its like cancer how it can go from parent to child, same with sins but with sins you can actually get rid of them by confessing those sins of your parents and forgiving them. Take an look at your family line and look at all the sins they did as much as you remember like your father, you said he was an abuser so that falls under murder, anger. Did your grandfather do the same to him as well? Does somebody also have a porn addiction that you know of, take an account and write all that stuff that you know off down, write down all the stuff he said and done to you, next time you see a priest then talk to him about all this stuff and the generational sins and he will help “hopefully” from there to break those sins. Your not held accountable for those sins but the influences that they do to you need to be broken so you can clear up that cancer from spreading down the line. but talk to the priest about it next time you see him. it really does seem like you have a generational problem cause no matter how much you seem to confess you get stuck in the hamster wheel doing the same thing over again.Thank you all for your targeted and blunt advice. OK… some practical advise - take it or leave it!… so I appreciate the practical ideas given here.
