I think she sounds like she may have a mental illness or a bit of senility. I probably would have tried to tell her it was only advertising and not really “magic”. But that if she had a product to try that was better, I would appreciate her telling me about it and I would buy it! The “born again” questions and the public praying would have probably had me getting into my car as fast as possible to get away from her!

People are really weird aren’t they SJ?

Did you ever see the thread on here about clerks being afraid of sales they ring up that come to $6.66 or change to that amount? I used to work with a lady that wasn’t all that religious but got weird whenever that number showed up.

I agree with the poster above that it’s just religious superstition and wouldn’t sweat it.

What would I have done? Hmmmm, :hmmm: I think I’d have whipped out one of my Catholic tracts and offered it to her. Probably the one called “Sound Bites on Salvation

She looked at me and asked me if Jesus would want me to buy a product that endorsed magic.
You’re kidding, right? Because we’re all laughing here. We’ve all had situations like that. I once had some lady - and why is is always women? - come up to us and say that facepainting was a gateway to demonic possession.

I’m so glad I’m Catholic, free from these prisons.

What should I have done?
Next time, tell her you are removing one satanic item from the store on every visit and are taking them back to your church to have the demons cast out properly before burning them in the holy fire of the Spirit, or some such. Could she be a saint and buy all their other satanic products to help you in this Godly enterprise? 🙂

No, really I’d quietly ask the store manager to call the police. They have some training to decide whether she needs help, whereas we don’t.

I would like to thank all of you for giving me a very entertaining several minutes.

On the subject of the thread, I would have gone the route of telling her to MHOB. If she persisted, then I would have probably ignored her. If she got insistent after that, then perhaps a detention for mental evaluation might be in order.

Always be kind; always be loving; always… That is of Jesus. There is always a way to do that…

She did not know what I believed in or not, yet offered her advice in a checkout line.
Magic Sizing is a type of starch for when you ever decide to iron clothes. I don’t do it unless I really have to by the way. Now, I have to do the dry cleaner thing. I don’t like to support dry cleaners unless I have to, because I care about our enviornment.
Maybe she thinks driving a Mercury Cougar really does mean you’re riding a wild cat.

Checking out in the express lane. 7 items. One item that caught the eye of a woman behind me was Magic Sizing. She looked at me and asked me if Jesus would want me to buy a product that endorsed magic.

I looked at her for a very very long time, and was unable to reply. The checker told her that the product was not at all connected to magic and looked at me with sympathy.
The lady went on to tell me that I should not purchase the item, and that she would go and get me a product that worked even better and would not offend Jesus.
I told her not to go out of her way like that, and if it would make her happy I would simply ask to have the item considered a change of heart and was willing to move on for her sake, not mine.
As I am packing the groceries in the trunk, she is right next to me. Asking me if I am born again.
I said, sorry I have a hard time hearing so I can’t talk now.
This was the worst thing I could have done. Because then she started to pray for me really loudly in the lot.
It was a real scene. Not wanting to hurt this old lady, I just pretended I was hard of hearing and smiled and waved at her. As soon as I could, I got out of there.
I could have been wrong to coddle her like that, but she seemed so fragile.
What should I have done?
I would’ve asked her if card tricks were the devil’s work.

A friend and I once met a guy who did simple card tricks, and often did them at church events for free. He said he had two old ladies tell him he was demon possessed for it. As my friend said, there’s a difference between magic (doing card tricks) and magic (incantations, summoning demons, etc.).

I wonder what this little old lady would have done if Strawberry Jam had also purchased a box of “Devils Food Cake Mix”… 😛

Or started singing the Lynyrd Skynyrd song “Devil in a Bottle”… 😃

“The Devil Went Down to Georgia”

Charlie Daniels Band

😛
Or “Devil with the Blue Dress On” by ZZ Top. Then they could have a lengthy debate about whether or not that song is saying the devil’s a transvestite.

Seeing as how most of the posts here are of humorous sort, I hope no one minds me adding some more.

Truthfully, I would actually find a situation like yours SJ to be quite an opportunity of fun. If I were to ever actually meet your old lady, I’d do this.

suddenly becomes aware of something

Oh I’m sorry, I gotta take this…

takes out cellphone

Yeah sis? Yeah I’m at the checkout line now, why you wanted something?

suddenly :ehh:

Wait, hang on? Rin wants what? Jewels? Girl I told you she shouldn’t have used all her magic gems taking out Berserker. Where am I gonna find jewels in a grocery store? And about Salem, I don’t care if he was once a warlock. He’s a cat now and cats use the litterbox, not the toilet! God…

Wait, there’s more? -_-;;

pretends to hear more

Ugh… no, tell your friend Weasley that they don’t sell dungbombs here. I’m in Walmart for pete’s sake, not Diagon Alley! Man, you guys got any normal requests?

pauses

Evangeline wants her tea while Marisa and Alice want cookies to go with it… ugh, don’t worry I already knew that. Look are you done? You’re wasting my time now. You know Master Balthazar’s gonna sick those mops and brooms on me again if I’m late for plasma bolt practice!

hears a bit

Finally, thank you!

puts down phone and turns to lady

You were saying? ._.

😃 laughing so hard, that my belly aches… Good one!

I can see how this would be kind of funny. My daughter calls deviled eggs angel eggs. I have talked with her pretty much about this but nothing convinces her that it means deviled(sepperated) well I suppose the devil did sperrate himself from God. Anyways I can see how the elderly is a bit maybe dementia, but still I agree with SJ that we need to respect her. the trouble I see can happen is she is trying to pull someone into her fear.I had a friend that had a car called a demon, I can’t remember what brand and she just scratched off the symbol on the car and drove it. So there you go change word to angel with black marker or paint over it. I still liked another brand anyways.

Another possible answer:

"Um…beg to differ, M’aam.

Ezekiel 30:39 clearly says that we can use such things."

Let her chew on that. If she tells you (correctly) that Ezekiel 30 only has 26 verses, then you compliment her on her knowledge of scripture, several times if necessary, “Wow, you really know your bible!”, and keep deflecting. Chances are in such a situation, though, she wouldn’t realize it until she got home and looked it up. 😃

If she said, no, Ezekiel 30:39 does not say that, you can let her know there is no such verse. “How can I trust your interpretation when you don’t even know how many verses are in Ezekiel 30???”

Either way, you could just choose to ignore her or have a little fun. 😉

I would have simply told that it is just starch for ironing my shirts and that BTW I use only holy water in my steam iron! :D:D:D
