Chef sees Virgin Mary in restaurant griddle

An outline of the Virgin Mary has been spotted on a food griddle at a restaurant on the California/Mexico border.

Hilda Maciel, a chef at the Las Palmas restaurant in the small border town of Calexico, discovered the image when cleaning the griddle, reports the Imperial Valley Press.

The restaurant’s general manager Brenda Martinez told Associated Press that, after local churchman Rev. Gerardo Fernandez confirmed the image was a true likeness of the Virgin, more than 100 people flocked to restaurant to view it.

Among the onlookers was a group of masked Mexican wrestlers in town for an exhibition.

The griddle has been retired from service in the kitchen and put on display in a storage room at the restaurant where visitors will be allowed to view it for free.

I personally don’t buy these so called “sightings” or whatever it is you want to call it. Why would the Blessed Virgin Mary appear in a restaurant’s griddle? I mean really! :rolleyes:

I generally take such things as coincidences rather than “miracles” and don’t really need our Lady appearing on my morning breakfast bagel to remind me to say the rosary.
I guess if she did it’s most likely for the sake of the cook who’s probably a fallen away catholic to get his attention. Frankly in this case it sounds like a publicity stunt to bolster business for the restaurant.

Either could be the case. The news reports I’ve heard and read say that it is an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who of course has deep significance for Mexicans, and the restaurant is on the US/Mexico border.
 
Now people are flocking to see the Holy Mother of God appearing, of all places,
on a burger Griddle.
What is wrong with so many of our Catholic people, that they fall for such
an OBSCENE and SACRILEGIOUS claim as this???
I remember here in Miami, about 20 or so years ago, an old Cuban man was sitting on a bus bench next to a shade tree that was dripping sap. The man claimed that he look up, saw the virgin Mary on a tree branch in the tree, got a drop of sap on his sand, rubbed his eye, and the sap somehow caused a cataract in his eye allegedly to go away.
Well, Miami’s world-famous gossipy Cuban Radio Stations began blabbing the matter all over town, and a million Catholic locals descended on the poor old tree (which was city property, by the way, making these Catholics’ actions VANDALISM), and they cut the entire tree into millions of little woodchips, right down to and including the roots, leaving a hideous hole in the ground. I converted to the Catholic Faith in 1999 and I believe in it and love it, but disgusting things like THIS both make me angry AND embarass me to death.

Whew . . . in skimming, I first read “girdle”.

A griddle is better than a girdle, I think.
 
Oddly enough,
so MANY of these Catholics in the Southwest United States
ALSO patronize Curanderas in addition to going to Mass,
in other words, they are also involved in the Occult, in stark violation
of the teaching of the Catholic Church.
This doesn’t speak well for the quality of catechesis available
to Hispanic Americans in the Southwestern United States.
Here in Miami, many Cuban Catholics are involved
in demonic contact through the practice of Santeria.
Not the majority, certainly not, but many of them to be sure.
What a dirty rotten shame.
 
Just curious, but what does the Church say about these things?
 
I dont know about the griddle…

But a friend of mine saw the one in Clearwater, FL… the image of Mary on a hospital window… and she said it was pretty remarkable.
 
Sad thing is this kinda stuff distracts people and the church from “actual” apparitions and distracts people from Divine Revelation which always seems to say exactly what the real apparitions say: repent,pray,fast, go to mass etc. The real question in discerning whether the church will label it miraculous etc is what fruit comes from it. It’s really hard to imagine much fruit coming out of this occurance except as i’ve said before it’ll really help the restaurant’s business. Has anybody been healed by eating at this restaurant or converted after having dinner there? My guess NO!

but seriously, it does kind of trivialize our faith in the eyes of onlookers…these little news blurbs…
 
The Church has always been cautious with apparitions,visions, and private revelations. Some of these things are private and these people need a good spritual director to discern them. We as Catholics do not need to believe these things, but we can believe them if they are approved by the Church. For instance Our Lady of Kibeho was approved in 2001 after 20 years of investigation.
