Chicago Archdiocese releases files on 36 abusive priests

The Archdiocese of Chicago on November 6 released internal files of 36 priests who church officials found had sexually abused children.

None of the priests who are part of the document release are still in active ministry, but the archdiocese had previously identified them as having “substantiated abuse allegations.”
 
Sorry to see a name I know on that list. Please don’t assume everyone on the list is a sexual predator. Pray for them all.
 
I find myself almost speechless about news like this. It seems like --for the sake of the Church – this problem should have been dealt with a long time ago, on a case-by-case basis.

When I attended Catholic grade school, I had to walk about 3/4 of a mile, each way to school. I was advised, on the first day of school in the first grade, to avoid strangers, such as somebody in a car offering me candy.

Sexual predation is not new and it was publicly known how to handle offenders many years ago. The civil laws were on the books. I suspect that the Church had laws on the books, too, relating to this subject, and others like dealing with alcoholic priests and priests who were involved in fornication, etc.

None of this was new – sadly.
