Chicago Archdiocese Thinks on Naming Monsignors

I wondered if this practice had been ended all together.

"(POSTED: 2/16/10) Cardinal Francis George is poised to revive an old – and somewhat controversial – tradition in the Archdiocese of Chicago: bestowing the honorary title of “monsignor” on certain priests.

In recent months, the cardinal relayed his intentions during a meeting of the Presbyteral Council – an advisory group of priests – and in a letter sent out to the clergy, according to several clerics.

In the letter, George indicated “he’s submitted some names for monsignor” to the Vatican, said the Rev. James Presta, rector and president of Chicago’s St. Joseph College Seminary.

Added the Rev. Jeremiah Boland, administrator of Holy Family Church on the Near West Side: “He did announce [in the letter] that he had begun the process . . . that he’d written Rome.”

The pope bestows the honors that carry the “monsignor” designation, but he often does so at the request of a local bishop. This apparently is the first time George has actively sought to “make” monsignors since becoming archbishop of Chicago in 1997."

The proper title is “Chaplain to the Papal Household”.

Tho’ the honorific Monsignor isn’t just for Chaplains to the Papal Household.

It’s also used in some diaspora communities for Archpriests, and in French for bishops.

Doesn’t mean a thing ~ the Pope will accept the recommendations, with good faith, not personally knowing the priest. This expalins why the priest who sexually molested me in the Sacristy (9 year old altar-boy) was a ‘Monsignor’ .
It was over 30 yeras before I returned to a Church - but now I’m certified CCD, RCIA Instructor, attend Bible study seven hrs. and Eucharistic Adoration two hrs. each week (soon to be an Extrordinary Minister of the Eucharist) Gloria in Excelsis Deo!!

It’s also used in some diaspora communities for Archpriests, and in French for bishops.

That’s inaccurate. Chaplain to the Papal Household was one of the ranks folded into the lowest grade of monsignor, Chaplain of his Holiness. There are three ranks of monsignor:

Chaplains of His Holiness
Honorary Prelate of His Holiness
Protonotory Apostolic

Also, Diocesan vicars general are monsignors by virtue of their offices (unless their are either bishops or already monsignors).

It doesn’t mean a thing if your bishop isn’t a very good one. Msgr should be an honor given for exceptional priestly service over a good number of years, not an honorific handed out to toadies.

If your bishop is like that of the Rockford IL diocese, it appears to mean quite a lot. I’ve come across two Monsignors in this diocese. The first is the former pastor of my parish (now retired) who was very good. The second is the pastor at my kids school parish who is utterly fantastic. Means a lot around here, but it sure does depend on yor bishop.

In Boston appointments of certain priests as monsignor was revived a few years ago after a long hiatus. No, not all vicars general are monsignors. Our own vicar general is a priest who is not a monsignor - a holy priest and a great administrator.
