Chicago Cardinal Francis George has written a letter telling the city’s 2.3 million Catholics that “we cannot — and will not — comply” with the Obama administration’s “unjust” birth control law.

In the letter, set to be read Sunday at all Catholic churches in Chicago, George slams President Barack Obama’s requirement for church-run hospitals and universities to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“People of faith cannot be made second-class citizens because of their religious beliefs… . Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights,” George says in the letter.
“We cannot — and will not — comply with this unjust law,” he writes, according to the Sun-Times.

Yep, we will be reading the letter from the pulpits this weekend, and posting something in bulletins, from what I understand from our Deacons. I have read the letter, they emailed it to me. Poor Cadinal George is in the trenches with the Governor alone, fighting him on numerous fronts as we speak, and now we have the Obama Mandate. Pray for our Bishops…they are truly on the front lines.

I heard a lot about this at last week’s sermon. (I happened to attend St. John Cantius.)

Upon watching Raymond Arroyo last night, he interviewed Newt Gingrich. (Raymond is going to be interviewing all the Republican Candidates in weeks to come) Interesting…at the end of the interview he asked him a few “personal” questions. The last one was…“Who is your favorite Saint, or the one you turn to in prayer and for support and help”…Gingrich: “St. Paul the Apostle” because he knew what it entailed to evangelize and preach the word of Christ in a totally pagan culture.

God Bless Cardinal Francis George!
Darkness is
first
** and** formost** full of** Pride** and it** eventually** becomes extremely arrogant. This being fueled by how easy it has been** able** to deceive others to** gain** power! This in turn, exposes it for all to see!
One could say that darkness* takes itself out!!
“Do not fear for I have overcome the world”
said the Lord!
And we (because of Him) can
overcome
* it too!!

I will be praying for Cardinal Francis
Thanks! They ALL need our prayers now…this is a critical time in America…being attacked on several different fronts. Cardinal George himself said just recently that this will be a critical year for our country. I do believe he hit the nail on the head.

I would submit that maybe a little under half of the Bishops are on the “front lines.” The other half plus a few (which make up a majority) of the Bishops plus 51% of Catholics voted for Obama in the last election. The joke is on us. How can you be on the front lines of the battle against the opposition when you supported him in the first place?

Right on! 👍 Where is the outrage at the unjust healthcare law. We should comply with that? If the Bishops did not support the healthcare law in the first place :eek:perhaps we wouldn’t be having this discussion at all.

OK, I’m confused.

Why is Cardinal George still in opposition now that Obama has given the Bishops the exemption in the health-care law that they were looking for?

Did he not get the latest news?

Aside from that, I understand that the Bishops have every reason not to trust Obama now, after assuring Archibishop Dolan that the exemption would be in place, only to back stab him by comming out with the mandate.

I also know he did it because he saw he was going to loose the Catholic vote, despite what Sebelious told him and had to take quick action out of political expediency.

But what happens after the election and he wins, will he then go back on his word once again, being he now has nothing to lose?

Here is the USCCB response to the latest revision of the mandate.
usccb.org/news/2012/12-026.cfm

It remains unacceptable. It still violates the First Amendment. It still mandates coverage which is morally objectionable. It still mandates insurance companies with moral objections to the coverage to pay for the coverage and provide it. It still mandates Catholic institutions who self-insure to provide the coverage; or to provide referrals for morally objectionable coverage, both of which are violations of freedom of conscience.

Here’s an idea: Just respect the First Amendment. Just don’t force anyone to violate their conscience.

Contraception should be a personal choice, not a government mandate.

Thanks for the link.

The other concern I have that the USCCB site doesn’t mention is, what if your just a secular insurance company owned by a person who finds this coverage immoral and doesn’t want to provide it?

There needs to be a conscience clause across the board in this health-care plan, or it does violate the Constitution.

We are eager to attend Mass tonight, and hope a similar message is read to us from our Bishop (Bishop Zubik). We need clear instruction on this matter so that we might conform our thoughts and actions to those of our leadership.

There is some confusion in my mind, stemming from contradictory statements and misinformation, and I need authoratative direction from the Church Hierarchy. We need unambiguous uniformity in our response to this rapidly evolving story. I hope that after Mass tonight I will have gained clarity.

The Bishops have not been given an exemption. Not really. Obama is forcing insurance companies to provide contraception and abortificants free of charge. Where do you think they’ll recoup those costs? From the insured. Second…many religious institutions are self-insured, ergo, the demand that the insurance provider give out free ABC is still making a religious group pay for it. Finally, this does nothing to protect private business owners who have a religious objection to paying for ABC and abortificants.

Yeah, the so-called compromise by Obama isn’t any good as I can see.

No. They’re united now. If you go to the USCCB and read the latest press release, they are unanimously against this mandate. Virtually all of them have put out statements against it that are on the internet and in the press, and being read in church.

There is no “left” and “right” now. We are all in this together. This is about our rights to believe as we wish. Both sides have everything at stake now, and are working together.

The statement of the bishops is very clear and very forceful.

Obama has given no exemption. The “revision” was no revision. You can see the bishops’ response to the “revision” on the USCCB website, under press releases. It came out 7-8PM last evening.

Yeah, I already saw the USCCB response and agree with them on the issue.

Check your diocesan webpage. Most of the bishops have both released their statements to the media, and placed them on diocesan webpages.
