No, I am not. This particular member that I responded to is in fact advocating for female ordination as a deacon. I am not referring to earlier discussion about the ancient office of deaconess. In fact, the whole purpose of this thread is the statements made by a bishop who is advocating for the ordination of women as deacons.

If you are going to accuse me of that, please make sure you know the context of my post.

And yet, you have been provided with multiple authoritative sources which demonstrate that this cannot happen, and you continue to advocate for it.

More than a few bishops throughout the time of the Church have held positions which were not in line with Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, or Magesterial teaching. This bishop is not the first, and I highly doubt he will be the last. In recent months, the Holy Father has removed a few of them from their positions and replaced them with orthodox bishops who will shepherd their flocks more faithfully. God is good.

Silly us, reading our Catechisms, all those Papal documents, and listening to what the Church teaches.
Again Jason you simply don’t understand. If a Bishop knows he will be so easily refuted by some know-it-all lay Catholic on these forums why even open his mouth?

Honestly some people have some kind of phobia about something that poses no harm at all.

You’re right. I am entirely unsure what would cause a bishop to advocate for something which is against Church teaching. I suggest you ask the bishop.

That’s the whole point Jason. If the question weren’t open for discussion then no one would bring it up. But plenty of people are bringing it up.

Someone else bringing it up. Yes this issue is indeed dead.

Deacons are part of the sacrament of Holy Orders. I don’t see how a woman can be ordained to the sacrament without then being allowed to be a priestess which is not possible. Yes it is a dead horse being beat.

You make a big deal that a Bishop brought this up. Bishops are not infallible. In the diocese I am in the former Bishop was going to attempt an ordination. The reason he didn’t is he didn’t want to create a mess for the bishop replacing him as he was retiring.
If the question weren’t open for discussion then no one would bring it up.
If this were true, then no one would ever bring up ordaining women. Just do a search and you will see how untrue it is.

"In 2009 a very significant paragraph was added to Canon 1009 of the Code of Canon Law. It states that bishops and priests “receive the mission and capacity to act in the person of Christ the Head; deacons, however, are empowered to serve the People of God in the ministries of the liturgy, the word and charity.” This wording had already appeared in the modified Catechism of the Catholic Church issued in English in 1997. In other words, the diaconate is a sacred order but with a difference from the episcopate or priesthood. Bishops and priests represent “Christ the Head,” but this characteristic is not included in the description of deacons in their service to the people of God. Iconic maleness is not a requirement for them."

This excerpt is from the original article I posted in the OP.

The same thing was brought up by this monsignor here.

So to the people who think cased closed read to be informed.

A Bishop brought up the question about female deacons not I. One would expect a Bishop to know more than a lay person don’t you think or he would look pretty stupid.
Forget the Bishop. Popes have spoken on the matter, and that is the final word.

However, I know enough about publishing to know that reports don’t always get stories right. Once again, it is possible for woman to hold certain positions in Church, and it could even involve laying of hands, but it can’t be Holy Orders.

Just a quick side note. It is spelled, “Magisterial”.

Drag out soapbox:

With all sincerety and in Charity to all; If it is SO important that women be allowed to be Deacons, and since V-II gave us this in Lumen Gentium:

“15. The Church recognizes that in many ways she is linked with those who, being baptized, are honored with the name of Christian, though they do not profess the faith in its entirety or do not preserve unity of communion with the successor of Peter. (14*) For there are many who honor Sacred Scripture, taking it as a norm of belief and a pattern of life, and who show a sincere zeal. They lovingly believe in God the Father Almighty and in Christ, the Son of God and Saviour. (15*) They are consecrated by baptism, in which they are united with Christ. They also recognize and accept other sacraments within their own Churches or ecclesiastical communities. Many of them rejoice in the episcopate, celebrate the Holy Eucharist and cultivate devotion toward the Virgin Mother of God.(16*) They also share with us in prayer and other spiritual benefits. Likewise we can say that in some real way they are joined with us in the Holy Spirit, for to them too He gives His gifts and graces whereby He is operative among them with His sanctifying power. Some indeed He has strengthened to the extent of the shedding of their blood. In all of Christ’s disciples the Spirit arouses the desire to be peacefully united, in the manner determined by Christ, as one flock under one shepherd, and He prompts them to pursue this end. (17*) Mother Church never ceases to pray, hope and work that this may come about. She exhorts her children to purification and renewal so that the sign of Christ may shine more brightly over the face of the earth.”

Maybe those who choose to demand full faculties for women might try the Anglicans, or Methodists, or Episcopal, or whatever Church in which they can get what THEY WANT! After all, it is all up to interpretation, right?

Put away soapbox.

Yes.

Also, is it not wrong for a Catholic to tell a fellow Catholic, “if you don’t like it, go to the protestants”?

My own dioceses, which is very liberal, the Bishop asked the pastors the begin recruiting boys to be altar servers, because as he was traveling throughout the dioceses, he saw only girls serving in many of the parishes.

I believe a female priesthood would have the same effect.

Jim

Although I do advocate for female deacons, I actually agree with you. We do need more men in the Church!

So, you think you are called to Holy Orders. I wonder what your thoughts are on other aspects of Church teaching, such as:

The Pope and the Magisterium:

Marriage:

Masturbation:

Exactly how many ares of Church teaching do you disagree with?

You think that masturbation is not a sin, that the Church is wrong on her teachings of marriage, and think that it would be better to replace the hierarchy of the Church with a council of laypersons, and lets not forget women’s ordination. Yet, despite all of this, you think you are called to be a Deacon?

Unreal.

Suddenly you are comparing the ancient office of deaconess to disobedience regaring masturbation, marriage, and women priests?

Unreal!

This thread is about the ordination of women to the office of Deacon, as it stands today in the Catholic Church. I have suggested multiple times, that if the Church wishes to bring back the office of deaconess as it stood in ancient times in the Roman tradition, I would be open to the possibility. I am not sure it is needed nor what exactly they would do, but I would be interested in hearing the mind of the Church on the matter.

However, that is not what this thread is about, and it is most certainly not in the context of what the member who started this thread, who I was responding, to is discussing. The OP believes that she is called to the sacrament of Holy Orders as a permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church. In doing so, she disagrees with Church teaching on the sacrament of Holy Orders. In addition in only approximately 100 posts on CAF, she has managed to express her open dissent from Church teaching on sexual sin, marriage, and the pope and magisterium.

If you are going to jump in, please make sure you know that context of the discussion.
