Chicago's Cardinal George Refuses Communion to Rainbow Sash Leader During Outreach Mass to Gays

He presumably was wearing his rainbow sash. The priest was being prudent. It’s like administering it to someone wearing a button saying “Keep Abortion Legal”.
A rainbow sash isn’t the same thing as a “Keep Abortion Legal” button. This Mass was celebrating a Catholic outreach group for gays and lesbians – why should a rainbow sash indicate a rejection of Church teachings and not an affiliation with this Catholic group?
And canon law prohibits open communion, and it should, because Protestants are not in sufficient communion to do so, denying the Real Presence. An Orthodox may do so, though, as they do believe in the Real Presence in the same way we as Catholics do.
This:
Respectfully, I was exceptionally catechized and I never claimed that the Church would sanction non-Catholics receiving the Blessed Sacrament. I merely stated that the act of doing so at my wedding gave those non-Catholics in attendance a wholly welcoming invitation to the Church. If Christ permitted Judas to partake, I cannot accept that He’d be quick to reject most.

1 Cor. 11:26-30 [RSV]

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.

I’m just going to say this and then I’ll duck for cover. At my wedding seventeen years ago, the priest who was our main celebrant offered communion to non-Catholics and Catholics alike. And people who were there *still *talk about it with admiration. For so many here, this is nothing but sacrilege. But the Church didn’t exist on Holy Thursday or Good Friday – at that time, His followers were just Christians. I can’t even fathom Christ refusing Himself to earnest Christians, no matter what my faith teaches. So paint me as a heretic () but the more who receive Christ, the better. He heals – surely Murray is in need of healing.

And regarding this specific story, how did the presiding priest know that Murray shouldn’t receive communion? How could he know that Murray hadn’t recently gone to confession? Or is rudeness in Mass a valid reason for denying communion?
I understand why you would want to extend the Eucharist to as many people as possible. But St Paul tells us that those who don’t discern the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist eat and drink judgment upon themselves. That includes about 99% of Protestants.

1 Cor 11:27-29 “So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.

In charity, I am intentionally assuming naivete.

From their website:

In wearing the Rainbow Sash we proclaim that :
  • we are Gay and Lesbian people (and our supporters) who embrace and celebrate our sexuality as a Sacred Gift.
In wearing it we call the churches :
  • to honour the experience and wisdom of Lesbian and Gay people.
  • to enter into dialogue with us.
  • to work with us for justice and understanding.
Together let us seek a new appreciation of human sexuality in all its diversity and beauty.

Also from their website:

We therefore call for an Ecumenical Council of the Church in which the whole People of God may seek a new understanding of human sexuality in all of its diversity and beauty. Let this Council involve people of every gender, sexual orientation, lifestyle, age, race and status.

So in other words, wearing the “Rainbow Sash” is a public proclamation of rejection of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition on the topic of sexuality. They are publicly proclaiming…rather loudly…the fact that they are heretics (look up the definition of “heresy” and what must be accepted with Divine and Catholic Faith in the Code of Canon Law if you believe that I’ve used the word incorrectly).

So, yeah, you’re right that it isn’t the same as a “keep abortion legal” button.

In a way, it’s worse (as I don’t know of an organized movement that is trying to get the Church to change Her teaching on abortion…)

Such as using the f-word… Please go over to some of the traditional Catholic blogs and please explain to me why that doesn’t offend you. Also, Voris’ language is quite offensive.

(Of course, they seem to be offended by everyone not them.)
Why has a news article about gay activists disrupting a mass turned into a rant about traditional Catholics?

I was just thinking the same thing. Though I don’t know if they have an actual affiliation with the Church or if they just use the name?
No more or less affiliated than the Rainbow Sash Movement, I should believe. Just a group of Catholics-in-name who think they are better authorities on morality than the Church and formed their own little flock of lemmings. 🙂

It always strikes me as strange than folks like Michael Voris are denied permission to use the word Catholic in something like the former RealCatholicTV, but something like Catholics for Choice doesn’t come under fire for doing so. I guess its diocese by diocese in terms of enforcement, but

How about Catholics for Choice?
Are they actually teaching that abortion is OK and calling for dogmatic changes?

Or are they invoking “privacy” and “conscience”?

My understanding was the latter…

Interpret as you wish – from Catholics for Choice’s web site:

“At CFC, we strive to be an expression of Catholicism as it is lived by ordinary people. We are part of the great majority of the faithful in the Catholic church who disagrees with the dictates of the Vatican on matters related to sex, marriage, family life and motherhood. We are part of the great majority who believes that Catholic teachings on conscience mean that every individual must follow his or her own conscience ― and respect others’ right to do the same. At Catholics for Choice, we believe that this is the world where the meaning of choice can truly be realized.”

“…if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.” - Matt. 18:17

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings” - 2 Tim. 4:3

"but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the man by whom the temptation comes!”* - Matt. 18:6-7*

So they are relying upon the threadbare “conscience” thingee. (Curious how they always forget about the rest of the phrase: “well-formed”)

From the rainbow sash web site:

“Trusting in the God who gifted us with our sexuality, we foresee our movement growing until the love we feel for our God and one another overwhelms the fear of those who oppose us.”

No one fears gays.
Exactly. The ‘fear and hatred’ line has gotten pretty old. And love…I didn’t see any love on display from them. If this movement were truly of God, we’d see more Christ-like behavior from them, behavior more like we saw from Gandhi and Operation Rescue.

Actually the US, Canadian and Mexican bishops have all stated that CFC is not a Catholic organization. The difference between Mr. Voris and CFC is that Voris is obedient to his bishop by not using catholic. The CFC has no regard for obidence to anyone but their poorly formed consciences.

Sounds pretty much what it is. They’re both in opposition to church teaching, but you’re right in the minor point that they’re not in the business of changing church doctrine, but that could be because they believe the Church has no authority to dictate this whatsoever and/or that the Church is too unflappable on the topic of abortion that it would consider changing its stance. What CfC generally does is focus on making abortion more widely available through legal and financial support.

My guess is that this difference in approaches on the issues of homosexuality and abortion is largely because the Church has significant influence in placing real and legal obstacles on abortion, hence CfC tries to counter that by supporting pro-abortion policies and politicians. On the other hand, homosexuality is so well-legalised and widely permissible that the only threat the Church could conceivably pose is their moral objection, which is why RSM has been picketing and protesting the Church directly. That being said, I believe the Rainbow Sash Movement did push for DOMA to be repealed.

Sad times for orthodox Catholics, anyway.

I know the Church of LDS has actually sued groups that use the name “Mormon” but are unaffiliated or considered umbrellas for apostates. I assume the Church could do the same, but yet it doesn’t. ?

Agreed – although “well-formed” usually seems to be code for “read and discern all you like, but if you still end up questioning at the end of that exercise, you’re damned.” I can’t believe the Church’s teachings on conscience were meant to end up there either.

It might unintentionally create an ecumenical issue though, especially with the PNCC and Orthodox Churches (they do formally call themselves Catholic too by the way - just not in communion with us).
