Chicaogo area -- Cicadas are here!

Not yet. So far, the windshield is still clean and the outdoors quiet, media hype aside.
 
:eek: Read about this in the paper today.We have cicadas here in Texas and man,those things get awfully noisy.
 
I live near Chicago and I’m scared! I don’t like big crunchy bugs. But I do like their symphony.

Maybe that’s why all the bees have disappeared–they’re scared of the cicadas.

Cicadas cannot be over-hyped in heavily emerged areas. I was in the sotuh Chicago suburbans during one of the previous cycles and I could not walk to the car without them flying into me. Not all areas will see the same numbers.
 
Still haven’t seen ONE. Today is supposed to be the day. We shall see!

Yeah, I have not seen any yet either. Elmhurst has them, and so do several southern suburbs. Cicadas emerge at night, so the earliest we can see them is tommorrow. However, the soil temps have to reach 64-65 degrees before they emerge, not sure if the general Chicago area has quite yet reached emergenc soil temps.

They will be here in huge quantities soon enough. 🙂
 
Is it only in Chicago that they will be emerging. I think last year, we had some as well in NJ.
 
I’m actually quite excited! As long as they don’t come near me - I’m excited to hear them! I love the cicada song - it reminds me of when I was little.

There are many different broods. This brood (XIII) is set mainly in northern Illinois, northwest portions of Indiana, southern portions of Wisconsin and a slight part of Michigan. It is my understanding that this brood is the largest in the world.

I am excited too! 🙂

God has some amazing natural tricks he has built in, and watching his natural order pop-up every 17 years is just amazing to me. The cicadas are completely harmless to people, various wildlife will enjoy the abundant food source, the soil will be improved, etc…

Very cool stuff imo.
 
I am in Central IL and we haven’t seen them yet this year. I am not looking forward to the icky mushed bugs on the windshield but I love to hear them!!!
 
I have not seen one yet. I am waiting.

I have been told that if the ground was recently turned over there will be no cicadas in that ground. I live next to a forest preserve/ pond/lake type of place - I think we should get some.

I think some of the different types are on different cycles. The Chicagoland ones are on a 17 year cycle.

Yes, it is a 17 year cycle known as Brood XIII and will release billions of Cicadas in the general area. Many suburbs have already see the start of the emergence, it mihgt just take a couple extra days for the rest of northern Illinois to have its soil reach 64 degrees of more. They won’t emerge until the soil is at least 64 degrees. It is warm now, so that should happen fairly soon.
 
Ya’all cursed me… last night one flew in my bedroom window and landed on me…argggghhhhh!!!
