I was recently received into the Church. My husband was not opposed, and may join himself at some point, although he isn’t ready now. We have a two-year-old who is not baptised. I wish for him to be baptised as soon as possible, but the problem is that we have no reasonable candidate to act as a godparent. Husband has an aunt who is a practicing Catholic and she is our first choice, but she lives a long plane ride away, and we simply cannot afford to fly her down her and put her up, plus there are the issues of her having to miss work and all that. We may be able to work something out later in the year, but until then, what are our options? Can I baptise my son myself, sort of conditionally, until we can get this godparent thing worked out? I feel like every day that goes by that he is unbaptised, I am letting him down.

Go to your priest and explain the situation. I believe the Aunt can be the godmother, but have a proxy stand in for her at the ceremnoy. If not, maybr the priest can suggest someone.

The important thing is to baptize youe child ASAP.

God Bless, and Welcome Home!

Your Aunt could be there via proxy (your Priest will assist with this).

Another option, you could ask the person who was YOUR sponsor to be your child’s godparent (that happened to me this year and we were just THRILLED).

The Aunt can be his Godparent, via proxy as has been mentioned.

There is no such thing as “sort of conditionally” baptizing your child. Do not baptize him yourself, except in danger of death.

Talk to your priest, who will schedule the baptism and take care of all of the details. I’m sure he’s dealt with a proxy situation before.

You can have someone stand in as a Proxy for your Aunt. Speak with your pastor.
