I’m just curious, is there any UPDATE to this story?

The story date is a couple weeks old. Certainly something new must have been published about it?

Has the mainstream media picked up on this? Has the Olympic committee responded in any way?

🤷

Ok, I can see we are both playing edit tag.

Before I edit my post again, let me say I think we both are agreeing on the same things. It was just a misunderstanding on my part, thinking that you were giving the Communist gov’t a pass because it is different from the 70’s.

No Worries then friend.

Problem solved. 🙂
My fault. Its an excitable subject for me.

Which is another indication that the story may be more hype than substance.

trentonzero,

Thanks for the perspective. But sometimes I wonder if we Americans aren’t a bit tunnel-visioned. Personally, I worry a LOT more about China’s military buildup being used against oil-rich neighbors more than it being used against us directly. China’s oil consumption is skyrocketing and they’d be fools NOT to be concerned about a secure oil supply.

I think they are both NOT fools and not terribly respectful of the rights of others either. This makes me more concerned about local oil producing regions such as suspected untapped finds in the South China Sea and even potential oil rich sites in Russian Siberia!

I think if it gets used, it’ll get used in that direction, yeah.

China may want to avoid a direct confrontation with the West anyways, since both China and the West are nuclear armed, but China doesn’t have nearly the arsenal or the missile technology to think it would get the upper hand in such a fight. (Just my thoughts…by no means an expert in that sort of thing.)

Itd be ok to buy from china right? or live there
The most direct beneficiary of your purchase of Chinese goods is a Chinese worker.

The foreign owned factories are really the best factory jobs in China. And the best jobs period are the ones working for foreign companies, period. That’s hard to believe, and I didn’t believe it until I came here and was told that by young Chinese people.

The Western press talks about the evil multinationals taking advantage of everyone…but, at least here, you talk to young people here, and ask them “What do you want?” They say “A job in a multinational company!”

The Western factories are sweatshops. The Chinese factories are death traps.

Due to trade, wages have sky rocketed in the last ten years.

Can a person boycott Chinese goods in good conscience?

Yeah, possibly, if they feel they might actually achieve something (for example, a threatened boycott forced Nike to employ only people above 16 in its asian factories). However, if the only likely result is the factory closing down and moving some place else, then all you have done is moved some Chinese familes from the urban poor to the rural poor (read: from poor the way Westerners think of poor to poor like few Westerners can even imagine).
